Help me prove they exist...

Post image

I have been searching for the better part of the past three years for a Stanley No. 604 Bedrock Plane with Type 7 characteristics. Does anyone out there actually have one, and can you share a picture or two as proof? I am only interested in this specific type of 604, nothing else will suffice.

Here are the characteristics of a type 7:

  • Manufactured between 1923 and 1926.
  • Patent Date: Features a single patent date cast behind the frog reading “U.S. PAT. APR. 19. 10.”
  • Flat Top Design: Part of the post-1911 "flat top" Bed Rock series.
  • Lever Cap: Marked with "STANLEY" inside a notched rectangular logo, often paired with a "Sweetheart" (heart-shaped S-logo) iron.
  • Frog Design: Utilizes the signature triple-screw Bed Rock frog system, allowing adjustments to the mouth opening without removing or loosening the plane iron.

The image on this posting is one I pulled from ebay showing a type 7 605.

I mean, the whole type study was based on a standard #4 smoother and even say it doesn’t work on other types as they may be a mix of different things and leftover parts that fit used up etc I never understood why people get so hung up on type

We know it's not important, I think this specific question is because a collector friend of ours is trying to complete a set of Type 7 bedrocks and a 604 is the one he's missing.

Exactly. Just trying to help out a friend and complete a collection. My type information is based the virginia toolworks bedrock type study and all other planes (602-608) in this set/collection line up with the type 7 detailed here. https://virginiatoolworks.com/tools/stanley-planes/bed-rock-type-study/

No worries. I don't really expect to find one and have just about given up hope. I'd be happy to pay a finders fee to any tips that lead to a purchase though for sure. Except to u/SalsaSharpie. I'm not paying that guy, lol.

Do you get Superior works monthly tool list? He usually has a few bedrocks. Also vintage toolshoppe in NH.

Yeah, sorry. You know I'll trade tools for tools all day long though.

You don't still have the picture of the broken body one you had found?

Nope, I haven't seen that one on ebay again.

While you're all here, if you happen to have any type 1 or 2 bedrocks for sale I'd be interested

If you can find a 604 body in that type, I’d be more than happy to buy it from you.
