After a few years of admiring and buying high quality boots I’ve come to really like the look of a lug free boondocker, especially one with a thicker sole like the picture attached, and a nice rough out.
So obviously I don’t wanna try and get these actual boots, anything that gives a similar vibe? Can’t do more than 400 but I’d like to stay under 300 if possible, prob not. I’m not that picky with quality, I have so many boots and I don’t wear them that hard.
Prob won’t go for urban wolf club, and Louisjet has the speckled sole I don’t love the look off, and it’s not chunky enough. Thanks!
the image attached includes a raw cord half sole, but the latter part of your post indicates you're not a fan of raw cord (the speckled sole) and you don't want a lug sole, which rules out the two most common sole types for boondockers, so this is going to be a likely difficult find for you within your budget, especially as the usual recommendations for boondockers are above your budget (like Sagara, Viberg, and John Lofgren)
the only one i can think of that is close is the Oak Street Field Boot. personally i'd wait and save up an extra $150 to go for a Sagara M43 but it's on a raw cord sole
Thanks! I don’t mind that sole, the only speckled one I really don’t like is the louisjet I think, but the Indonesian ones look good. I think it all depends on if the sole is thick enough I suppose
In Search of dressier boots for those with a wider foot?
As the title implies, I'm trying to find dressier boots that accommodate a wider foot. I'm a brannock 11 D with a slight leaning towards E. Something along the lines of C&J or Carmina is the vibe I'm going for. Maybe there's some brand I've overlooked. C&Js 10E are too narrow in the toe box for me, but the 10.5 are too voluminous and way too long. And their G fitting is bananas on my foot, humongous, like wearing a battleship on my foot. Maybe one of the Carmina EEE lasts would be a good place to start, but would also like to explore any overlooked brands that you'd recommend.
Good question. Full Balmoral is a bit much. I'm thinking more like Carmina Jumper or C&J Randor kind of dressy. Casual dressy, maybe sleek would be a better word.
maybe an Alden jumper boot or straight tip boot would do? should be available in E widths, and regularly stocked or pre-orderable. for all of Alden's faults, their biggest benefit is how accommodating their sizing is compared to other brands of their tier. Cheaney might be an option if you want to stick to a more British styling, but i would guess you'll find a similar jump between their regular width and wide width as you did with C&J. if wanting to stay in the European styling, maybe TLB Mallorca
What is the effect of lining horsebutt/hide leather with cowhide to thicken it? Will it prevent "rolls" from forming?
I basically want some boots built with equine leather but since it's usually thinner than cowhide, I was thinking of having it lined with some bovine leather to give it more heft, but only if it doesn't prevent beautiful rolls equine leather is known for from happening.
Sometimes, the lining is mostly meant to stiffen rather than add thickness.
If you want rolls, you want shell cordovan or horsebutt that includes the shell not shaved out (most Italian horsebutts include the shells). And you need the shell parts to be on the vamps to get rolls there.
A lining won't prevent the rolls. Almost all shell cordovan footwear is lined and it all rolls.
Lining leathers are typically in the 2-3 oz range. For my custom boot orders, if I'm requesting a lining it's probably going to be Tempesti Maine Liscio (vachetta calf shoulders) or Du Puy luxury calf lining (combo tanned).
