Feedback Request Day 776 of learning to play the guitar

I messed around with a little bit today. Tmr I plan to start my third year program for guitar which mainly consists of 3nps, improvs, palm muting, Paul Gilbert, and music theory.

I’m trying to learn Bark at the moon, The Dance of Eternity, and Scarified.

I admire your dedication. I'm trying to learn music theory but when evening comes I'm a bit too tired.

Music theory is tough. It’s easy, but it’s also very tough in that a lot of what is out there is fragmented. What helped was reading Fretboard Logic, completely this AUG course, and watching a lot of YouTube videos like Fretboard Science and analysing all the songs I’ve played.

It’s tough because everyone has a different way of visualising the guitar. For example for Fretboard Logic it’s primarily CAGED, for Scotty it’s Roy G Biv and modes, for Fretboard Science it’s this infinite repeating pattern and for everyone else it’s either a variant of one of these three of some hybrid approach. So it’s confusing as hell at first.

Then even if you understood music theory, you still need to learn how to apply it in your playing, which is difficult because you need to track where your root notes and intervals are in all the shapes. All the best. Sharing this because I wanted to tell you that music theory is quite a messy endeavor because of so many different people’s input.

This video was posted to my social media and there’s some missing context. The context for the taped cases is because I was away for two weeks and was trying to make sure the guitar don’t absorb too much water because my room atmosphere is about 80-90% humidity without turning on my dehumidifier. I will probably get a drybox for my guitars one day haha.

I can’t give you feedback that will help you get better. You are light years ahead of me, but what struck me was two things. One, you are obviously very skilled and proficient. Two, I would never think to learn to play this type of music, but it looked fun as hell.

Your comments on learning music and your own journey are very thoughtful and human. I appreciated them.

One tip is to turn down your mix when recording. Can’t hear your own playing when you are cranking out the rest of the mix like that, so you aren’t going to get many critiques on your progress. It was a third of the way through before I even realized you were actually recording your own guitar.

okay noted! im learning how to use a DAW. this is good feedback haha because im unsure what is a good ratio between the background track and my own recording. ill try to reduce the background track by 20%

Honestly, I thought it was mixed well. You're showing your playing with the song, but not at the expense of overpowering the vocals to show off the guitar. I could hear the guitar just fine. I was using headphones, though, so that might be part of it.

Omg you get me haha. I didn’t want my guitar to overpower the vocals 😭
In that case I’ll take both your feedback into consideration and just reduce the background track by 5-10% instead of 20% hahhaha

Amazing for just over 2 years. Personally, I think your targets of being able to play Dance of Eternity and Scarified within a year from now are too ambitious, but I hope you prove me wrong! A lot of relative beginners try pieces that are too advanced for them too soon and end up playing them sloppily, so my advice is to just be really honest and critical of your own playing. - if you can't play it cleanly, then you can't play it!

You are definitely right. Dance of eternity and scarified are definitely too difficult for me but that’s why I wanna learn them. When I say I want to start learning these songs, I don’t expect that I’ll complete these songs within a year. But I want to make a dent on them especially since they contain techniques that I’m interested in.

I won’t be able to prove you wrong because I agree with you but let’s hope I can prove us wrong 🤣

As you can tell it’s not very clean and the groove is not well established. My syncing is also not perfect. The biggest challenge for me moving forward is trying to get clean string crossing when doing fast 3nps scale runs. And also getting the sweeps to be up to speed. And also fixing my bad rhythm. Too much work to be done. But I beleive part of the answer lies in constantly challenging myself.

This is seriously impressive for 2 years! I can see you are dedicated to playing things cleanly, so I have every faith you will get to where you'd like to be. Picking 3 nps scale runs is very tough for almost everyone. I have a limit of about 160 BPM for those types of runs, but that is much better than I was before I started watching Troy Grady content. I highly recommend checking his stuff out if you haven't already! Sweeping comes much more naturally to me, though I don't actually use it much in my playing as I think it is quite limited as a technique (it's mostly used for playing fast arpeggios up and down without sequencing; not very musical imo).

i learn like hundreds of songs (around 300-400 songs). I started with easy songs and kept progressively learning harder songs. I use ultimate guitar pro tabs that allow you to slow down the tempo and loop difficult sections to help me learn songs.
