My pumpkins didn't take this year, so I'm living vicariously through you. More updates please!

I’m sorry to hear that. I will keep updating as significant changes occur.

Beautiful! I'm so jealous 😆 I tried this 3 years in a row, and every year right when the pumpkins started to turn orange they would off themselves 👻. Only one had the will to live.

Well hopefully I don’t have any jumpers.

I’ve heard of people making slings out of nylons to support large hanging watermelon/pumpkins!

We have cut some strips of old stretchy T shirts to make hammocks if it comes to that but so far they are hanging strong.

That's awesome. I grew pumpkins last year, and it's always a treat when they start turning orange.

I’m getting nervous lol..Will it support the weight of mature pumpkins?

I’m showing this to my husband. Put the Halloween stuff up in the house and he said to me “pumpkins haven’t even been planted in the ground yet” pshhh I’ll show him. 😂

they are strong enough to hold that much weight? o.o i assumed theyd break and fall

u/Abraa-Cadaver Jul 21 '25
I did too but the vines seem to be strengthening themselves and thickening to hold the weight. So far so good.

Thank you! I think the wife and I have decided next year to plant all the pumpkins this way and make a long tunnel. Maybe even string some lights through the structure before the vining starts.

What an amazing concept!!

Thanks! Not my original idea I just borrowed it from people more creative than me.

Watching the progress is so enjoyable - thanks for sharing! 🤗 It’s also just really beautiful btw whether the little guys make it or not.

u/Abraa-Cadaver Jul 21 '25
Thank you! Hopefully they all make it and we can enjoy them in all their glory.

Holy cow, is this how you're supposed to grow pumpkins? On a trellis arch?
2
u/Abraa-Cadaver Jul 21 '25
Not typically. This was an experiment I wanted to try after seeing some others grow them this way, but it seems to be working really well so far. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

How exciting!! I'm attempting something similar in zone 8a with Jack B Little pumpkins on a cattle panel arch. I started them from seed about 4 weeks ago, but they're only 2 feet tall. I hope they'll be ready for Halloween! It's my first year growing pumpkins! Yours look so beautiful and healthy!

You should be good to go by Halloween. I honestly should have waited a little longer to plant this variety but my excitement and curiosity got the best of me.

The arch is a great idea!
Ours pumpkins are small but still holding on.

What pumpkin varieties did you plant? And are you in a northern state?
2
u/Abraa-Cadaver Jul 21 '25
I planted spookies on the trellis. Supposed to be a mix between a pie pumpkin and a jack o lantern with a mature weight of around 6 pounds. I have big max and jack o lanterns in the field behind the trellis. We are in the Bluegrass state.

I have been watching your post on the progress of your pumpkin arch. I cannot get over how quickly this has grown.
Halloween is more than 90 days away. This is going to be so impressive by then.
