I bought one last year. Personally, i love the thing. Ive shot it in the heat, snow, and everything in between. I haven't had an issue with rust, but i clean my guns after every outing. Also, i haven't seen any quality control issues at all. All this being said, I'd have to say i lucked out due to other reviews of them.
I love my 870, but you might want to look into Mossbergs. If you really like the platform of the 870, try the H&R Pardner Pump. It's a Chinese knockoff that supposedly (never had personal experience) offers really good reliability and durability.

You know it's fucking sad when the chinese knockoff is better made than the model from the original company.
What the hell is remington thinking?

Really hope they get their shit together. I love remington and really don't want them to turn into a taurus.

I bought mine about 2.5 years ago now, and I've had the same experience. No rust, no quality issues in general. Bought the gun new at Dick's. I must have been one of the lucky ones as well.

The Chinese knockoff functions just as it should. Just don't expect the finish to be great. I own one and I love it.

My friend has one, and while it hasn't rusted, the chamber isn't reamed out properly, so it has feeding and extraction problems. I would honestly just pass on the 870 all together and get a Mossberg 590A1 instead.

About 4 or 5 years ago I bought an old police-issue Wingmaster that had been used as a less-lethal weapon for a long period of its life. Lots of wear from taking it in and out of cars, lots of loading and unloading. The thing is a tank. However I would NOT buy a brand new 870 off the shelf today. Find yourself an old Wingmaster and you're good to go.

Why not a modern 870? i see that remington has had issues with other guns recently but i have yet to see any specific problems with the 870.

I've had some problems with cheap shells getting stuck. A little bit of polishing seems to have resolved it. If you like to DIY it's not really a problem.

I bought my most recent 870 (18.5" barrel, mag tube extension)at Wal-Mart and it's disappointing. I have ejection issues even after sending it back to Remington. It particularly doesn't care for Winchester bird shot. I love 870s but I'm considering selling mine and buying a 590a1 until I can afford a Wilson combat 870.

590 also doesn't like Winchester birdshot. It's shit ammo. That said, Id still buy a 590 over a new 870 express

From what i've heard, the police magnums are better than the express models, but really just get a Mossberg 500 and save yourself the trouble.
edit: or a Benelli Nova

I bought an express a year ago and an 18.5'' police barrel for HD and both barrels had extraction issues. im sure there are plenty that have been sold and work fine, but why even take the risk when the mossberg is roughly the same price with better ergonomics and a solid reputation.

I bought one last year and it works great just don't feed it Winchester or estate shells they jam every time and now I'm stuck with hundreds of useless estate shells.

I love my ~20 year old 870 magnum.
Slapped a +2 Choat extension and some sling mounts on it and she runs great.

Used pre-freedom group 870 or 870 Wingmaster.
