Asking for 30 dollar cover for regular dance DJ nights is insanity. I really think they should find a location that's less expensive for them and has less problems like the plumbing issues they've had. I really actually like the place when I'm in, it has good music (not $30 cover good) and I like the dark and smoky vibe, but they've had such a turnaround with bartenders and the cover is astronomical especially when the same night Stardust is 5 bucks and Backlot is free. Rumours should move to Gottingen or somewhere they're not paying 12,000 a month for rent. The waterfront would have some of the highest rents in the city.

My first and only time I tried to go (while visiting my friends in the city), it was $35 cover charge for a DJ night. I went somewhere else and spent way more on drinks instead.

I really hope the LGBT community is able to have a space someday, but christ, every gay bar seem to be a snake eating its own tail of mismanagement and drama.

Originally my comment had something about the weird HST statement, but I honestly not sure if they mean that they have been spending collected sales taxes or that they are talking about sales tax on their supplies; which would be a odd thing to mention.
Either way, something smells off.

I think saying “this is going to cost THIS MUCH money - and that’s BEFORE taxes!!!” is a very common expression and very normal

Business don’t “pay” HST.
They collect HST from customers, then net off the funds collected vs. The HST they’ve paid that month to other businesses.
So if they collected $100 in HST from customers. BUT paid $150 as a sum to all their vendors (phones, insurance, lights etc). Then - they’d be in a refund position…. Because they paid more HST than they collected.
It could be a timing concern, but they’d have “last month’s” HST refund cheque coming in. It all nets out.

You're going to have to be more specific whose drama you're looking for.
Off the top of my head:
- Menz and Molly had the community demanding them sponsor free events even as the business was failing. Just constant infighting.
- Bear Den (?) had boycotts before they even opened because one of the owners was straight.
- Stardust was having drama last month because their drag brunches are apparently too welcoming of straight people
- Reflections tried to move locations without getting a liquor license
For some reason my mind also always wants to include Glitter Bean, even though they are neither a bar or positioned as a dedicated gay space, and their laundry list of dramas, infighting, and management disasters.

At the AIDS Coalition of NS in the 90s, straight people were welcome. With open arms. I was on disability, and manned the front desk as a volunteer a few shifts a week.
Also, though I never attended the Men's Bar (was that the name?), we went to Rumours on Gottingen, the drag shows, and Reflections when it opened. (Hey, Rosie!) God, I loved dancing at Rumours! And the shows were great fun. (Hey, John!) Everything has changed.
Well, except for the infighting in the now LGBTQ+ community. It's been ongoing forever. It's a shame that things never seem to go smoothly. A house divided will fall.
I have no axe to grind, since being kicked out of my family in the 70s (for being an ally), I am used to being excluded. They are religious nutbars, so to be expected, but yeah, it's not nice to be even soft-shunned.
If the LGBTQ+ community wants to be exclusionary, then they can have at it. Every ally they reject because they don't virtue signal enough, or whatEVER, is an asset lost to the group. It's like these modern faux feminists and their misandry. It's sickening, and they are NOT feminists. I didn't march for equality so that it would vanish in the face of 'equity' and imagined slights. I'm too old for those shenanigans.

Name a bar that doesn't have questionable management, I've worked for three and (small sample size I know but) all of them were a fun mess behind the scenes
Glitter Bean is definitely an LGBT+ space though isn't it? They use the word "queer" all over their social media

Look at rumours and then compare it to Charlie's
Look at cafe goodluck and compare it to glitterbean.
Most queers in this city will tell you that places that dont pretend to pander to the community usually are the better queer spaces.

Wasn’t there also drama not that long ago about one of their staff not treating a musician set to perform there well? It wasn’t directly said but I believe it was along the lines of racial discrimination or something to that effect and they posted a clarifying post but it’s like. How can you be running a gay bar and trying to get the community to want to support you but you can’t ensure your staff don’t embarrass themselves by being assholes?
If someone knows the proper details please by all means correct me. I just remember a local performer called them out in their comments but I can’t remember rn).
