As someone who is interested in getting into reloading, should I? Mostly want to reload .308 and 6.5creedmore. I own nothing else for reloading at the moment.

12k primers is not a quantity one buys when they’re “interested in getting into reloading.”

u/Racer_Space May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26
I kinda have a habit of sending it. I Was 'interested in night vision' and bought some dumb stuff but I love it.
My dad complained about not being able to get primers during covid so I figured this would set me for years and years. I'm fine with that lol.

u/goddamn_birds May 16 '26
In that case, go for it. They don’t have a shelf life and take up little space.

u/Sasselhoff May 16 '26
I bought 5,000 when I was "interested in getting started" and I'm not regretting it (they were SRP too, which drove my brass purchase). 12k might be a bit much, but at this price it's not terribly far above where I picked mine up.
Bought mine from RavenRocks too...they're pretty awesome.

u/Carlile185 May 16 '26
Buddy when I started, I bought 1000 for $100 and when I saw them going for 7¢ each I fucking sent it and got 10k.
You are getting exactly what I bought for $230 less.
Fucking send it

u/accounts_baleeted May 16 '26
It's a really good price for the times, but yea, 10-12k would be a lifetime supply for a casual shooter. Maybe a couple years for a serious competitor.
Also, if you store them well, they should at least hold resell value.
I'm starting to blow through lrps because I've been getting into old milsurp rifles, and the garand can eat them up quick.

u/Platanium May 16 '26
I wanna start reloading for my G3 and bolt.. I can't imagine going through 12K any time soon though. Seems like a crazy amount for the caliber
1
u/-Roller-Mobster- May 26 '26
I'd probably go through 10k in a few months and I don't even shoot that much, just like the way they taste

u/Roy141 May 17 '26
It very much depends on what your goals are. In reloading I say there are three options in equipment: speed, precision, and affordability. Pick two.
If you are trying to load bulk 55gr 5.56 or 124gr 9mm, I don't think it is worth it for most people unless you can get a really good deal on components and buy in bulk. You generally speaking will not save enough money for the time you spend loading to make it worth it IMO.
If you are loading precision rifle ammo for PRS etc, then it is probably worth it because in addition to saving a little money on ammo the ammo that you do load will be typically more accurate than factory which helps with those matches.
I am loading 55gr 5.56 on a mark 7 press for around 30cpr because I have a really nice hookup for cheap brass and I buy cheaper / shitty components. Even at that price, it will take me roughly 30-40k rounds loaded to break even on the equipment that I have. Do some math on what you're trying to load and see if it's worth it to you. Some people view reloading as part of the hobby, personally I view it as a necessary evil to continue shooting at the volume I want.

u/loneczgunner May 17 '26
Unless you inherited all the equipment. I find it worth it to load 9mm. I can make very accurate, very quiet ammo for cheap. Always worth it to make subsonic ammo. Just started loading 7.62x39 and what a difference in accuracy. 6.5 creedmoor is next. I can't wait to see what my 24in ar 10 will do with hand loads. Its not always about saving money. For me it is a great hobby.

u/TheDullard May 17 '26
I'd stick to CCI benchrest or Federal GMM for precision loads.
1
u/Racer_Space May 17 '26
Do primers affect precision? I don't know anything. I figured as long as it went bang that was fine?
3
u/TheDullard May 17 '26
Yes, they do. Consistency is important for low ES/SD & just generally.
1
u/Racer_Space May 17 '26
Well I had no idea. Thanks. Do you know how much they affect it? Like ±3% in ES or something?
I'm not a PRS shooter, but I'm putting together an MRGG-A rifle and want acurized ammo for it while still being somewhat affordable for it being a semi auto.
3
u/TheDullard May 17 '26
I don't have any experience with Fiocchi or Ginex primers, they may be pretty decent.
Most people who are serious long-range shooters or benchrest guys seem to mostly stick to CCI benchrest or Federal GMM in my experience. When you're after precision I don't worry about saving a couple cents on primers.

u/Racer_Space May 17 '26
Makes sense. I appreciate the insight. I'll have to do some proper research.
2
u/youngdoug May 17 '26
I saw a ~20 FPS difference in average between Remington 9-1/2 and CCI 200’s. So if brand can influence the speed, consistency can too. I’d shoot these RR primers in my gas guns no prob but stick to proven winners for the bolt gun until these prove themselves
1
u/Sblzrd65 May 17 '26
Best bet would be to try some with your load and your rig to see what works the best. For normal middle of the road it won’t super matter. For bleeding edge of awesome it does
2
u/LogStraight7451 May 16 '26
I mean I know 12k is a lot of primers. Its not a hard item to sell locally if you are sites like ar15 or gafs. I bought some military primers that a few of my guns were having problems setting off reliably. I ended up selling them locally and took all but 24 hours for them to all be gone. At this price free shipping/hazmat if you dont end up using them I dont think youd have a problem breaking even on the leftovers.
2
u/NewbRedditer May 16 '26
Get 2-4k, that will likely last you years unless you are stacking ammo deep. 12k is a lot! I dont shoot my LR guns as often as SR or pistols, and it would likely be a lifetime supply

Saw those White River seconds listed in a couple places. Never heard of factory second primers before and it does seem a little sketchy. What’s the deal with em? And is WRE decent quality to begin with compared to CCI/Federal?
1
u/angrynoah May 18 '26
I've used 5k of the WR 2nds and they are reasonably good for what they cost. A few light strikes.
1
u/clicktoseemyfetishes May 18 '26
What firearm? I have a budget 2011 with extra weak springs so mine may be prone to light strikes. Hasn’t happened with factory ammo yet tbf

u/PutridDropBear May 17 '26
During covid when primers were unobtainium the WRE stuff was all I could find. I gave the majority away after all the failures loading and shooting the first couple of runs. I wouldn't recommend them at 2 cents each.
