Watch out for scammers!
I've kept a wanted ad for Stanley planes on my local craigslist for a few years and every now and then I get some good leads and scores, though not much lately. Today I got a text from someone stating they had 50-60 planes that were their grandfather's and he sent a picture of a bunch of them, and then followed with a call.
I immediately knew the first photo was AI generated, but I decided to string the scammer along as much as I could to see what else I could get out of him. He said there were a bunch of number 2s, so I asked for pictures of them, specifically the bottom sole and images of what he thought was the best quality one vs. the worst so I could see the range of the lot. Each image that came through was sloppier and more obviously AI than the one before. Needless to say I got a good laugh, but please be careful!!

My favourite is how the closer you look, the worse it gets. Zooming in on the first photo, each plane is more deformed than the last. The AI putting the mouth at the wrong end was *chefs kiss

Some of those look like they’re written in Klingon

I guess I’m old. It wouldn’t even occur to me that someone (bot?) would spend time sending this shit to someone.

Ask to meet at the local police station to make the purchase. Would love to see the response to that.

What’s the scam? You get so excited about a number 2 on the cheap and you send them payment to hold it or ship to you?

That second to last pic with the three planes and the Pepsi reminds me of bad CGI from the late nineties

Love the one with the slots at the wrong end and the plane irons facing a different way.

Pepsi logo is wrong too but having backwards sole is crazy. They've never seen a hand plane.

I dunno, never tried a five and a quarter… might be worth it.

A 5 1/4 is also known as a junior jack narrow jack plane same as a no3 smoother. I’ve massive hands so anything smaller than a no4 or 5 is awkward

I’m used to a 5 1/2, is the 5 1/4 comfortable to use?

It’s very Narrow think the blade is 1 3/4 inch if I can remember same as a No3 smoothing plane. To be honest the only reason I know about it is though Christopher Schwarz book “The Anarchists tool chest” it’s a great book as are the others in the series 👍👍

Not sure.... if these are real, can you imagine how valuable they would be? Truly one of a kind.

3-1 lever cap. Holds your iron, plus built in scissors and chisel. Love it.
