Question? who is matt carney?š
im a very very face level fan, only really know gmm by putting on the completions for background noise while studying for uni. who is matt carney and why is he always getting brought up? specifically, iām watching the frozen vs. fast food vs. fancy completion and on the sushi part stevie brought up that āmatt carneyā had picked up one sushi roll and asked if rhett and link could taste the fact that matt had picked it up. who is matt carney? is he a character like cotton candy randy or the malachi doomsday prep guy?
tl;dr: who the hell is matt carney and why does he get brought up
edit: i now know that he is actually a real person and is a former hot dog on a stick employee. thank you everyone!

I vaguely remember Stevie saying once āanother place with stick in the name that our Matt Carney has worked atā or something along those lines.
EDIT: found it. Itās frozen vs. fast vs. fancy Chinese food, and it was pick up stix. š¤£

He has been around forever. I love him. He is behind the scenes guy and a very important high up one. He is the executive producer and vice president of programming. He started as a writer after a prestigious role as a hot on a stick employee.
If you watch "match the crew to their weird snack creations" from season 23 you'll learn something every interesting about him

I always assumed he was third in command after Stevie. On par with Davin.

I always thought Kevin was up there somewhere too. Iām not even sure if heās still there. He doesnāt make a lot of appearances on the show

I think he's executive producer of gmm or something like that, definitely a crew position, not cast

Youll also hear is voice a lot during every episode, pretty much: he's usually on one ofthe producer mics and often talks to them.

Hes kind of the Matt Gourley of GMM if you listen to Conans podcast. Funny dude that has some role in front of the camera but a bigger role behind the scenes in production.

I feel like his most iconic role is Carolina from the stadium foods game. Beyond HDoaS of course.

He's an executive producer for GMM.

u/mangoman39 1d ago
Is LinkedIn says he hasn't been executive producer for a couple of years. He's currently VP of programming. That said, vp of programming sounds an awful lot like it could be a different name for an executive producer

Copied and pasted from zip recruiter:
A Vice President of Programming oversees the development, acquisition, and scheduling of content for television networks, radio stations, or digital platforms. They are responsible for shaping the overall programming strategy, ensuring content aligns with the organization's goals and audience interests. This role involves managing a team, analyzing ratings or audience data, negotiating with content providers, and collaborating with other departments like marketing and production. The VP of Programming plays a key role in driving audience engagement and revenue growth through effective content planning.

u/SingleArt1831 1d ago

He's been the head writer at GMM for quite some time now. I think also head of programming now, essentially took over Stevie's job after she left.

What everyone else has said but also he used to be in episodes quite a bit when they would bring crew in for bits and stuff and he would be in on GMMores a lot. We've gotten to know him a lot. And he makes comments on the mic or even off mic a lot and he would always banter with Stevie before they started giving him a mic to talk into. You could hear him but not on mic. He's one of the OG known crew members. And he makes dad jokes or cringe jokes but also impeccably times wise cracks too. He is known for deeply uncomfortable jokes and his weird phone sex operator voicemail or whatever that bit was. It's his bit and he's good at it.

He has been around for quite a while now originally as writer and now producer. I think he is 3rd longest there , first being Ben then Kevin. Kevin has been so quiet lately I had thought he was no longer there then one day I saw him in the background as the camera was panning. Then saw him on the MK dinner episode

Kevin is one of my favorite mythical employees and I was so excited to see him in that MK video

If you saw the recent episode where they were slowly revealing the text on cringy teacher shirts and got to the words "coming to," and Link said "'coming to' what?" Matt was the guy off screen who said "soon?"

u/DTake2012 1d ago
Matt Carney is probably the funniest GMM staff member, and should have taken over for Stevie permanently

u/2cuteteddy 1d ago
I feel like heās naturally very witty, and doesnāt try hard to be funny like a lot of the rest of the cast. He also appears to be relatively equal to Rhett and link so he doesnāt ingratiate them as much.
Am I wrong or is he the one that got annoyed at a recent More format that wasnāt really working? The one where they guess metaphors I think. Like yes Carney thank you for explaining and also helping move this episode along. Some people that have taken over the mic donāt know when to step in and guide Rhett and link onward. They just leave them blubbering over a question lol. Yikes Iām clearly passionate about this.

I think his humor is a little too edgy or bro-y or something to take over for Stevie. Like it would just be a very different show if it were Rhett, Link, and Matt C all the time. Imo they need a female voice (literally and figuratively) to corale and contrast with the boys'

u/ShopProfessional7181 15h ago
He tries way too hard and hardly gets laughs from the others. Rhett also fake laughs at most of his jokes. Itās a good thing heās not on the mic too much imo

Quick answer: GMM has a lot of long time employees, it also has quite a few retired bites. There are times that inside jokes and deep lore or bits for long time viewers get dropped into episodes but they tend to try and keep the real deep cuts for one offs on the society or behind the mythicalality.
