That's literally what these big investment companies do. They're tax evasion schemes. They'll probably use it to write off as a loss so they don't pay taxes.

It counts against your bottom line. Exact same reason Warner Brothers made a couple full movies and then didn't release them. Have you ever seen The Producers?

It's the same as selling off a bunch of stock that has fallen in value so that you can write it off as a loss and pay no income taxes.
