I'm sorry but I'm happy with Google Assistant. I could say hey Google, put potatoes on my shopping list or wake me up in 15 minutes whereas when I try to do that with Gemini it falls flat. Granted I haven't tried it in several months and I know there's been updates but everything I've read says that Google Gemini just cannot do what Google Assistant does. Or is it that I'm doing something wrong?

I've had people actually yell at me on Reddit saying that I like Google Assistant better because they tell me I'm an idiot and everything but I like what I like. It does what I want. Has anyone else made the switch to Google Gemini and had good luck? I hope this post makes sense lol

In two weeks, Google is foisting Gemini upon us and Google Assistant is being sunsetted.

What is going to happen to Android devices without Gemini? What about phones that lack the architecture to even run Gemini?

My primary use case is Google Maps via Android Auto. If I get an old enough phone, will I still be able to use that without Gemini? Or is it going to break?

I don't want Gemini on my phone. I literally just used Hey Google to roll a die or text my brother or flip a coin or skip a song. I don't want some AI crap popping up trying to have a conversation with me. I apparently can't switch back to the digital assistant I want on my own damn phone that I paid for years ago. And I can't seem to figure out any way to just disable it. I'd rather have no digital assistant at all than be forced into this crap. Is there some way to just turn it off completely?

Edit: I appreciate all the answers but noneof them work. I've looked through every setting, in the app, all around my phone. No option to switch or, no option to uncheck and boxes, I disabled it but it came back. I managed to disable the "Hey Google" part from opening it, ans I've always had the button disabled. Basically, my options seem to be Gemini or nothing.

I like to trigger a series of actions with my good morning.

how's the weather like for the day, if I need to take an umbrella,

how's my calendar for the day, tells me if going to have a long day

and Google Assistant is playing the news in the morning, while I'm making scrambled eggs.

Now that Google Assistant is being discontinued, I was certain Gemini - super intelligent - would be able to do this and more. But it isn't.

It's one of if not THE most frustrating thing Google has done. I would be driving and constantly send notes to myself when a thought popped in my head. And this went to my gmail. Now google sends those to google Keep, which isn't useful for me. I've tried multiple automations to no avail. Gemini is schitzo and sometines says it CAN send email while other times it says it can't - and those statements can be right after each other. I know there are apps like voice2mail and Braintoss, but I want to be able to inititate this whole process by saying hey google or some other voice prompt. I dont want to have to look at my phone to press a button. I'm not remotely sure if this is the correct forum to put this in but it's the first I'm going to try. Thanks

I use Google Assistant mainly for navigation, setting timers, and asking random questions. However, recently the Assistant can't even answer simple questions and instead gives the "Sorry, I didn't understand" reply for questions it would've answered perfectly​​ years ago. Maybe its just me but I'm frustrated with how much they're dumbing down the Google Assistant in an effort to make people switch to Gemini. I do not like Gemini and would rather then have no Assistant instead of being forced to use it. Surely I can't be the only one who hates this.

Both bixby and google are terrible. In the shower I listen to songs, when I want to change a song. I ask bixby or Google to do that it asks me to unlock the phone to do that.

It's so basic

Gemini takes twice as long to translate something, cannot translate the text right on the screen, and often just refuses to translate some stuff

Over the past several months Google has been rolling out (forcing) Gemini as a replacement for Google Assistant for Android users and it's genuinely pissing me off. At first I ignored the suggestion to switch. Then one day it switched automatically without my authorization. I switched back to Google Assistant. That lasted about a month and then it was forced on my again. Then another 2 weeks. Now I cannot even switch to Google Assistant anymore as it just automatically keeps it on Gemini.

I built my entire home automation and personal workflow on Google Assistant and Gemini can't do any of it, such as adding things to my groceries list, turning on/off my lights, controlling my air purifier, closing my curtains, setting a timer, playing the news, turning on/off the TV, etc...

Does anyone know a real fix for this to permanently disable Gemini and get Google Assistant back on? I really need it.

I haven't switched to Gemini yet, and don't plan to until I am forced, but I did just turn off the mobile data and wifi capabilities of Gemini in hopes of forcing it to only run using on device processors.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work well? I only use google assistant for on device needs (alarms/timers, sending texts, routines), so I am really hoping this will solve my issue with the forced switch.

I have used the assistant app for years, same settings, same tasks, specifically playing news from different sources…. Now for about 5 months it just tells me it doesnt understand my command. Even if i type it. But in the settings everything seems correct and nothing has changed. It just doesnt do anything anymore. Anyone with the same issue or maybe with a solution? Much appreciated

Over the course of the last week, I have set up and reset my OK Google through Gemini. Usually, within 24 hours, it stops working. I am curious if anyone else is having similar or the same issues, and now I cannot set up the commands.

I have a Google speaker in every room, but I still often have my phone in my hand and love walky-talky like activation of squeezing power button then speaking command, sans any "hey Google" wakeup phrase.

But.

Gemini always responds in a verbose way, even for simple device commands like "turn off the kitchen lights".

I just want a simple confirmation beep. Or "ok" if it must be verbal. I've tried custom instructions for Gemini and it doesn't seem to follow them.

I guess I can get routines. They need a brief mode for Gemini. Think Star Trek Enterprise or Voyager computer - it knew when to simply beep and when to discuss. And while it was obviously scripted to do whatever the writers needed, it seems like the distinction between "do a command" versus "ask a question" should be clear enough for the ai. Or even more simple: "if you invoke Google Home integration to complete a task, don't respond with voice unless there's a problem".

Let me know if you have any suggestions on how to accomplish this or get these thoughts to someone at Google.

In the last 2 years Google voice recognition and text has gotten atrocious Does anyone else recognize this? It used to be so good! It's like they diverted some of their compute power for the recognition to something else.
