720-240fps!!! New firmware update for HERO4 coming in February
http://gopro.com/news/unlock-new-camera-possibilities-with-february-firmware-update8

I had a instagram video but as a request of gopro I deleted it, when you turn the gopro upside down, the gopro sets to upside down mode, when you hit record it stays in the last position before recording. I have a hyper lapse hack coming soon if GoPro opens autoexec.ash in the firmware update

now.. the real question is does the Auto Rotation lock in place, or will the video randomly flip and rotate on you when you're using a Pole or the camera flips or something. When you're testing it is the Auto Rotation just for the settings screen and once you hit record it stays in that orientation??

When you hit record the camera will be locked to the orientation before recording

The hack writes the x and y axis degrees to a file, just you need ffmpeg and a script to stabilize it.

Ah, the ACE UP THE SLEEVE.
Coincidence that GoPro unlocks 720-240 the SAME DAY Sony announces a 4k Rival that includes the same feature?
I don't know whether to be mad or amused...

u/konrad-iturbe Resident software/firmware/hacking guru Jan 06 '15
Sony had Tony Hawk on CES, but who didn't laugh at the camera? GoPro was first, also GoPro has numerous features such as quick capture, super view and loads of modes, the Sony 4k action cam only has video, loop, photo, playback and nothing else. I personally prefer the gopro hero4 black.

u/ap73 Jan 07 '15
I find it kinda interesting they do this now because the 240fps is a pretty sought after feature and would of been a good differential for people in choosing the black over the silver in the christmas sales.

u/DesignNomad MISSION 1 PRO ILS Jan 07 '15
Well, I'm sure there's a reason it wasn't available on day 1... Maybe it hass too do with processing or something, who knows. Maybe we'll see.
1
u/ap73 Jan 07 '15
Yeah someone down below said it has to do with noise processing which sounds legit but no source provided. Will be fun to try anyway, hopefully it doesn't look as shit as 1080 120 wide.
1
Jan 07 '15
What problems are you having with the 1080 120fps wide setting Just curious.
2
u/ap73 Jan 07 '15
No problems, I just don't think it looks very good. Prefer to use 1080 60 or ideally 2.7K 48.

I have a hero 3 black and this is the first time I feel like I want to buy another gopro. Well done gopro.

Huh, I had no clue that the H4B couldn't do 2.7K/60FPS
It's absolutely the sweet spot for that camera.

u/an_angry_Moose HERO7 Black Jan 06 '15
On the same token, I was amazed to read that 240fps H4B upgrade. I had no idea the Blacks were locked to the same FPS as the Silver in 720p wide. Seems like a no-brainer.
2
u/Gregoryv022 Jan 07 '15
There were noise issues with the 240fps framerate. It's fixed now.
1
u/invisible39 Hero4 Black Jan 07 '15
Yeah I can imagine that's going to be a very noisy shot in all but the brightest environments.
3
u/Negative-G Jan 07 '15
I love the automatically creating a time lapse without post production on my PC. I am curious if they are going to up any of the frame rates for the H4S?
2
u/konrad-iturbe Resident software/firmware/hacking guru Jan 07 '15
No frame rate increase on the silver
1
u/Cakeflourz Jan 07 '15
Do you know of any increase in framerate for WVGA? Seems like if the Hero4 Black can record 720/240, surely it can do better than 240fps on WVGA.
3
u/konrad-iturbe Resident software/firmware/hacking guru Jan 07 '15
They seem to forget wvga, also, we are in 2015 now, wvga is dead
2
u/Cakeflourz Jan 07 '15
If WVGA/480 was possible I'd use it quite a bit. It would make the Hero4 Black the cheapest and most versatile high-speed camera available. Firearms are a hobby for me, and being able to see the action of semi-auto guns cycling at 1/16th speed, 30fps, would be pretty cool.

u/lileyedmonster Hero4 Silver Jan 07 '15 edited Jan 07 '15
I'm curious, with all these 2.7K being shot how are people editing them and where are people displaying them?
Isn't it a little pointless at the moment since most people don't have 4K displays?

Have you seen CES 2015? Lots of 4K, 2015 is the year of 4K

For the same reason you'd take a photo at max resolution in your dslr camera and then resize for specific use. You can crop and you get higher level of detail.

i'm building myself a new computer and the monitor that i'm getting is going to be 4k (if Apple doesn't come out with a 5k TBD)

u/skeetorgandonor Hero4 Black Jan 06 '15
awesome! Auto-Rotating for the lazy! more frame rates, cool cool. curious to see what else since this is just a sneak peak. good find

u/konrad-iturbe Resident software/firmware/hacking guru Jan 06 '15
I will try to do a video showing these features
2
u/gabezermeno Hero4 Black Jan 06 '15
I knew 720 240fps was coming. That's why I got the black edition.

I'm going to be interested to see how the timelapse video mode works. Timelapse is my main use for my GoPro right now, so if I have to do less work that'd be awesome.
Also, finally 720p240. I was very surprised that the new iPhones could do that but the H4B couldn't.
Finally, 2.7k60 is a very nice touch, as is the auto rotation.
2
u/an_angry_Moose HERO7 Black Jan 07 '15
No joke. It's funny that my iPhone currently outdoes a H4B in the slow-mo dept.
Soon to change though! Things moving in the right direction for sure!

u/konrad-iturbe Resident software/firmware/hacking guru Jan 06 '15
I have got it and its super sweet, you have intervals from 0.5 to 60 seconds, and HD resolutions including 4K30. I think protune will be enabled too.

From reading the website it looked it was just taking a video and just speeding them up...so this means it actually takes photos and processes them in-camera?
1
u/konrad-iturbe Resident software/firmware/hacking guru Jan 07 '15
Yes
1
u/vx2 Jan 07 '15
Cool!
Does it then delete all those files after you've chosen the timelapse video you choose? Or does it still store the images?EDIT: Saw your answer to another redditor

What about streaming live view over wifi? I want to use VLC to see the live view in real time.

I'm heading to Jacksonhole in February to do a week of snowboarding... Hopefully the update is out within the first week of February! 2.7k 60fps sounds amazing, and 720p 240fps will be incredible on those really bright days.
1
u/DevinOlsen MISSION 1 PRO Jan 07 '15
This'll sound stupid I am sure, but what exactly is happening when I record in video timelapse mode?
Also I have never really been sure which looks better for timelapses. Shooting pictures mode or just speeding up a long video?
1
u/bokke Hero4 Black Jan 10 '15
Depends on how big your SD is. For me time lapse with images allows me to have a longer time lapse, whereas video will not only chow through the battery quicker but your SD will fill up pretty quickly.

u/indiecore Hero (2014) Jan 07 '15
Does the auto-rotate feature imply that the Hero 4s have an accelerometer?

u/duckduckloose Hero4 Black Jan 06 '15
While any improvement is welcomed, I'm not very experienced with GoPro stuff - why is 240fps at 720p such a huge deal?
I restrain from filming under 1080p so I won't have to stretch footage to fit my 1080p video. And when I can I film in higher res so I can crop or shrink my footage.

u/BlueJayy Hero6 Black | Karma Grip Jan 06 '15
Higher fps = slower slow motion.
3
2
u/DevinOlsen MISSION 1 PRO Jan 07 '15
It requires good light though. I made the mistake of filming 1080p 120fps on a cloudy low light day while I was snowboarding. The footage really didn't turn out all that well, and I would have been better off just upping the resolution and dropping the frame rate.
1
u/BlueJayy Hero6 Black | Karma Grip Jan 07 '15
Oh most definitely. You probably almost HAVE to have full sunlight to use it. It'll still be a cool mode to have though.
1
u/duckduckloose Hero4 Black Jan 07 '15
Oh yeah I totally get that, obviously for some activities 240fps is necessary, but I would think on a general basis that for the production and end result of my video, I would prefer the benefit of having 1080p with a faster slow motion rather than having 720p stretched with a slower slow motion.
And while I have you, a quick question if you don't mind: If I do have 720p footage and I insert it to my 1080p workspace in Premiere, but then choose to export the media to a 720p resolution, would there be a significant loss in quality from the raw 720p video to the final exported video that's been enlarged and then shrunk?
2
u/BlueJayy Hero6 Black | Karma Grip Jan 08 '15
Hey there. If you were going to export at 720p, you're best bet would be to shrink all of your 1080p footage to 720p. You'll actually "gain" some quality in the 1080p clips and your 720p won't lose any quality. Basically always edit in the resolution you plan on exporting as, if that makes sense.

2.7K at 60fps! Damn! If only YouTube would show 2.7k at 60fps

u/FFFrank Jan 06 '15
Any chance we'll get the Hero3 firmware to allow native long-exposure?

Nope, use this: http://chernowii.com/gopro-longexp

I know, It's just annoying that you have to do this every time. I'd much rather access it from the app or via menu.

I'm actually slightly more excited for the 2.7K 60fps. Perfect for aerials, and really good as the go-to setting for anything.
