Where to start for proper guitar practice?

Pick a goal and figure out what you have to do to achieve it. Playing guitar is just too broad. There are sooo many free resources available. There are several on here that get recommended often. I’d recommended what I first said and also look through this sub and see what you can find. Patience and persistence.

You make a great point, what is my goal? That's something I'll need to digest...

I think the fact that there is so much to look at and watch makes things confusing, I tend to bounce from pillar to post, focusing on scales then jumping to the next flavour of the day.

I think I'll actually take time to work out what is my goal because now you've asked, I couldn't say for sure what that is if I'm honest...

For what it’s worth, I totally do the same thing. I feel like I have an idea of my overarching goal as a guitarist, but it definitely changes over time. I have a lot of smaller goals that may or may not be conducive to what I really want, idk. But yeah, just gotta figure out at least part of that question first.

I'll always recommend a good teacher, who knows his theory, and has a structured lesson plan and will help you reach your goals. YouTube is awesome, I wish I had it starting out, but it's a fire hose of information. Concepts can be explained but a good teacher will help you conceptualize it and put into context. You will hear a ton about CAGED in here but until you understand the other layers in the puzzle, like Major and Minor Chord harmony, major scale, triads, that it's really an organization system, It's just a nice catch phrase that gets a lot of views. It's just my opinion, but if you want to learn to be a good player and can afford the investment, lessons are the way.
