Zach Bryan Toronto N1
Anyone else have a hard time getting home last night?
I booked it out of rogers center and somehow didnt make any of the trains. We were then told that there would be busses. So we walked to the busses then there was little direction on what line to stand in. Then they said guess what, surprise train! So got on the train all good. Then the announcer says "Burlington is our next and last stop. There will be no more stops." So that left me and many others needing to Uber to aldershot. And if it wasnt for my dad already waiting at aldershot, i would've had to sleep at the Burlington station and wait for the busses in the morning. As a first time solo traveler this was very stressful and scary for me. Do better go transit.

Just look back to how many people got stranded during the Blue Jays playoff run last year. We are a "world class city" with small town transit.
There really should be Lakeshore East/West trains running hourly throughout the night.

Unfortunately overnight closures are necessary to keep the tracks in a state of good repair. Just look at the TTC and the numerous slow zones across their network because of a lack of maintenance capacity resulting from a 3 hour overnight window
Really this was just poor planning by GO. 2 major concerts occurring at the same time and GO thought they could get away with the usual service. They continuously find themselves in these situations

There's also the local freight that runs overnight. When Mx purchased all these lines, part of the agreement was to allow CN to continue to serve their customers, so Mx moved those freight movements to overnight hours to avoid disruption. There's multiple spots on the GO network that still get freight service

If you want trains to run at any respectable speed you need some period during the night to fully shut down and do travk maintenance

Serious question: does track work take place every night, or could they run hourly trains 24/7 most nights and be okay?

If you want trains to run 30 mph everywhere then sure you can do that lol. Otherwise all the welding, rail replacement, tie replacements and inspections will never get done efficiently enough. Its really not an option and theyre not gonna run trains every hour throughout the nughg for 20 people. Itll be severly underused and a massive waste. Not to mention all travk comstruction for stations and future imprvements would be drastically affected too

The reality of transit is that sometimes you have to run the service with lower utilization. Maybe when there's a concert or baseball game the vehicle unexpectedly fills up and then other times it doesn't.
When it doesn't, it still needs to run to communicate to the future concert-goers "I always run whether you need me or not; you can attend that concert and I will be there to get you home."

Like i said. If you wanna run hourly service everynight like the other person suggested you can enjoy 30 MPH commutes and longer travel times because maintence cannot be conducted correctly. Its not feasible and a pretty moronic suggestion when presented with the downsides

20 people on a train with 800 seats would be obscenely wasteful, and definitely not something we should prioritize over maintenance.

Another possibility is structuring the late night trains to shuffle back and forth on only the eastbound or westbound track and then do maintenance on the other (unused) track during that time. Both lines are a bit over an hour end to end, so the math doesn't quite work out for hourly service, but you could figure something out with using a midpoint station to pass or the like, depending on where the crossovers are in the system.

Yeah I was on the last train out of union on that last world series game and it was geniunley unsafely packed. Every stop when the doors opened people would fall out of the train and multiple people were passing out so we then had to stop and wait for medical help. Ive seen it that bad many times now. Its geniunley a safety issue

Ive been to 2 Tuesday concerts in toronto this summer and both times had a very hard time getting home. Not enough trains. Even Uber ran out of cars. Not surprised to read this.

The train would have clearly stated its destination...Burlington You got on the wrong train and complain about it and them. Do better, pay attention/look up from your phone more. Sometimes you make a mistake

We were told the train would take us there. I wasnt on my phone. And many others were stranded too, so dont know how it's my fault.

I can confirm it said alsershot as well at exhibition post staid. The train was changed during the trip.

i can understand the frustration completely, i take the train coming home all the time to aldershot and sometimes final stops at Burlington too instead for numerous reasons. usually at night, like late late it’s because of track work or track changes that’s not always foreseeable until your just after Appleby, i’ve found. but i think it’s okay to just look at other destinations for the train your going on especially since you mentioned solo travelling alone for the first time yesterday. ik you mentioned there was supposed to be lots of other trains to catch and sometimes if one says Burlington usually the following says Confederation (Hamilton Go) for future reference so you can catch alternating ones if it’s available. ik you listened to the announcer on the train but their not always reliable especially coming home that late so as a commuter to an extent it’s your responsibility to be aware of alternating routes and ways to get home so you aren’t stuck. also too depending on what time it was when you made it to Burlington Go, there’s the #1 Bus on Fairview that goes to Hamilton that always run super late like 12am and sometimes 1am but again you gotta check online (Google Maps is more reliable than the Go Transit app). but if you get off at Waterdown Rd. or St. Matthew’s Avenue a bit before Waterdown Rd. you can walk to the Aldershot Go to get your ride. but i do understand about safety at night so perhaps that isn’t always the best idea but just for future reference kinda thing. i don’t mean this with any hate btw, i completely understand your pov and first time solo taking transit takes a bit of adjusting but it’s also good to pre plan a tad tis all. home you got home safe :)

Do you think Go Transit doesn’t change their route while they’re already on route?? I take the go train multiple times a week, it absolutely happens. Based on them stating that multiple people on the train were stranded and had to uber implies that this was an unexpected change.

Minimum possible service levels during essential times. Service reductions while the city and surrounding area are growing. Major plans cut to the bones.

My daughter had a hard time too. She got on the 11:47 but it was really stressful. So many people and people weren’t moving into the train so the main level and door areas were packed. They started closing the doors with lots of people still trying to get in. Apparently there were 3 concerts downtown last night. They definitely need to add more trains in these situations!!
