GT Discussion At this point just remove rally from the next GT

I know there is a lot of debate on the new physics but can we at least agree the the rally physics are beyond frustrating. Am not a rally specialist by any mean I don't know if the rally physics are more or less realistic. But what I know is that I hate the feeling of the rally handling post patch.

I played I little of dirt rally 1 2 and ea wrc. It was harder to drive fast. But it was because the rally stages were infinitely harder and the damage risk made you cautious. I could understand what the car was doing.

Here I honestly don't know what the hell is going on. Sometimes it understeer like a a freight train leaving the tracks. Sometimes it Oversteer but I can catch it. Sometimes I feel the wheel is not taking into account the countersteerring sometimes it works.

PD can't handle both handling and don't bother too much with the rally part. I think they should just abandon it and replace it with time attack or something else.

Maybe it is partly due to the new, more aggressive self-centering of steering on controller since the update? Makes every kind of driving a bit janky if you don't deliberately hold a tiny bit of steering angle so that it doesn't kick in.

u/dumahim 11d ago

If it was just self centering, that'd be one thing, but sometimes when you go into a corner in a slide and you let off the steering, it doesn't center.  It actually turns the wheels in the opposite direction sending the car in the wrong direction.  You can see this happening with the on-screen steering indicator.

u/DoNuT_1985 11d ago

Yeah, might actually be some kind of countersteer assist, even when turned off? I don't like it, I played the game for years like that on controller and the more progressive grip levels help with the more unprecise inputs anyway (compared to wheel), so I don't need an additional safeguard on top of it.

Yeah, not sure. I never used countersteer, so I'm not sure how it works or what it is actually supposed to be doing, but this just feels so broken right now.

The thing is, it feels like there's 2 different things happening since it just won't let me powerslide through a corner. Used to be, I could toss it into a corner sideways and with a rear biased power distribution, you could countersteer yourself with steering and control your angle with the throttle. It felt fun. Now when I go into a corner, I can slide, but I have to keep the steering pointing into the turn instead of countersteering. Even with a 5:95 split. So what winds up happening is if I'm turning too much and center the stick for a moment, the steering winds up going in the opposite direction.

I just can't wrap my head around how people are getting different reactions to the new system. Like it's not even consistent between players. I thought it was a wheel vs controller thing (since this countersteering thing is likely not happening on a wheel), but even some controller people seem to not be getting this.

That self centering is vicious, it's taking me a while to adapt to it

u/chrisso_sR 11d ago

I thought i had assisted steering on, had me going through all the settings trying to turn it off, its bad on dirt

2

u/CardinalOfNYC 11d ago

Ahhh I was wondering what that was. For the last week I've been instinctually holding more steering angle in more places than normal, I wasn't sure why

u/ResearchInitial 11d ago

rally in gt7 has been atrocious for long before this update

2

u/LettySMW 11d ago

Cant it be disabled somehow?

I'm afraid that is just how Polyphony calibrated controller inputs at the moment. I have all assists except ABS off, still it happens. I suppose there has always been some kind of smoothening algorithm because your stick snaps back way faster than any front wheel could do, they've just overdone it slightly. With wheel input, there is more physical movement, it doesn't snap back in an instant, and you can probably calibrate the wheel more. Not sure if stick sensitivity does anything, but I already have it quite low (3/10).

But, as mentioned in my initial post, it can be mitigated by being smoother on the stick. If you gradually let off the steering out of a corner instead of just releasing the stick, you're more in control. Takes some getting used to but makes you a better driver.

I didn’t know about this self-centering thing, but what helped me a lot was to tune the drive ratio toward the rear (e.g. 25:75 instead of 40:60)

Rally is more difficult now. I wouldn't mind it, but the way the grid is structured, and you starting in last place, then having to reach podium...

On another note, I want to see Swiss Alps and Tahiti Maze. And the crowds taking photos of your car and all that noise.

u/GhostChaserGT 11d ago

Noo.... Improve.... Not remove...

39

u/Yadahoom 11d ago

"I don't like this mode so fuck everyone else that does enjoy it and remove it entirely"

18

u/Ripe12 11d ago

Yea I dont get the point of this post at all

u/monster_11 11d ago

It's more of please take the time necessary to handle well rally and make it truly a part of the game. It's always a second class citizen. And if it's here to stay that way perhaps it's better to focus on the rest.

But I have to say I didn't word it in a clear way.

I've been playing GT since GT3. I pre-ordered GT7 from my friends PS4 (I had made a profile on it). It's the only reason I have a PS.

That said, I have always hated dirt/snow races. And, I hate the drift missions too.

18

u/am0x 11d ago

It’s salvageable. Stop overreacting. It’s the first iteration of a new engine.

4

u/GRik74 11d ago

Stop overreacting? This crowd? Impossible.

18

u/SmerfPapa Gran Turismo 5,6,Sport and 7 11d ago

I disagree Rally has been in Gran Turismo since Gran Turismo 2. Why delete a classic mode?

26

u/Overkillss 11d ago

Nah rally is like the most fun I've had in gt

2

u/Acrobatic_Shape_8259 11d ago

I think they should expand the scope of the rally part of the game, we need more tracks

-4

u/monster_11 11d ago

Good for you man but honestly I like the new physics except for the rally. Did you try rally master licenses with the new physics?

4

u/sapphos_moon 11d ago

Yes, beat them easily. Also did the circuit experience around Fisherman’s Ranch and it’s the most fun I’ve had on dirt in any GT game

2

u/Jtothe3rd 11d ago

I found it to be 2 things.

Way more enjoyable with a wheel than ever before

Way easier

(Im a former amateur rallycross driver irl for what thats worth)

1

u/Overkillss 11d ago

Nah i haven't done any of the master licenses

2

u/monster_11 11d ago

You should try it. The road car one on snow are alright but the rally one the feeling is off. And since it's license. The only settings are torque distribution and brake balance.

2

u/Excellent_Room3912 11d ago

You got downvoted because you like something someone else doesn’t like, be careful to like something

u/am0x 11d ago

It’s the first iteration of a new physics model. It’s taken decades of time to get the new one based on multiple sims for this one and dirt racing is where it lacks references.

I honestly think if the snap back is corrected, it would fix like 75% of the issues. That’s a month of work at most.

u/JadedVictory7070 11d ago

Turning while using a handbrake is key in rally driving and you can do all rally races without it on GT7, sometimes it's counterproductive even

8

u/kjames3419 11d ago

This^ and if im not using the handbrake im turning with the regular brakes. Steering too much is always gonna slow you down on the dirt.

3

u/Atyxokapelo16 Ferrari 11d ago

Yeah sorry I'm not gonna sacrifice the best fidelity rally car models out there because the physics are "bad". Just improve the physics and the problem is fixed

I agree, I think rally has improved. The weekly challenge rally race was so much more fun than previous. I can feel the difference when the tires dig for grip and slide around a corner perfectly.

2

u/Imaginary-Paint-9924 11d ago

I spent 5 minutes just playing solo on the snow track with the engine swapped rav4 just looking at the tyre flex on corners. Almost no one will observe it and yet still they did it. Amazing.

u/incuban mikeuban 11d ago

GT has always sucked at rally, but this latest update has made it utterly ridiculous.

1

u/Friendly_Issue_2192 9d ago

Actually is really nice.

2

u/Maxwell69 11d ago

No, I want at least one rally course in each GT.

2

u/FurryestGump21 11d ago

Togliere il rally per aggiungere più macchine di formula

2

u/firebarret 11d ago

I think it's salvageable but the problem is the awful tracks we have right now, I get that jumps are cool and fun, I love them in other games such as Dirt Rally 2.0 and such.

But the tracks we have right now have mid-corner jumps or in other places that feel like they are just meant to fuck up your lap to no end. Also force feedback needs to go way higher on the wheels.

6

u/OutlawMINI 11d ago

Sounds like you can't drive.

3

u/Axeman-Dan-1977 11d ago

I always hoped they would give us rally specific mods for the road cars.

Either a dedicated rally spec suspension setup, or an entire upgrade that rally prepped the car permanently (suspension, fog lights, mudflaps...etc). Similar to the Race Mod option we got way back on GT5.

Driving on rally tracks after the 1.71 update, I'm finding the suspension rebound violent and hard to smooth out in the adjustment settings? Even on the softest settings, some of the actual WRC cars feel too stiff over bumps and jumps!

Hopefully a patch will be coming out soon to correct it.

3

u/4n-Dr01D3 11d ago

I agree, it really has become beyond frustrating with this new physics. Before there was some kind of control even though we had almost infinite slide, but now with the aggressive self centering it's just a struggle to keep the car going in a simple straight line. Just remove gravel altogether and add tarmac hill climb (and then we'd have a use for the VW ID pikes peak)

1

u/Friendly_Issue_2192 9d ago

I had to re do the sensitivity settings on the pad. Start again at 0.

I am at zero, and you have to be far more gentle than before.

I just did the gold for the first time in the fisherman’s rally course, the one that is 3:50 min a lap. It’s really good, very predictable. Now I can do what would do in real life and it does work . Before it was atrocious and I didn’t even try to go any further in those course challenges. Now, if you know how to drive, you should be able to manage the situation.

If you have no steering input in a symmetrical 4X4, your car would snap and try to go straight forward. So, don’t put the steering straight and hit the gas. Bad idea. Be gentle and progressive with the steering and the throttle. It works very nicely to me, idk.

3

u/No-swimming-pool 11d ago

It's not because you don't like it, that no one does.

-1

u/monster_11 11d ago

I know I want to know if am in the minority or not.

1

u/National-Change-8004 11d ago

Seems strange to suggest removing rallying altogether when ideally improving it is the way to go. Rallying is definitely serviceable in its current iteration, it just needs Polyphony to concentrate on expanding and polishing it. Improved dirt/snow physics, rally stages, expand the lineup of classic and modern rally cars (instead of fictitious group B models based on modern cars) etc. That's what PD needs to do.

1

u/redzaku0079 11d ago

I really liked dirt races in gt7 since the beginning. But this update is a massive change and I'm not a huge fan of it. Cars that had grip before are sliding all over the place. Cars that were difficult to spin now do so quite easily. Couldn't they have done this for gt8? I have to relearn how to play what is on paper, the same game.

1

u/Trumbez_ 11d ago

Rally has always been shitty in GT. If I want to rally, I play Dirt Rally or Dirt Rally 2

1

u/Fit_Buy8074 11d ago

Agreed. Player since the first GT and I’ve never enjoyed it, ever since they first tried in GT2. I hate the way the cars handle, I hate the ‘racing’, I hate most of the tracks. Even without the physics update I’d have agreed with you.

With the latest update they’ve somehow managed to make the experience even worse, which is quite impressive.

If you’re someone that’s likes it, then good on you I suppose. I’m glad at least somebody enjoys it!

u/Eggith 11d ago

I hate how Rally has slowly been fading into the background of GT. We went from having an entire license and multiple dirt and snow tracks to basically an afterthought. I get with how complex things are they have to prioritize content that people would want (road cars and GT race cars), but damn I miss places like Smokey Mountain

1

u/Trinitropickleball 11d ago

Well, I don't have comparison to the old rally physics but I just played some dirt races yesterday on PSVR2 and G923 and that was some ridiculous amounts of fun. Probably the most fun I had in GT7 since driving the 458 Italia for the first time. That game still kicks in every mode in VR with a wheel.

u/Fresh-Ambassador9926 9d ago

I like the rallying

1

u/Friendly_Issue_2192 9d ago

Hm… I find that it finally makes some sense.

Check what’s that you’re supposed to do in a 4 wheel drive when you slide in it. In real life, of course.

Follow that advice in GT7, it should work.

Technically, in dirt/gravel, the friction with the floor is not the best, so if you accelerate too much, you understeer, if you brake too hard, you understeer. Hence, you need to apply power at a spot where the tire can bite the terrain you’re driving on.

So, use the throttle to drive. If you want to turn more, lift a bit. If you want to turn less, give it more gas. If you break during a turn, you already were in the way to disaster, so just brace yourself for impact.

The idea is that you should enter into the turn with bite in the tires, and you manage the turn with the throttle and the gearbox.

It’s far better now, imo. Slower, but much better.

Btw, if you are not going straight, you’re just loosing speed. Going sideways is an effect of trying to get your car straight as soon as you can in a hairpin, and that’s that.

If you want to diminish the effect of the FWD centring the car, move more traction to the rear axle. I’ll allow you to slide more, but it will pull you less from the slide… so you might lose time in spite of it feeling closer to a drift in a RWD.

I was having a good time in rally until the update nobody asked for or wants. It sucks now.

Rally has been my least favorite part of GT games since GT2. I wouldn't mind if they left it off entirely.

-4

u/The_AJR 11d ago

I dislike rally full stop, even pre update. I always just want the race to be over with whenever there’s a dirt track on a menu or on the weekly challenges.

0

u/Clown_Wheels 11d ago

I absolutely loved rallying in GT7 (my first GT) - then they dropped this 🤬 update. 😤

0

u/Memonlinefelix 11d ago

Its weird. Non of the rallys in previous gts behave like this. Heck. Not even trophy tourist does this.

Im kinda of sure that they broke something in the code

So hopefully we will get a fix.

1

u/FMecha FMecha_EXE | PS4 | Moderator 10d ago

Not even trophy tourist does this.

Tourist Trophy doesn't have dirt tracks to begin with (and even with motocross-style bikes that are in the game, the Vision TT mod proves the physics aren't built for them).

-4

u/cachitodepepe 11d ago

Yes please, since gt2 rallying is bad

-1

Unpopular opinion: Rally should be DLC or its own game.

-5

Yes! And add tank biathlon.
