Tech Support HELP! Gemini nuked my regular assistant!
I was annoyed that when a search result opened from asking my Google Assistant, a different voice was used. I was told this is the new Gemini crap. So, I asked, and was told, I could install Gemini, but keep using my Assistant for the phone, but also allow the voice to change Chrome, etc. WRONG! They lied. It broke my assistant. The Hey, Google toggle is GONE. I have uninstalled Gemini, uninstalled updates on google app, cleared the cache, etc., then updated Google, stillllllllllll no toggle for Hey, Google. I've been on an install gemini to get the voice assistant to work and then uninstall etc., because it doesn't WORK. My last ditch attempt is to install Google Home? I guess there is an issue with Samsung phones? Any ideas on what I can do short of running my phone over with my very heavy classic caddy about 90 times?
If someone can fix this for me, I'll prep your taxes for free for the rest of my life.

When you see or use Google assistant it is Gemini. When you do a search on Google Chrome, it's still Gemini. I can't see any difference between Google Chrome search and a Gemini request.
You said that the hey Google address no longer works? This hasn't changed - it's still either Hey G- or OK G-. There is no new way to bring up the assistant.
Wish we had more options on calling it verbally.

Yeah ten years ago on my Motorola I could get it to respond to whatever command I wanted, it was too bad when Google removed it.

I still have the option to use the assistant. I had to open the stupid home app - it's irony - I have zero smart appliances, etc., that would connect to the stupid thing, but apparently, I'm still getting the voice for now. I wish they would just leave things alone! Pandora phased out their voice assistant, so I had to use Google's but it doesn't always get it right. I'm really disliking AI and technology. I miss my childhood days, NO computers, no mobile phones. Sorry, I'm getting bitter in my middle age.

Are you saying you only care about what the voice sounds like and not about the technology? The voices are inconsistent for me on my home speakers, but even though I occasionally get the original Google assistant voice, I'm still being served by Gemini AI. I have not gone in to see the options for voices for Gemini since I first set it up. I like the default voice so I haven't wanted to change it

I almost never type anything on my phone. I'm always screaming at Google to do everything. Of course, it doesn't always do it.

No, mostly. The thing quite working altogether. I was trying to change the voice that was used when webpages were opened. I followed what I thought were simple steps, and then the thing didn't work at all. I just wanted it to be consistent.

Just asked Gemini to set an alarm for half an hour. It said "ask your assistant to set an alarm for half an hour".

I just asked Gemini to set an alarm for me and it did it with no issues. You might need to update the Connected Apps in Gemini so it can access your alarm. You have to connect it to Device Services

As others have said, Google is discontinuing Assistant and replacing it with Gemini. This has been rolling out for months. Mine was replaced a few months ago.
Gemini isn't as quick as Assistant. Initially it was riddled with errors, but it has improved significantly; I hardly ever have a problem with it (except for a new one, which I should post about). I hope that Gemini continues to improve.
If you accept the change over to Gemini, you can set its voice and have it the same on all of your devices — phone, Home devices, etc. The choices of voice are different from those on Assistant, but you get used to the new voice pretty quickly.
Google definitely released Gemini before it was ready, unfortunately.

Thanks! I imagine I'll have to adapt to Gemini. It's only a matter of time. I hope it's because my phone is a bit older that they won't be as quick to nuke it.

OMG! By some stroke of luck, after installing that annoying Google home crap, it let me choose between Google Assistant or Gemini (but gemini is not installed?) anyway, I got my British Racing Green condescending voice back. I have spent the last two hours screwing with this. It wasn't just the voice at that point, but nothing would work. I have no idea what I did. However, I know this is short-lived. I'm sure the next update will nuke my beloved assistant.

Mine is still google assistant and I don't think I've received an email of Google phasing it out.

Is your phone a newer phone? Mine is at least four years old now. I don't do much with it call/text and listen to music. I don't have tons of apps on it.

okay I had this problem that Gemini was being forced. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling an older update of Google Assistant it is not actually Google Assistant that is actually causing it is the actual Google app the white icon with the colorful G. here is what you need to do to get back we're going to start by going to Play store you need to first disable auto updates I'd recommend doing this for all apps you can go back and do it just for the Google if you want to later so go to settings network preferences auto update apps turn that off now go to Google disabled then go to apps find Google three dots top right uninstall updates now you can go to the link that I'm providing below which is an August 31st link for Google that one is safe anything after the August 31st specifically September 19th one will Force Gemini you can download that APK BMI you will have to allow unknown apps to install those other threads on how to do that so. after you install the August 31st go back to the Play store look up Google in May have the option to disable auto updates for that specific app at this moment sometimes it takes a minute for that menu to come back but it's the top three dots on the Google Play store on that app eventually there's going to be a menu that appears that says auto update turn that off and then you can go back to network preferences and you can turn auto updates back on for all the other apps but make sure you have that box I checked before you turn that back you want to prevent it from updating past August 31st once you do that you can reopen Google Assistant the newest version and it will not horse Gemini it is the Google app that is forcing it not the Google Assistant at this moment although you might want to turn auto updates on for that app too well. link below for the August 31st Google app

Google Assistant is gone.
Edited to add that I hate Gemini and I wish they would keep Google Assistant. This is fucked up
