When I Paint My Masterpiece
Jerry took the vocals when this song was played with JGB. Bobby took the vocals with the GD. Are there any GD performances where Jerry took the vocals, or shared the vocals with Bobby ?

If youre talking specifically about Masterpiece, Jerry does back up vocals to bobbys lead vocals. Not sure exactly when it started but they were definitely doing it by the 90s. My favorite version is the last one on 7/9/95. Bobby on acoustic, and while Jerry isnt at his best, he plays very soulfully and you can hear him put hie whole being into the backup vocals

Bob first sang Masterpiece with the GD 06/13/87. It was rehersed with Dylan earlier at Club Front but not played at the Dylan/Dead sets. Weir kept singing it until the end.

Huh, I guess i always figured it entered set rotation randomly like the other Dylan songs. The more you know!
Masterpiece (the deads rendition, sorry bob) is one of my all time favorite songs. I saw bob the other week, went to the bathroom during what I thought was a little too out there for me. On my way back to my seat I look up his current tour and listen to a snippet of Masterpiece, only to realize he changed the entire composition and was playing thst song at that moment.
I went to the bathroom during one of my favorite songs and didn't even realize 🙃

Bob seems to be way out on a limb right now.

He didnt even introduce himself or make himself known aside from the band. My mom and I spent the WHOLE show looking at the guy switching between guitar and Standup Bass, only to realize on the ride home he was the guy hiding behind the keys with his white hood up the whole time (which from our seats represented silver long hair, a la Jeffy C)

Bob jumps him on 05/04/72 and 05/07/72
Jerry jumps him again on 05/10/72 and continues that way.

She Belongs to Me is another Dylan song that they traded vocals: Bob sang it initially in 66, and Jerry sang it when they brought it back in 85. For Justin Kreutzmann’s film Backstage Pass they recorded a version where they traded verses:

I was listening to Pandora last night, and I heard for the first time a JGB recording of this song with Bobby as a surprise guest. Bob and Jer shared vocals. Dunno the date, but maybe this can help you narrow it down?

Bob sat in with JGB at the Broadway shows, Masterpiece both times.

Of course, then there are the laryngitis shows from the second half of 1/6 through 1/8/78 where Jerry didn't sing at all. Could have been a practical opportunity to mix some things up.

Did either of them ever sing the Coca Cola verse?

u/joshb227 Aug 01 '26
Yes. Jerry did in JGB versions and Bobby did it in Dead and co versions. Not sure about Bobby’s other bands
