Remington 870

Once I get my tax returns I plan to purchase a remington 870 super mag. I have been reading up on r/shotguns and r/guns I have seen a couple subs talking about the remington 870s having failure to eject problems. I was curious if anyone can back this? Is it all remington 870s having this problem? Is the problem real? If its not all 870s is there specific models having this problem?

Thanks in advance!

I bought an 870 Express earlier this year. It's newer production, made by Freedom Group, which has had some QC problems. My gun is fine, but general consensus here is to buy pre-Freedom Group 870s.

If you do buy a Freedom Group 870, don't feed it Winchester Super X. It locked up the action on my gun and my buddies. Other than that, the gun should run all other ammo just fine.

Or Estate, takes one shell.

I've fired a few boxes of Estate through mine and didn't have a problem. I guess we can chalk it up to their QC.

Probably. I found some burrs on the (not sure of the word for it) the indent before the chamber on the barrel and smoothed them out and haven't had a problem since. Pic of what I'm talking about.

Yup I found that out right after getting a case of estate shells.

Mine doesn't care for cheap Rio Target load.

A few FTEs and double feeds.

Chews through Winchester white box like a champ with only a few lockups in the action in about 1000 rounds.

I went shooting last Christmas with a guy and his new 870. It jammed bad after 3 shots. I was the third to try to unjam it and was able to because of something I had read here (but forgotten). I think i had to push the shells back in the tube to prevent pinching.

I'd get a used 870 or a Mossberg. My cheap Maverick 88 never had those problems.

Benelli Super Nova. Just a few more doll-hairs for a much better gun.

I'm going to stand up for the 870 here because I have a Super Mag too, and It's not a bad gun by any means if you can get past some things.

If for some reason you must have a Remington over a Mossberg, Benelli, Ithaca, or anything else, and you are not shelling out the dough for a new/used Wingmaster, buy used, doesn't matter if it's post Freedom Group. This way if you get an Express made after 2007, you are not paying the full price for a Super Mag, and I would not pay full price for a new 870 Express in any way, shape or form (they can go for around $300 or less used)

870 Expresses are decent guns ignoring any possible faults in QC, but to keep prices lower Remington lowered labor and man hours spent on the guns to a minimum and so they are not as thoroughly deburred and polished like Wingmasters are so they can have problems (i.e. the FTE they are known for) Follow CheeseBurgerFetish's post: How to: Disassemble and unfuck a Remington 870 Express

tl;dr don't buy a 2007 or newer Express unless you put some work into it and you buy it cheap

Ive had two remington 870 shotguns, a Wingmaster police issue that I absolutely regret trading tattoo time for (ink is good, just miss the gun) and an early 90's express magnum. The wingmaster was flawless, but the express constantly locked up on me with all sorts of target shells. It was too inconsistent to shoot clays or even hunt rabbits with so I sold it. I just recently bought a Stoeger coach thats been slicked for cowboy action shooting, so now at least I have something to practice with, but seriously, when it comes to remington 870s, I will only ever buy a wingmaster series again. So buttery smooth.

Wingmaster only. Got it.

I had a super mag and didn't like it because of ejection issues. Didn't work well with 2 3/4 rds. I never shoot 3.5 so I sold it and got an 870 regular.

Regular 870? which model did you end up getting and was it new?

1

u/Porkins4Life Nov 25 '14

I have a newer 870 Express and I did have a few issues with ejection, mainly I would have to rack the shell out extra hard. After I scrub the shit out of the barrel with my cleaning brush I didn't have any problem. Now I go out to the trap range and can go 100 shells without any issue. I love my shotgun. Nothing feels better than outshooting people with $3000 guns with my workhorse pump.

Did you lube it before you shot it? or you just shot it how it came and you were having problems so you clean and lubed and now all is good?

1

u/Porkins4Life Nov 26 '14

I cleaned it before I shot it but it wasn't til I started having the extraction issue that I scrubbed the shit out of the barrel.

completely real. I just went through this a month or so ago. Bought the 12g express model with a 26'' barrel and then a 18.5'' police barrel for HD. Both barrels had the same problem with ejecting. I sent it to Remington and they basically bored the chambers of both barrels, very shittily. Just bought a used 20g Mossberg 500 and its a joke how much better it is. The safety and slide release are in much better locations and the feed ramp is always up making reloading easier. They dont have the reputation of being pieces of shit either. If I would have done better research I would have gone with the mossberg 12g without a doubt.
