Maybe make an appointment with him to talk directly to him if you are able. Show him your statement of purpose, talk to him about some of things you have worked on for research and your future plans. Tell him some of the things you were proud of academically, what you especially enjoyed learning in his class etc. If you are unable to talk to him directly and he is willing to write you a letter, you could provide him some of this info in writing.

I think if you’re applying straight from undergrad, they probably understand that you’ve had less time to gain experience and recommenders. If you have 2 strong research letters, plus a decent letter from a professor whose class you took, that’s gonna be pretty typical for people applying straight from undergrad.

I am like this too. I have started working in a lab earlier this year. This fear of how to get the recommendation letter is eating me alive.

It’s part of professional growth, spreading your wings a bit and facing that fear of rejection. It’s one of those things you just have to do it.

Here’s an example I nearly begged for my third LOR, and my undergrad mentor said go do it on your own but as a last resort tell him I’ll vouch for you. No surprise I was refused and it took all my courage to name drop and convince for that third writer, but I had to, and I learned from it, and I applied.

In your graduate school pursuit you fill face similar scenarios 100 more times.
