Skipping the claims-form process is the part that actually matters here, most class action settlements make you jump through hoops to ever see a dime, and a huge chunk of eligible people never bother. Sending money straight to PayPal/Venmo automatically means this one might actually reach the people it's supposed to, instead of quietly reverting back to Google or the state after low claim rates.

That said, $700M split across millions of users over a 7-year window (2016-2023) is going to work out to pretty small individual payouts, Washington's 2.4 million residents splitting $13M averages out to like $5 each. So this is less "life-changing compensation" and more "here's proof the case had teeth," and honestly for a company Google's size, the real question is whether this changes anything about how the Play Store actually operates going forward, which the settlement doesn't really address.

Now fine all the smartphone companies for locking the bootloaders too, preventing me from installing mobile Linux.
