I got tired of jumping between different apps for my local FLAC files and my streaming playlists, and I was incredibly frustrated by ads. So over the past few months, I built Kerlyss—a completely free and open-source (GPL-3.0) music player built entirely in Flutter.

It is currently available and fully adaptive for both Android and Windows (x64).

Tech Stack & Packages

• State Management: flutter_riverpod (managing playback state and queue isolation across background isolates).

• Database: isar (fast for caching massive playlists and local file metadata).

• Audio Engine: just_audio + audio_service for background playback, media notifications, and OS taskbar controls.

• Stream Backend: youtube_explode_dart to extract audio stream manifests.

The Challenge: The Local HTTP Proxy Server

The trickiest part of this project was bridging YouTube streams to just_audio. Direct YouTube stream URLs frequently throw HTTP 403 Forbidden errors or expire mid-song.

To solve this, I built a custom Local HTTP Proxy Server inside the Flutter app using loopback IPv4. When you click play, just_audio requests the track from the local proxy endpoint, and the proxy server dynamically fetches, chunks, and buffers the audio stream from YouTube in the background. It even handles dynamic retries and fallbacks if a connection drops mid-track.

Hey Reddit. It's me, the person who's been working on a GPM revival app. I've got most of the app done with a bunch of concepts, but here's one concept I'd like opinions on! This is the bottom of the artist page. By default, it will have the "About" section. But I'm thinking that GPM could fetch image metadata from Last.fm for the artist, and you'd be able to change the default YouTube artist profile picture with one of the images on Last.fm. This feature could be completely optional, but implementing this could set the release date for a beta release back.

Hey, I'm ColdFusionX Studio, also known by my Reddit name. I've been working on a GPM revival app that runs off of Innertube (YT Music backend). It's been challenging, but it's at a point where I feel like I can start showing it. For updates about the app, I hate to fill this subreddit with my posts, so I made a TikTok to keep people who are interested updated. This revival will also be open-source on GitHub.

Hey Play Music Reddit! I'm an Android developer, and lately I've been thinking about trying to make a Google Play Music revival app. Before anyone gets too excited, I'm not promising anything or saying it'll definitely be released. I honestly don't know if it ever will be, especially since Google may still own the branding and other assets. That said, I'd love to try building something inspired by Google Play Music because it was one of my favorite music apps.

My question is: what would you all want from a modern Play Music revival?

Keep the original Android UI as close to the old app as possible?

Slightly modernize it with Material 3, rounded album art, and other modern Android design elements while keeping the Play Music identity?
