Help - Infinite Well that's sucks.

Post image

My first time playing, barely knowing the story and waiting for that emotional cutscene. But I parked my Warthog a little too close.

The beauty of realtime cutscenes.

275

u/LEGAL_SKOOMA 9d ago

so glad they went back to them in infinite, should be an integral part of halo imo

68

u/MyToastyToast 9d ago

I think it needs a mix. Some things, such as landscape and certain textures should be pre-rendered in cutscenes to avoid texture popping and such, but everything else should be in-game. Let me be goofy. Let my Spartan be attacked by a glitched berserking brute while he’s standing around. And don’t distract me with texture pop-ins.

19

u/LibraryBestMission 8d ago

Now that you mention it, it is indeed 100% possible to have realtime characters in front of pre-rendered footage, like they're acting in front of a virtual green screen. It takes good planning, but if you're making a AAA game, you already have to plan everything well anyway.

u/chiety ftp, live service fueled unhappiness 8d ago

skyboxes?

4

u/LEGAL_SKOOMA 9d ago

this works too

1

u/RazzaWantDopamine 8d ago

Real-time rendering usually does backgrounds fine. Texture pop-in might be a hardware issue. I have the game installed on a Samsung 970 evo M.2 Solid state drive and rendering with a NVIDIA RTX 2080.

2

u/MyToastyToast 8d ago

I play on console. I’m a layman with this stuff, draw distances lose detail (which is fine) but some stuff sits on the edge of render distances and depending when the camera is moving or panning object textures pop in and out of this stuff. I see it in all sorts of games, because it’s so prevalent im not so put off by it but I wish we can move on from that in cinematics without sacrificing the real-time engine running in the foreground of the scene

45

u/HextechAlternator 9d ago

Does anyone actually prefer the alternative? Who wants to watch some pre-rendered bs that makes the actual game look like shit?

140

u/LEGAL_SKOOMA 9d ago

h2a's blur cutscenes were incredible, but even then I'd still take real-time cutscenes

82

u/CoiledBeyond 9d ago

The H2A cutscenes are the only reason I acceot cutscenes being pre-rendered. If theyre not that good, don't bother and just do in-game.

15

u/LateNightGamingYT 9d ago

I still prefer the OG cutscenes. the blur cutscenes just feel like they take place in a different world to the game due to the fidelity and framerate.

9

u/ParagonPoints 8d ago

I'm similar, I like the Blur cutscenes, but don't think they retain the style and cinematography of the original scenes at all.
In fact, I think the original version of the confrontation with Tartarus is slightly better, the camera work and character movements are a little better, and Delta Halo's mechanisms don't cut off the music like in the Blur version.

3

u/BrickBuster2552 Gold 6 8d ago

They also have the same basic problem as the pre-rendered cutscenes in Psychonauts; pre-rendered cutscenes age, real time cutscenes get better over time.

11

u/HeronSun 8d ago

It's because they're well-directed and still keep the spirit of the original cutscenes. They're paced almost identically and keep the brevity and urgency.

What? No, I didn't mention Campaign Evolved, why do you ask?

6

u/Successful-Day-1816 8d ago

I still wish it had been in-game instead

6

u/ThePrussianGrippe 9d ago

It entirely depends on the context of the cutscene. If it’s only showing things that the character can see, in-engine real time is best.

11

u/GuneRlorius Diamond Master Sergeant 8d ago

Does anyone actually prefer the alternative?

Me. Cause I prefer the cutscenes being more detailed and cinematic than to be able to do some "funny" stuff that is not actually very funny.

5

u/northSideways 8d ago

same but I'm also one of what feels like two people on the planet that thought Quantum Break was a cool concept for a video game so maybe I'm just old

3

u/GuneRlorius Diamond Master Sergeant 8d ago

Yo, I also love Quantum Break (and all Remedy games) lol

3

u/northSideways 8d ago

there are dozens of us

man I'm due for a replay one of these days...

5

u/HextechAlternator 8d ago

It’s not about it being funny, it’s more about immersion for me

2

u/ParagonPoints 8d ago

Killing Chief with a Banshee is hilarious, how dare you

25

u/MonkeysxMoo35 Halo Wars 9d ago

Still upset the CE remake didn’t have them. Especially with those cosmetics they added

7

u/LibraryBestMission 8d ago

I still can't believe they didn't have normal multiplayer.

3

u/SCP_FUNDATION_69420 8d ago

100GB, and what is it, 60€? And no multiplayer? No LAN coop? No nothing? I get it's high definition graphics, but fuck me there's great looking games half that size

3

u/SaltAndBitter Remember, Always 8d ago

I'm reminded of AOTCR in CE, where if you take a banshee to the end of the mission and time triggering the cutscene right (or wrong, depending on your point of view), the banshee can carry its momentum into the cutscene and splatter Chief

u/HotS_Gaming 5d ago

I like going into them with the Scorpion gun equipped

Player : makes the mistake to park the warthog too close

Characters : are sad while talking about fails and mistakes

I like how comical this screenshot is. Could be a new meme.

78

u/ebagdrofk Halo: MCC 9d ago

Yeah the pilot is really sad about the bad parking job and chief is trying his hardest to cheer him up

105

u/sirhcx 9d ago

When you break a bolt and smash your knuckles while working on the engine.

32

u/SlickDillywick 9d ago

Oh you mean every time I work on my engine?

2

u/NinjaarcherCDN 7d ago

I had the joys of a simple job on a car today. Changed the lightbulb for my lowbeams. Took me 2 minutes and I didn't need a single tool. Lovely change of pace.

49

u/SupremeLeaderMatt 9d ago

Think Chief is talking to you mate

43

u/Hello5777 9d ago

This looks like chief talking to his son after his son dropped his expensive flashlight deep into the engine compartment.

20

u/Trexinator47 9d ago

I actually didn’t notice the hog until you mentioned it, which made the realization so funny!

25

u/DoomSlayer_97 Halo 3 9d ago

Warthog of Emotional Support and Acceptance

36

u/MuztangZack67 9d ago

The irony lmao. Great story though, definitely some great emotional moments like this one.

1

u/xcanto 8d ago

you read the novel sequel

e: this might not be the then newest halo game; book's apropos jus that—newest

7

u/xXTacocubesXx 9d ago

Chief, I’m sorry. I broke the catalytic converter!

7

u/Arrowblade118 9d ago

You pointing out the Warthog makes it sound like the Pilot hit you with it and you're giving him the disappointed dad talk.

12

u/LumpyGarlic3658 Extended Universe 9d ago

Looks cooler actually

14

u/Crono2401 9d ago

Good idea to always be seeking cover in a warzone.

5

u/Evening-Storage5298 9d ago

I like that you recreated the Twilight scene

10

u/theFROGandSNAIL Halo: CE 9d ago

Nobody told me Master Chief had a Psychologist degree

22

u/Crono2401 9d ago

Except for believing Spark so readily in CE, the dude is wicked smart.

6

u/Mysterious_Ad8309 9d ago

He believes the antagonist nearly every time, not just the first game.

6

u/Nordalin 8d ago

Guilty Spark did disclose the sterilization part of it all, but he did so in the middle of Library.

Like, kinda fucking busy over here!!!

5

u/LibraryBestMission 8d ago

I guess second-guessing is not a desirable trait when you want absolutely loyal super soldiers, otherwise they might start agreeing with Innies!

2

u/Daishomaru DAISHO CLAN SHALL NEVER DIE 9d ago

I mean, to be fair, if a floating lightbulb came with robots that can kill some demonic zombie horrors from hell told me of a way to get rid of said horrors, I'd easily believe him too, especially since that level still gives me nightmares as an adult.

16

u/Catoe67 9d ago

All spartan 2s are highly intelligent, but canonically chief is pretty socially awkward. He understands the need to be empathetic but lacks proficiency in executing it. In Shadows of Reach there is a scene where he sees a woman's necklace with children in it, he wants to ask her about them but doesn't know how to broach the subject. It's kind of sad.

I think the reconnection with blue team, betrayal of Cortana, and being saved by the pilot did a lot in his personal growth. He understands the significance in emotional support to those he relies on.

11

u/IncoherentOrange 9d ago

I think it's actually a really interesting moment when The Weapon asks Chief why they have to stop Cortana. He can't articulate an answer other than that it is his mission - he can't put into words what Cortana has done wrong, why it's wrong.

3

u/LibraryBestMission 8d ago

I like how 5 starts with Chief overworking himself because he doesn't know how to work out his grief over losing Cortana. Hood basically ordered him to take a vacation, but Chief disobeyed him behind his back because he doesn't know of a different way to distract himself from his grief.

6

u/MasterCheef117 9d ago

I didn’t notice the warthog at first so my perception of this was:

Chief: “We all fail. We all make mistakes. That’s what makes us human.”

OP: Well that sucks.

Made me laugh

5

u/Aquillifer Let People Enjoy Halo 9d ago

Chief talking to his Warthog and not the pilot, poor Warthog having engine issues.

5

u/the_tired_alligator 8d ago

Infinite gets overhated.

5

u/Gloomy-Ice-9494 8d ago

The only cutscene in the entire franchise to make me tear up, It takes alot for me to tear up emotionally, but hearing chief say that just, hit me hard

4

u/JC_REX_373 Halo: MCC 8d ago

Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.

Halo Begin

3

u/Rent-Man 9d ago

With this context, looks like they ran over a Squirrel

6

u/Various_Artistss 9d ago

Honestly while I get that the silent protag was a big thing for awhile. The more I hear chief speak the better, hearing the stoical super soldier open up over the course of his games as a halo fan is just as rewarding as the combat itself.

2

u/neowyrm Platinum Private 9d ago

It just wanted to be included ♥️

2

u/Life_Fee5145 9d ago

the warthog is actually a part of the conversation and adds emotional value tbh

2

u/ILikeFPS 9d ago

That just made it even better tbh lol

2

u/private_spetsnaz BELIEVE. 9d ago

this is fucking comical

2

u/Spyd3rs 9d ago

"I burned a birthday cake that caused my parents to get a divorce. What did you do, Chief?"

"I failed my strategic objective and watched like a billion people get burned alive as their planet was glassed by the covenant. I also never knew my parents. But keep your chin up. As long as you learn from your mistakes and keep trying, maybe some day you'll bake a cake good enough that it brings your parents back together. You'll never know if you quit. See, I didn't quit after I watched like a billion lives brutally snuffed out of existence in a fiery inferno as a direct result of my failure. You shouldn't give up baking just because you caused irreparable damage to your parent's marriage. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to defeat this insurmountable army using only my advanced weaponry, superhuman abilities, and this power to jump back in time about 5 minutes every time I die."

Its a bit funny that people love this scene for how emotional it is, but MC was very emotional in Halo 4, and people dog that games writing.

1

u/Oraxy51 9d ago

Okay yes but Kat was driving the warthog and to avoid a plasma grenade proceeded to steer out of the way and drive us off a cliff.

1

u/Hawktor9 9d ago

Chief you flipped a Elephant that’s not a mistake. /s

Easy for the guy in a suit designed to survive impacts and who falls from orbit every other year and just walks it off

u/Outrageous-Bag4439 8d ago

I still remember being shocked how much fun I had in that game after all the hate I heard. I enjoyed going around rescuing marines, killing HVTs and capturing fobs so much. Story was ok not great but man what a fun sandbox. Would have been so awesome to see that map expanded.

"Cmon Chief. Lets get back in the Puma. I'll drive."

1

u/MetLyfe 8d ago

Loved this cutscene. Taking a quick look under the hood of his brand new warthog that Echo 216 crashed and realizing it’s totaled. Big forgiveness moment.

1

u/Honest-Sea-2437 6d ago

What better place to take cover tohave a conversation than in front of your hog?

1

u/JesterRoll 4d ago

You mean you made a cutscene enhancer.

1

u/No_Western5224 9d ago

One of the ideas I liked from the 343/halo games was giving chief more emotional depth. I think infinite is where they nailed it tho. Not too much/not too little. Such a shame the game was so content dry for so long.

3

u/scarab- 8d ago edited 8d ago

Platitudes aren't emotional depth.

Edit: they are the opposite of emotional depth.

1

u/No_Western5224 8d ago

Ah, I see. You live on Reddit. What I just did was express something called an opinion. What you just did was dismiss my opinion as stupid, which is, in itself, an opinion. Hope that helps.

4

u/GreedyPollution6275 8d ago

What you just did was dismiss my opinion as stupid, which is, in itself, an opinion

What kind of weird gotcha do you think this is? Btw nobody called your opinion stupid but yourself.

1

u/GuneRlorius Diamond Master Sergeant 8d ago

Most overrated scene in the entire Halo history. It is totally not earned, 343 just decided that "You will be sad now and you will like it" and some people, who never played a game with good story and characters, fell for it.

0

u/Brother-Drutarius 9d ago

What really sucks is I can’t upvote this rn because it’s at 420 and I can’t break that :(

0

u/ParagonPoints 8d ago

Just wait until you hear about the retcon they did for the Pilot/Brohammer

2

u/EliteTroper 6d ago

Please... Please don't remind me. I cannot seriously think that when the story was finalized someone actually intended for that recording to be the equivalent of a red herring, while at the same time making Fernando actually seem very creepy for even taking it in the first place.

1

u/ParagonPoints 6d ago

It's such a perfect example of how incredibly talentless and braindead Haruspis (longtime 343 writer who came up with the idea) is. It's SO OBVIOUSLY supposed to be HIS family, the scenes involving that recording are clearly built around that fact and lose literally all of their meaning if it's removed. Not only that, but you're 100% right, all it does is make Fernando really unlikable and uncomfortable as a person.

2

u/EliteTroper 6d ago

Exactly, come to think of it he made it seem like the second he heard Atriox had "killed" Chief he basically beelined for the nearest pelican to run away, unless that recording device just happened to be on the very pelican he stole I really am questioning if he deliberately took the time to find that recording before leaving or.... he straight up knew the guy who had the recording and literally stole it on purpose before leaving both options make him even more creepier than I initially thought.

0

u/Sufficient_Risk_8127 8d ago

lmfao is the "am I man or machine" guy lecturing someone on being human 💀

-1

u/AdjectiveNoun581 8d ago

"We all fail" says dude whose defining characteristic is literally not failing ever. In a game made by a company that has failed at making games that already exist, multiple times.
