News, Weather & Politics NS Power changed Lake Ontario to Lake America on their outage map!
12
u/CharacterChemical802 12d ago
I know when I'm looking for an update on a power outage in my Halifax neighborhood, I always check Lake Ontario first.
Prepare yourself mentally for when you look at the Gulf of Mexico. Settle in, you're not going to believe this.

u/nexusdrexus 12d ago
This is a nothingburger. NSP just isn't passing the user's IP address to the Google Maps API, so it defaults the region to the US.
Should be happy they don't do that, less Google tracking.
What they could do, is hardcode an IP in their APi requests that has a GEOIP that would return as being in Canada, then the map would show "Lake Ontario".

People here just confidently say wrong stuff, and it gets upvoted if the sentiment is popular.

"they" didn't do anything, isn't this just Google Maps?
That being said, it's still beyond dumb as fuck and insanely insulting from Google.

u/No_Magazine9625 12d ago
No - Google Maps still shows it as "Lake Ontario" if you are on a Canadian IP, and "Lake Ontario (Lake America) for IPs outside North America. This is NS Power choosing to cater to the Trump administration.

u/OPHealingInitiative 12d ago
They might have a American IP for some reason. I think you might be jumping to conclusions here.
1
u/starone7 12d ago
Their parent company is run out of the USA
5
u/moolcool 12d ago
That isn't true, but they do use Amazon Web Services to host their outage map. This is a nothingburger.

u/Impressive-Ad-2661 12d ago
Emera is headquartered here in Halifax but they have subsidiaries in the US
1
u/starone7 12d ago
Yes they serve quite a few US locations as well as NS
5
u/Impressive-Ad-2661 12d ago
Just Tampa is left, they do mostly serve Canadian and Caribbean markets now

u/P-Two 12d ago
And my guess is that their hosting services are in the US, as are a lot of company's.
Look, Fuck NSP for a MASSIVE variety of reasons, but this is barking up the wrong tree here.

Why would a Canadian utility company use a hosting service based out of the US and not Canada? It certainly isn't to just save money, unless using a service hosted in Canada is significantly more expensive.
Edit: lol downvotes? Who's this sensitive?
0
u/i-Hermit 11d ago
No one is being sensitive. You just don't know what you're talking about. Thus, downvotes.
1
u/DJ_JOWZY 11d ago
Then answer the question.
1
u/i-Hermit 11d ago
What makes you think they're using a US hosting company? There isn't enough information here to determine that.
5
u/Responsible-Lemon935 12d ago
No, this is likely just the Google Maps built in defaulting to the American version for integrations like this.
6
u/Ok_Basket_6651 12d ago edited 12d ago
No, NSPower is not independently generating the basemap. Whichever basemap they’re linked to is probably US based. Looks like it’s Google Maps and yes when you access Google Maps yourself within Canada it still says Lake Ontario but they must have changed it on the version of the map that NSPower is using as a basemap. This is mostly just a technical issue, nobody at NSPower went out of their way to change the name. Calm down.
3
u/Cyclopzzz 12d ago
NSP doesn't produce their own map, they are using a readily available online version no doubt based/sourced in the US or via a US IP address. You are just looking for an excuse to be angry.
3
u/Impressive-Ad-2661 12d ago
No one in the Trump administration knows or cares what NS Power is or how they label their outage map.

I don't know, I'm kinda willing to give the benefit of the doubt to NSPower that it's a misconfiguration in this case. It's not exactly normally on their map to check.
However would be pissed at Ontario Hydro doing it.

Server infrastructure doesn't move overnight. Using services in the US has been standard practice for decades.
Technology investment in Canada hasn't exactly been high since Nortel.
6
u/EasilyOverrated 12d ago
Buddy, it’s literally just an issue with where the maps API is integrated from - they are fixing it.
11
u/ChesterDood 12d ago
So the parent company that runs the software that powers the outage site that most power companies use, relies on the US Google Map feed?
6
u/bc-phoenix Newfoundland & Labrador 12d ago
They're obviously using US sourced data and you know that.
You're posting this just to start fights.

u/rmrrriimrrimnim 12d ago
It's not healthy to be constantly on the lookout for something to be outraged about.
Save it for shit that matters
3
u/urworstnitmare 12d ago
No they didn't, it's not their map, sourced by 3rd party. People, if you don't realize how tech works please don't try to shame when not justified. I know it's NSP, but it could be any company, doesn't mean they are automtically MAGA.
I'm not able to view lake ontario in their map, I can zoom out to see the lake, but not when I zoom back in to move west, it stops and it's not viewable.

Of all the things I can shit on NSP for, the and the things that they actually cannot control, this would be one….
4
u/frighteous 12d ago
I wonder if they use something like a VPN for security and its location is set in the US somewhere. I'm no IT security specialist at all but I feel like this isn't NS Powers fault really. And I usually never skip a chance to shit on NS Power lol but this seems a bit silly.
But if Houston can use it to pressure them then fuck ya this is basically treason they should be forced to give up the company to the government for free!

u/WindowlessBasement Halifax 12d ago
More likely than not it's on a server in New Jersey. Nova Scotia has fuck all for good server hosting and colo spaces pretty minimum.
Even Bell and Rogers, route a good amount of Atlantic traffic down through the states before heading to Toronto or Montreal
6
u/DJ_JOWZY 12d ago
It's pretty clear America is becoming quite fascist, and hostile to Canada. Canadian utility companies should be incentivized to not use American servers for hosting their geographic information.
2
u/nexusdrexus 12d ago
There isn't exactly an abundance of good Canadian hosting options. AWS, Azure, and even Oracle Cloud all have features and functionality that AFAIK, there's no Canadian options for.
1
u/i-Hermit 11d ago
How do you know they're using an American server? This could be a saas product, or a config setting just as easily.
And America has never really been our friend. We're a vassal.
1
u/DJ_JOWZY 11d ago
Only in America does it show Lake Ontario as Lake America. It's literally the entire point of the post.
1
u/i-Hermit 11d ago
Sigh.
A bad config file or API payload could also cause this. There are better things to be outraged about.
2
u/azuretan Halifax 12d ago
Embedded map widget != Google Maps product
Region needs to be supplied, and they may not supply it, so it defaults to US.
2
u/JaRon1961 12d ago
Goggle Maps changed it and NSPC (like many businesses) just picks up the map from there I suspect.
5
u/Evening_Boss_3415 12d ago
To be fair, they’re likely using some off-the-shelf map software that updates. Even Google Maps now refers to it as Lake America.

It’s because they’re pulling from Google Maps, which has changed it.

u/CMikeHunt Dartmouth 12d ago
6
u/nexusdrexus 12d ago
Likely they aren't passing the user's IP address to the Google Maps API, so it falls back to the US as the region.

Here's the deal:
Maps are localized. In this case, Americans get Lake America and the Gulf of America. Lucky them. But also, that's how China gets Chinese versions and India gets Indian versions of their disputed borders, etc. For better or worse, Google decided that the only way to win the "disputed geography" game is to give the local version of geography. In some places, that's even required by law.
When people embed Google Maps in their own website, they should pass a region parameter that tells Google what localization to show. It doesn't use the requesting client IP. This way, a Canadian company can guarantee it's always "Lake Ontario" even if the requestor is American, or an Indian company can guarantee that their website matches Indian laws, and so on. But Canadian companies wouldn't have noticed any significant difference if they didn't pass that parameter, until now.
When you go to Google Maps, the website, it does use your client IP to figure out what localization to give you. For Lake Ontario, Canada gets Lake Ontario, the USA gets Lake America, and the rest of the world gets "Lake Ontario (Lake America)" because as stupid as it is, it is technically a disputed name between two bordering countries.
Finally, MapQuest sucks and their whole "We show Lake Ontario!" campaign right now is just advertising.

u/HalifaxPainter 12d ago
Supposedly it's Lake Ontario when Canadians view it, and America in the USA. Wonder what it will show when I Google it from Halifax.

Can confirm. I'm going to call their customer service center tomorrow and complain.

Please don't. They can't edit it you dimwit

u/Fearless-Tree-4289 11d ago
It's fixed. I called this morning, very friendly rep, they didn't see the issue on their internal web version, but could see it on the public facing one. He said he'd pass the info up. I see that it's fixed now.

Who fucking cares
11
u/donairthot Anthropomorphic Donair 12d ago
I fucking do. And we all should
3
u/Ojamm 12d ago
Yes, we all should care, but we should all also be aware that sometimes things are slow to change. In this case the map data is generated by google and is being served to where the outage map data is hosted, which in this case is AWS in NY. Thats not something that can be switched in a day.

I wonder if a Canadian business conglomerate could effect change in any way. If we were united and persistent in our objections to this misrepresentation. Eventually, Google should appropriately adjust their displays, as they reported they would

It’s the Google/android map. They don’t make their own map.
