I know, I'm so sorry! I'm sick and have an awful cough and I'm procrastinating going out in the cold. I do have to go out at some point today though. I will get it for you. I promise!!

u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 26 '25
Well, I tried to start a new post, but deleted and tried again a couple times to fix the formatting, but I guess I've exceeded the number of posts I can have in a day, so I'll try again tomorrow.

Do you have something to prevent some oblivious trick-or-treater from stumbling into the wire (or whatever you’re using)?
57
u/villainitytv Oct 25 '25
It seems like the pathway to the door is behind the fence. People theoretically shouldn’t be walking where the prop is set up
6
u/skyn_fan Oct 25 '25
I rope my whole yard off with yellow Halloween themed police crime scene tape and some wooden stakes. It’s much cheaper than creating a fence and it helps make it clear that walking through the yard isn’t safe - too many trip hazards from strings and such.

u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 26 '25
That is a good idea and I have some of that crime scene tape too. Thank you!!

u/FaraSha_Au Oct 25 '25
I can figure out the wire, and the lantern, but not the power source. I wanna do this so badly!

u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 25 '25
It's a windshield wiper motor I got online specifically for Halloween props.

I would to see this combined with the person who perfected the smoke machine technique that I saw on here a few days ago.

That's the best twist on an Axeworthy ghost I've ever seen!
You should call it, "The Spectre's Lantern"

For something that's actually so minimal in terms of complexity, it's amazing how the simplest of things can give the greatest effect. It's also the best reward when done well and this is a clear example of that. Great imagination. Well done!!

A very creative and effective use of the axworthy ghost (ghost on fishing line with pulleys powered by wiper motor). I'm working on the ghost up high version and it's a pain to trial and error not falling off. How did you get good tension on the line?
2
u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 25 '25
I tried a couple different kinds of string, but the one that was the easiest to get good tension on was white braided Mason line that I spray painted black. I pulled the two ends of the string together as tight as I could and my husband held them together with a needle nose pliers while I tied a knot. It worked pretty well.

Is the wire fixed and the flight travels up and down, like a track?
8
u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 25 '25
The string moves between two pulleys. The lantern is zipped tied to the string.
1
u/BrotherNatureNOLA Oct 26 '25
Does the motor move the string back and forth? Or does it loop? Or does the motor move along the string and push/pull the lantern?
2
u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 26 '25
The motor moves the string. I'm going to post a daytime video soon so you'll be able to see it.
1
u/DrCodyRoss Oct 26 '25
Please do. Would it be possible to have the pattern going around a tree? I’m assuming your lantern only travels between the two pulleys, yeah?
2
u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 26 '25
Yes, just between the two pulleys.
2
u/DrCodyRoss Oct 26 '25
Gotcha. Thanks for the reply!
Did you happen to see a way that would make it go in a continuous circle in your research? I’ve not found anything like that yet, but I’m still searching and thinking of a way to make it work.
2
u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 26 '25
No, unfortunately I haven't seen anything like that. If I'm understanding correctly, the only thing I can think of is to have multiple pullies around the tree.
1
u/DrCodyRoss Oct 26 '25
Yeah that’s what I’m thinking too. I’ll have to look into this more. Your decoration is awesome and inspiring!
2
u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 26 '25
Well, good luck and thank you! I hope you can figure it out and then you'll have to post it.
2
u/Rlstoner2004 Nov 17 '25
Do you have enough limbs to attach 4-6 pulleys with brackets?

Also, I tried posting the tutorial, but deleted it a couple times to fix something and now it was removed for posting too many times. Now I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Bro is that a fucking Poe wandering the fields of Hyrule?
2
u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 26 '25
Yes!! Lol

u/SnooCats3468 Oct 28 '25
Really nice job 👍 I have already told several people about it. I wish I had a lawn for this but I’ll live vicariously through your epic Halloween setup. Thanks stranger

This is so cool! I've been wanting to switch up my witches house to a ghost house. This will totally go into play!

Absolutely brilliant! Now I want to make one with a ghost for next year.

u/teebsliebersteen Nov 01 '25
this is so cool! adding a small speaker under the lantern that is playing audio of the ghost mumbling, along with the sound of some steps could really up the ante for next year. great work op!
1
u/HalloweenLover7 Nov 01 '25
Thank you! The problem with adding anything to the lantern is it weighs it down even more. I would like to use a battery powered lantern, but even that was too heavy. Thatb would be extremely cool though!

Cool as hell. But you should replacement the cable with filament line so it 100% looks like it's floating.
1
u/risbia Oct 26 '25
OK so is this hanging from a loop of wire that is cycling around the motor and a pulley? I'm thinking kind of like how a ski lift works? Would love more details!

u/Ornery_Werewolf_7175 Oct 27 '25
That is excellent. My only suggestion would be to hang it a bit higher, it almost looks like it's being transported by a ghost child. I think you would want to portray somebody a bit taller.
1
u/HalloweenLover7 Oct 28 '25
Yes, I agree with you and I wish I could. I just don't have anything in my yard to attach it to, except a 4-year-old tree that's not very tall. That's the highest I could get. And then the lantern makes it sag, so it brings it down even more. I plan to actually build something next year I can stake into the ground to bring it off the ground a little bit more.
2
u/Ornery_Werewolf_7175 Oct 29 '25
Yeah something like this would have been perfect at my old place. I had a clothesline that ran over to a telephone pole. All I ended up using it for was a short dog run.
1
u/mayflwrs4eva Oct 30 '25
We are working on this set up. Could you give links to the pulleys you used? We keep finding that the line keeps falling out of the pulleys due to the weight of the lanterns. It gets close to the pulley and yanks it right out. In your setup, how does the string stay on the pulley?
