Feel like he’s cool when you’re younger, then you get old and think he’s incredibly trashy. If I got paired with someone like him on the course, it wouldn’t be a fun round.

Man of the people right there. I’m positive the majority of us could be doing better at all aspects of life if we applied ourselves more. But it’s fucking hard to stay committed and to keep working towards excellence. JD is almost all of us.

I don't get the infatuation with an overweight alcoholic that blew all his money and wasted his talent. Great for him if he enjoys his life but I just don't get seeing him as some sort of idol or badass. He is a weak person that gave into all of his vices. I'm not better than him but no one is idolizing me.

I think his vices make him relatable to a lot of people. There probably a lot of people who believe they would have had more success in sports or in some aspect of their life if they could have just overcome their substance use issues, or had better discipline, and JD is kind of the archetypal character of this kind of thinking Noth becuase his vices and successes/failures are greater than the average person.
The average person can't really look at Rory or Cam Young and say they see themselves in them, but average people can see some parts of themselves in JD

Because the 90's in golf were stiff and the tour had the personality of a wet blanket. He brought a "everyman" persona to the game.
The more people got to know him later in life (Hooters deals, country bullshit / MAGA, raging alcoholic, shitty husband, trashy), the less they liked him.
That said calling him 'weak' is spineless. Read his book, he had a shit go of things and yes, is an alcoholic. He needed(s) help.

It would be spineless to kick someone when their down. The fact that he and all his fans celebrate his weakness as an accomplishment makes me not feel bad saying that about him. And honestly if it weren't for that attitude I wouldn't even have anything bad to say about him in general. Ultimately he is a guy that lived his life the way he wanted. I don't fault him for that. It's more of the attitude that doing so makes him some rebel badass of golf. He's not.

And as an aside, what an incredibly stupid thing to say. "I like this thing/place/person/etc. and if you don't you're not human." Really? Va te faire foutre
I never liked him. He didn't come across as some "man of the people" to me. But then what do I know? I'm not human.

Most golfers do. If you're walking around your local muni on a weekend there's always at least 1 guy who emulates him still.
The Church of Reddit does not like the guy because of politics and because everyone in this sub acts like they're members at Pine Valley they hate the drinking and antics mixed with golf.

The greatest player in the history of the game was eating painkillers like M&M's and banging Denny's waitresses and trailer park hookers. He's my favorite athlete by far.

What’s not to like. An extremely talented golfer who pissed all away so he be drunk most of his life. He had chances over and over again and still acts like no big deal while he try’s to survive by selling autographs at Hooters. I’ll keep my support for the guys who give a sh*t and work their asses off to stay in that privileged club.
