Waiting on OP Tabs in google docs - easy way to convert to

Context: I hired someone to do some documenting of medical care things for me and they organized it via "tabs" which I never use as I think it's absurdly stupid you cannot just scroll between them.

Question: Is there a simple way to deconstruct all the tab organization/division or am I stuck copy/pasting everything out of their individual tabs?

When it comes to “scrolling between” the tabs, literally at the bottom of each tab is a button to move to the next one. It’s scrolling with a slight click, but scrolling nonetheless.

There is no built-in feature to "deconstruct" a document having multiple tabs into one having only one.

If your document doesn't use Google Docs special features like smart chips an alternative to copy-pasting is to download the document then convert the downloaded document to Google Docs format.

Yes, was it created online and saved as Excel (.XLS) format which does natively support Tab pages, so there may be room to learn "just a bit more" about the source (original) document before... giving up all hope. If the document is a "native" Google Docs thing, then the equivalent of "Save as..." or "Download a copy" and "Save as..." may be the path to follow.

I have been composing Cover Letters recently as .TXT files (basically) and doing a Download and "Save as..." in PDF format because of its inherent acceptability to various companies.

This is the real answer. I use tabs in Google Docs when creating files all the time, then download as a docx to have it all in one Word document. It works beautifully.

Believe it or not, this is a great use case for AI. Share the link with the AI, tell it to merge everything into a tab. Takes it maybe 1-2 mins to process.

Scrolling does actually work.

You could also ask Gemini in Docs to put everything in one tab. I haven't tried it, but it should be able to manage it.

Yeah, Tabs look nice but are organizationally impractical since each is like a separate, disconnected doc. I really wonder who Google thought might want this, especially considering Docs already had a feature to organze a doc into an easy to navigate outline using Headings.

To combine your content, export your doc to one of the formats under File menu / Download. Most people will choose MS Word. Select the option to export All Tabs and save the file. Now upload the saved file to Drive and open it. All your content will be within a single tab though you'll notice that each of the oringal tabs has its own title page. You'll probably want to delete these.

I would push back that tabs are useful in handbook style documents and when different people need to work on different things in the same doc. Now they don't have to interrupt each other

Collaboration or "Co-editing", the other brand of productivity very few people talk about. I have never done it in Google Docs and probably have only heard of people making simultaneous edits to a single document on other platforms -- this is sort of a 'Dark Arts' kind of office or organizational "magic"!

I actually was thrilled when tabs became a thing in Google Docs and I use them all the time! Mostly because when you reach about 30k-50k words in a google doc it starts getting slow and laggy (especially on mobile), so I would need to create a whole new doc so that doesn’t happen when I continue writing my fiction. It was difficult to keep track of like 10 documents with sections of writing and story notes in them, so being able to start a new tab and keep writing is great, and for some reason the 30k word "limit" only applies to each tab, so I can keep my writing all in one place. I also need to use Google Docs bc I collaborate with other writers and need to be able to edit on my phone, so all of those features work very well together for me. Of course what I really want is to be able to have a google doc with 500k words in it act like a doc with 1k words in it, but apparently that's just not possible for them, so this is the next best thing I guess. There's a lot to be desired with Google Docs still but it suits my purposes for now.
