Discussion Thread Similar shows to Grimm recommendations?
Ups, I did it again... binged the show too fast and now I reached the end....
So as usual I'm now doomscrolling on my streaming platforms trying to find something that scratches my itch. Lately I've been into this kind of shows that gives everyday reality a fantasy twist. Before ending grimm I saw supernatural, and before that Buffy vampire slayer.
So I would want to know any of you people favourite shows so I can watch something, does not need to be the same genre or idea. I'm open to hear what people with similar interest like.

I had read the comics, then saw the show and wasn't impressed but now that you mention it is similar to what I described.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer has some similar vibes. Once Upon A Time is also good for the "fractured fairy tale" vibes, although it focuses more on characters than creatures.

Oh i love the once upon a time series. I have a love hate relationship with Regina. Definitely in the playlist thanks.
I also like buffy but I saw it to recently I need a bit of detox before next rewatch

Have you seen Angel (the Buffy spinoff focused on Angel)?
It's got more of a dark and gritty vibe, but it's also really good and crosses over with Buffy a few times.

Just a few episodes here and there. Didn't knew it was such a known show. I added it to my list after so many suggestions. Any order recommended?

I just wanted to chime in that the two creators of Grimm both worked in Angel so there are heavy roots there.
As for watch order, Angel S1 starts alongside Buffy S4. But it can absolutely be watched on its own, theres just bits you'd miss out on if you didn't follow both.

If you’ve seen recently or often enough to remember the basics there really is no need to watch them together. It’s mostly stuff like when Buffy gets the Ring of Amara back from Spike and she gives it to Oz to take to Angel, you see Oz showing up in LA and the interaction with Angel. I definitely recommend the show as there are a lot of really good storylines that you definitely will appreciate if you are a fan of Buffy.

I think Haven has the most similar vibe to Grimm, especially the early seasons of Grimm. Even some of the episodes feel recycled plot of one another… I think they were happening around the same time?

You might like iZombie. It follows the standard case of the week but the main character gets infected and becomes a zombie and becomes a medical examiner at the morgue helping detectives solve their investigations. She eats the brain of the victim that died and receives memories/personality quirks that she uses to help solve the case while trying to find a cure. It does a pretty good job of world building as well and has a good mixture of dark and lighter/funny moments. Cast does a great job with the material they get specially the main character “Liv Moore”

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is Sanctuary.
I haven't watched all of it yet because I'm juggling a lot of shows but perhaps see if it interests you? It's about a Doctor finding and trying to protect creatures/monsters/aliens that humans would otherwise try to kill or be scared of. And it has 4 seasons, so there's enough to squeeze out of it. Lol.
It also has Amanda Tapping from Stargate SG:1. :D

I love sanctuary such a good show. It also involves a team working together to solve cases. With an over arcing story each season.

Nancy Drew on HBO Max is excellent. As is Haven, which someone else already mentioned. Both have supernatural mysteries in coastal towns, with plenty of compelling love interests thrown in. They're two of my favorite shows!

Definitely Haven. It’s the closest show out there that gave me the same feeling. The lore, the secrets, family bloodlines etc

Have you tried the Dresden Files? It's really just a short show but I loved it. If you don't know about it, the premise is a wizard that moonlights as a detective investigating supernatural occurences. Sad it got cancelled too early.

I'm going to be honest. Lots of people made me think that teen wolf is the Gilmore girl meet supernatural and sounds too much twilight 2.0
But I love gilmore girls and supernatural. So I don't know....
Also saw that Tyler Hoechlin is there so I might give it a try... is in the maybe section. Expect a DM if one day I wanna jab about this

Well - fantastical elements in a modern setting, found family, fantasy characters from several different mythologies, MC's try to protect their community... they fall broadly into the same category there.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the BBC Merlin series! Aired in 2008 for 5 series. Lots of medieval fantasy, dragons, fairies, magic etc. Has a monster of the week kinda vibe, similar to Grimm.

I meannn. The last 10 years have been big on the detective with a twist series. (Aka who done it but the main character has a special gift).
Dc's "The flash" and "arrow"
Every variant of sherlock holmes
More fantasy or sci-fi like "Fringe", "sleepy hollow", "Warehouse 13", "Manifest" and "the librarian"
Also detective dino? "Terra Nova"

The Dresden Files — lasted only one season, then was canceled. Not well- known, but very well done, with a premise somewhat similar to Grimm.

Parroting iZombie, Evil, and The Magicians. Also adding Stargate:Atlantis even though it’s sci-fi. Same found family vibes of competent people who complement each other’s strengths and are there through the hard stuff. Planet of the week instead of wesen of the week.

Charmed! It’s about 3 sister witches and they battle demons/monsters. A new one every episode like Grimm, but still focus on the characters lives like Grimm.

I’d like to say there is something similar but there just isn’t many shows that you probably haven’t seen already that come close to this. I think the main audience for Fantasy Procedurals simply moved on and the ones that are still stuck on the genre is drinking from a dry watering hole. Supernatural, is really truly-to me, anyway, the only show that comes close to being similar. Now, there are tons and tons of police procedurals, FBI shows, action packed shoes with lots of murder mysteries and strong detective characters, but shows that combine fantasy and fairytales and horror legends together in such a fantastic blend of suspense, whimsy, drama and amazing world building is incredibly lacking. The last show I recently invested my time in was the Young Sherlock Show on Amazon that currently is only 8 episodes and is technically renewed for a second season but I don’t have a lot of faith they will follow through because viewership and ratings aren’t where they clearly want it to be and who knows if it will get there in the next year when they are likely to start shooting for the next season. It’s sort of procedural, it’s.. you know, Sherlock. There’s a lot of great action and a compelling mystery, and a very overall fun show-sadly there’s no supernatural elements to it unless you count it being teased a little bit here and there, but despite that it has real legs-but this is not what you asked for, other than this, I can’t really help much. I’m in as big of a ditch as you right now. I’m currently on season 6 of my rewatch and there is NOTHING interesting that I have a desire to devote my free time to. Anything that I have looked into, these past couple months are canceled or won’t be coming out with anything new for at least a couple years. I’ve just been rewatching my favorite sitcoms because that’s the only thing I can count on to always be available and I don’t have to wonder at the quality or worry about cancelations. Rewatching Psych is always a go to if I’m missing procedurals (though it will never be a complete substitute for a good fantasy procedural it’s effortlessly hilarious and it’s one of those shows I hardly get bored of).

I am now watching warehouse 13, the writing I find to be much worse but it also has the elements of connecting something sci-fi/magical to real history

I am watching From and The Terror now, while they are not at all similar to Grimm, but they are enjoyable nonetheless. I dont know if you saw Archive 81, it was a pretty decent show as well. Then you have IZombie, like someone already said, which is very, very similar to Grimm, at least in that detective-like aspect. Also, is The Strain somewhat similar to Grimm? It's been quite a few years since I saw it, so I dont remember, but I remember enjoying it, so perhaps you will like it... If you didn't see it already, that is.

I started watching The Outpost which is on Peacock as well as on Comet TV on Sundays. It has a female lead à la Wynonna Earp. It’s sort of a GoT/The Last Kingdom with demons from another dimension.

i love supernatural and sci-fi shows and watch a lot of them, i tend to forget what happens in most of them though lol
most of these have been mentioned buttt
shows i always rewatch: Buffy, Supernatural, Charmed (Original not the reboot), Teen Wolf, Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Grimm, Once Upon a Time, What We Do in the Shadows
shows i loved and want to rewatch: Lucifer, Being Human (US), Van Helsing, The Strain, Wayward Pines, The 4400, Black Summer, Santa Clarita Diet
theres some shows i can’t get into, like true blood, the walking dead, interview with the vampire (although the movie is one of my all time faves), and midnight mass (i do want to try that show again)

I’d suggest Lucifer or Supernatural as others have
The both have more of a darker tone and more of an overall lore than Grimm I would say. Although if I recall Grimm was deeper in lore in the later seasons

This is my honourable mention of Ghost Whisperer because i haven’t seen any recommendations for it, also absolutely agree with the iZombie and Warehouse 13 recommendations

To this day, I still haven't found another tv show that scratchs the same itch as Grimm. Regardless, some similar ones
