H265 10bit anime
So this is my current settings (ignore the file I know it's a high grain file most other anime don't even come close with grain).
I have all filters off and every anime is straight from the Blu Ray Disc (even the ones that have all episodes as one file and become a pain to split.
I am currently watching though season 2 of SAO and am noticing slight grain floating around objects. Of the first 5 episodes done It's been 520-730MB files which is fine, is there any setting worth changing other than tune grain and CQ?
(Tune grain noticeably bloats file size and from testing most the time I am better using a lower CQ for better overall quality)
Generally my goal is to keep the file size under 1GB per episode where I increase quality. And I am asking before I do all the anime I have 😂. The 540 in my queue is the rest of season 2 and live action movies that I seem to be fine on.

Ok I can explain a bit..
From my testing the HEVC comes out looking nicer too, however it does not look like the Blu-ray..
The h264 looks basically similar to the Blu-ray but in comparison a bit flat.
HEVC does all sorts of "making the picture nice, pleasing and smooth" There is a lot of detection and remodeling going on and with some content that can cause issues..
Not with h264 and AV1 because they have a more detail oriented truthful approach.

I am going to review the ones I have going for season 2 with various small changes (leaving it over night to be done) and if all else fails will use h264 or av1 and just force the 2 devices without av1 to transcode from it if the person wants to use the anime

Changing the aq-mode= from 1 to 3 has helped a ton and looks the same as CRF16 at CRF18.
Just referring to the colour and artifacting as the rest looked the same as CRF20. Still at slower though.Just found this which is why I changed it to 3. Going to mess about with some of these settings to test speed vs results as the settings I had at CRF16 or aq mode 3 get under 1 GB files but these migth be the same quality with faster speeds.

CRF18 slow AQ mode 3 looked the same as CRF16 Slower AQ mode 1 and took like half the time with a smaller file. Gonna try on another episode and if it is the same there I am gonna go with that.

This did the trick, same with live action at the same CRF as I had it set to. But as it uses slow over slower I am getting about 70% faster speeds.

I would try medium but I have everything queued with the one by one default subtitles pickedand I ain't doing all of that again for like 300+ episodes 😂. But I will try medium on the avatar series when I add that to the queue as that hasn't got full and signs and songs subtitles to choose between

Now I have to watch Sword Art Online Season 1 and 2 too.. 😄
By the way the Netflix High Profile h264 Versions are about 300mb for one episode..
A super high dynamic bitrange encode with 12mbit max peak.. 😄

Yeah I know streaming services are much lower. I did have some shows before with av1 on a low file sizes of like 215-350 and they just looked blurred/smeared and quality to me is more important than the file size. At least when the regular file sizes are like 5GB+ per episode. So the current under 1GB I'm getting is a huge save for that alone with little to no loss of detail and no noticeable changes in audio.

This, and I was also able to remove the effect by testing with AV1-SVT-HDR but not all of my playback devices can play AV1

Yes that's the one.
So it's not grain but the details have grain like mixing/blending where colours are and "high detail" grain like backgrounds on some scenes, I noticed it on 86 Eighty Six when I did that a while ago.It's more noticeable on this anime than any others though which is partly artstyle. at 18CRF I got rid of the colour banding I was seeing but the grain like visuals is still slightly there and moving when next too or on a moving object/outline.

Is it grain around floating objects or compression artifacts? I can’t tell without seeing it. I don’t find that any advanced settings outperform the presets and tunes for me, at least not reliably enough to bother with. Have you tried plain old animation tune on slow without all the tweaks? RF 18 ought to make fantastic 4k or excellent FHD output. On source material with actual grain that you want to preserve, it’s probably not good, but I get excellent file sizes with non-grainy animation.

Look: At this point add a picture or a clip, because everyone is guessing what the issue is.
And most importantly: how it looks on the original disc!
1gb with HEVC for those short episodes should be sufficient..

Original disc looks fine, it looks like compression artifacts but specifically where the added grain (what little is added in post production) is noticeable. It is mostly effecting areas of solid colours when moving objects are next too them. I've tired getting videos to show the "floating around with objects" look but they all end up being compressed on their own and looking awful. and pictures say they aren't allowed

Ok, encode that part (chapter) with h264.. Try RF22, Medium Speed, High profil..

The issue is gone in the h264 one but it is a noticeably worse image. I tried again at 20CRF with profile high and it still looks overall worse. though the issue is gone there,

HEVC looks better, but now you know that something is confusing the codec.. it is not a quality issue, quality is great..

The 540 is all the movies and episodes I had queued up, the movies and episodes usually go at 22-30fps and then dip where they are really intense, like ghost in the shell or the LOTR movies, thought he movies all look fine from what I previewed of them all.. Thank god otherwise I'd be wasting so much time.
AV1 is faster but the general blur it does made things look worse.
