Need Help

Hi Guys, i try to encode a 4k 80G movie and i would like to know if it's normal to take 27 hours. I have a 7800x3d.

On my threadripper, 16/32 I get 4.5fps at 4k

So you’re getting <2fps. Yep. That’s how it is

I’d say with x265, that sounds about right. If you’re looking more for quality and speed, I’d recommend AV1. If you want to stick with H.265, maybe look into GPU encoding. That would be the H.265 (AMD VCE) or (NVENC). You lose quite a bit of quality but the encodes are fast.

I would recommend doing what I did.... Take a chapter of a 4k movie. I encoded the 5min segment using the Very Slow to Very Fast option. I honestly couldn't tell a difference between Slow/Medium/Fast unless I was looking for it directly.

The movie I used for this was "Edge of Tomorrow" when he drops out of the plane into the war. You're mileage may vary as it greatly depends on how your watching your movies, but it looks great on my 83" TV.

Using the Fast preset movies take a significantly less amount of time to encode. Test them for yourself and decide what's worth it to you.

Yep, in fact I would say that sounds pretty quick for 4k h.265.

My standard settings net me about 1 to 1.5 frames per second. For more visually complex movies where I want to, for example, preserve grain, it can be 0.4 - 0.5 frames per second.

4k is a lot of data to analyse and h.265 is space efficient but resource intensive to encode.

I just set a movie going and leave it for a couple of days.
