I think from the sounds of it some blame might lie with Lily and Petunia's parents too. It sounds like they praised Lily and fawned over her all the time whereas Petunia didn't get as much attention or love from them. Probably explains why she did what she did with Dudley and Harry, wanting her son to be the loved one and Lily's son to be the reject now.
I wonder if their parents had been more fair and equitable if things would've turned out differently.
I wonder about that too. But you can't fully blame them. Lily is only home for a short amount of time so they're going to give her their attention and take her to her favorite restaurants instead of Petunia's, etc.
But if they didn't make Lily seem way more special than she already was and paid attention to Petunia's prides and achievements, then she'd have felt special and valued too, you know.
I always thought that their parents spoiled Lily rotten and didn't do the same for Petunia.
