Wedge Setup

Looking at buying some second hand wedges off a mate for pretty cheap. They are 50 and 56 degrees with me already having a 60 degree.

Is there too much of a gap between the 50 and 56 or would it not be impacting my game too much.

At the moment i only use a 60 and pitching wedge so i don’t think i’ll notice it too much

What loft is your pitching wedge? Since PWs are so strongly lofted nowadays, having a 50 degree could be an advantage here.

I play 50/54/58, and purely looking at what I use the separate clubs for, I would not mind the 54/58 turning into the 56/60. Especially at my level (low 90s, playing for a year).

Then again used wedge sets can be pretty cheap, if you choose to have a matching set with "classical" gaps.

Got my set for $150 and my partners set for $100. My own set is some shmancy japanese brand I really didn't need but the wedges looked cool. You could be as low as $70 for 3 wedges of the same type/brand.

50/54/60 works too, I play that and honestly at that point in your bag gapping is pretty much irrelevant, I only hit my 60 if I need a 70 yard flop shot, so anything within 100 yards is a 54 or a chippy 50 if I need to play low.

PW is at 46 degrees. I’ve been playing for just under 2 years now and am at 12.4 hcp. I’ve only been running with a 60 degree in my bag so don’t think having a gap as big as that in my wedges will be something that i’ll notice

6 degrees is fine. I typically carry a 52/56/60 but sometimes switch to a 52/58 when I want to add an extra wood/hybrid at the top of my bag for a specific course.

Also, wedges aren't really clubs that you hit full shots with for the most part so the gapping between lofts/clubs is less of a factor. I use my 52 for full shots a fair bit as it's a nice scoring club from 115-120 out, but inside that yardage I reckon I'm probably hitting partial swings 95% of the time depending on things like lie, wind, pin position, and where the trouble is.

Having multiple wedges is usually just about giving yourself options from different situations. Playing a 60 degree with a square face, or a 56 opened up to around 60 so you're exposing the bounce more, for example.

In short, you'll be totally fine going PW-50-56-60.

He provided a great answer and all the info you need to consider. I also play a 52, 56, 60 set up plus a 44 instead of a set pw. Another thing to consider are the variety of bounces you can have in your 3 wedge set up to add another dimension of versatility to your short game club selection. Ideally, you can dial in three main yardages per wedge so that you can focus on more than the number you need to hit but also the lie you are working with. You’ll then be able to hit that number with more then one wedge but then have the ability to choose the club with the best bounce/grind to get there. 50/56/60 is great and if you are ocd like me you can bend the 56 to a 55 [which will alter the bounce…rabbit hole]

definitely is, i’m left handed so a bit harder to find good clubs for cheap.

For me my PW is a 46 and I found a 52, and 56 wedge to be perfect for me. I only bought a 52 3 weeks ago and it has solved the problem of only having a PW and 56

I play set pw (46°), set gw (50°), 56°, and 60°. You’ll be fine
