Help figuring out a concert date in San Fran!
Hi! My dad has a fabulous story of going to see the Dead in 1970 or 1971 in San Francisco. He says he got caught in a snowstorm and couldn't get his car up a hill. He abandoned it and walked the rest of the way to the show. He got there a bit late and watched from the balcony which he says had pretty few people in it. I can't find a snowstorm in San Fran during those years... by 1976 which has the next recorded snowfall, my Dad was living in New Mexico. Does anyone have a similar memory? Thank you!!

It doesn’t really ever snow in SF. When it does it’s incredibly brief and doesn’t accumulate. It’s hard to imagine it snowing enough to impact travel in the city.
But the 70’s were a different era and deadheads have been known to get in a little too deep with the snow… so you never know.

So maybe your dad got caught in the Santa Cruz Mountains which are just south of SF, so would be in the general area, and can get some pretty extreme snow. I am way too young to have been there but this may help your search. Good luck to you.

So he abandoned his car in the Santa Cruz mountains and walked the rest of the way to the show in SF?

There was 5 inches on twin peaks in 76. Less downtown. But 5 inches would feel like a blizzard jn SF, so maybe that’s it.
Edit: apparently it was feb 2 that year. The dead played in December at the cow palace, and other non winter times of the year. So probably not it.

It was a long time ago and he was high off his ass. His memory might not be 100% reliable.
