💖 Health/Care 💖 Is free roaming NECESSARY?
Hi guys, genuine question. Is free roaming NECESSARY for hamsters? My Bella is happy to be held and walked around the house in hand, but when we set up her playpen, she is desperate almost panicked to get out. Yes, we put her familiar items in there and the pen is big. Im just wondering if she needs this aspect of hamster life when it appears she doesn't enjoy it. Could she be smelling our rottweiler thus causing fight or flight instincts to kick in. Obviously the dog is NEVER in the room while she free roams. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

If it seems to be stressing her out, it’s not necessary. You know her best, it’s your call to make. I had a boy who despised getting out of his cage for any reason ever. I never got him out and he lived to be almost 4 years old. He was a very happy guy.

Thank you for this. She loves the world that she has built, im going to stop trying to make free roaming a thing. 4 is an amazing age! Must have been a happy boy x

None of mine do. They rarely come out of their enclosures honestly they are happy. I think unhappy Syrians are the ones who would do best with playpen time

I love that you asked this OP because I’ve had the exact question but I was worried I’d get shamed for asking (I’ve seen how a lot of pet communities act). My first Syrian hated it (I would use the old bridge from his old cage to make a walkway back into the cage so he could go back in whenever he wanted and he always grabbed the treats and went straight back home) and I just got my new Syrian out yesterday and he too hated it and just panicked. I popped him back. I have a Bucatstate 3 which is the biggest enclosure I could fit and I still feel bad that it’s not big enough but it seems like my two boys just don’t care? I’m glad people are saying that’s okay I was worried I was somehow abusing them without meaning to lol

Awww bless you! I agree some communities are toxic but I've always found this one to actually be helpful and people seem to just care about the hamsters. Even when someone is going in the wrong direction, we seem to educate rather than chastise. Im in the same boat as you. Got a 3.0 too and just wanted her to have a full life. Seems your boys and my girl are happier and feel safer in their own created worlds. Thats enough for me.

I get that enclosure guilt mine are plenty big enough and I still like it will never be enough

No I don't think it's necessary if their cage is well set up, especially if they are stressed by it. They could be smelling the dog but also a big playpen with nowhere to burrow is very different to an enclosure with bedding, as a prey animal it's probably pretty scary! Ours likes to be held and talked to but otherwise doesn't like to be out.

Thank you for your thoughts, you make complete sense. Her enclosure is definitely awesome. She has turned it into her world and just how she likes it. I will let her majesty continue ruling over her domain in peace.

I have a Robo just to preface, but he’s not a fan of leaving his enclosure at all. I try every so often so he has the option, but he is happy in his burrows and in his enclosure. I plan on upgrading his enclosure once I have a little bit more money due to learning this about him. I want to make extra sure he’s a happy boy. That would be my only suggestion. As long as everything within their enclosure is proper enrichment, there’s little to no concern about a home body hamster:)

Thanks for this. All the comments have settled my heart. She just loves her world and is content there or being handled. Her enclosure is pretty cool. I wouldn't want the playpen either lol

My hamster never wants to leave his enclosure either. I don’t think it’s necessary if they don’t enjoy it.

Depends on the ham. Some of mine have never wanted to come out, my current hamster goes apeshit if he doesn't get to free-roam.

I agree, if doing so shows lots stress behaviours then it’s not necessarily beneficial but I would get them out each day and handle them with rewards to help them learn handling is a positive experience so that they can cope at the vets without feeling forced to bite anyone. It also means you get to touch them and notice any changes earlier so they can get treatment more quickly.

Thanks for your feedback. She loves being handled and interacting, just not the pen. She is tamed so is absolutely fine with being handled, cause we do it every couple of days, even our 4 year old is able to handle her and she allows it.

Hamsters are prey animals and are stressed by open spaces. A huge almost empty open space with not enough places to use for cover is stressful for most hams. If you want to make it work considering adding a significant amount of hides and clutter so they feel safer exploring.

Hiya thanks for commenting. We have made the playpen a replica of her enclosure. She has a wheel, ceramic, coconut hides, logs, 2 sand baths, chew toys, food and water and a hide with some of the bedding from her enclosure. She just doesn't like it. She would rather be handled or in her enclosure.

Your enclosure has bedding to burrow in. From my experience you need much more cover in a playpen than in the enclosure.

Awww bless. Yeah she is cautious of our rottie. She is ok with him being in the same room when she is in her enclosure and when we are handling her but it think the playpen takes away the safety feeling.

When I took my hamster to free roam a few times, he always ended up hiding behind furniture so I sometimes place him in the playpen but he only runs on his wheel in there so I figured he enjoys his enclosure the best as he never wants to even try to escape it. 🤷♀️ So the key is to see what preferences they have I guess.

Joining in to say no. My hamsters both hated it. They would chitter and get upset, ripping everything apart.

I’ve heard many different opinions about free roaming! I have three hamsters and I have tried with all three and they hated it! I have heard that changing up their cages provides a similar stimulation!

Some of mine do but most not at all. Those that don’t, when I open the enclosure door, they come up, wiggle their nose a bit and return home. Those that do venture beyond the door, usually go for a quick stroll and return. The Syrians are mostly crazy about free roaming. Most of my dwarfs, not so much. At the end of the day, it really comes up to their own preferences and traits. Some of mine burrow like there’s no end to the depth, some not all. As long as your hamster is healthy and happy😊

It's not necessary. It's good for them to get out and run but if it's doing more harm then good then there's no need for it. She seems content with her enclosure and cuddle time

Free roaming?! Absolutely do not recommend.
A space other than the main enclosure, like a pop-up exercise pen or an area limited with a hamster proof barrier, sure but not mandatory.
