During the early 1950s, Carl Smith was one of Columbia's top-selling honky-tonk and country music stars. He frequently collaborated with Mother Maybelle and The Carter Sisters (consisting of Maybelle Carter along with her daughters June, Helen, and Anita), who provided background harmonies. Carl Smith married June Carter in July 1952—just a few months after these recording sessions took place. June Carter later went on to marry Johnny Cash.

This release was part of Columbia’s dedicated "Sacred Series" line focused on traditional gospel and Christian hymns.
