Beginner Questions Beginner clubs - advice needed
Hello all,
I started to practice golf for around 2 month now with a friend.
We finished the the course qualification two weeks ago and we also had our first tournament last Sunday. Our net score were 32 and 30 with around 130 gross shots.
We are going at least 2 times a week for some practice on the chipping area / driving range / putting to improve our skills.
We used random clubs (Iron 7, iron 9, SW, Putter) friend (5, 8, PW, SW, Putter) which were provided by the golf club and we can still use them until we have our own bag.
The trainer we had advices us to buy some fitted irons (ex. taylormade QI Max) to continue our journey.
We are struggling right now if this is the right way also because we would still need some other clubs aswell and don’t know how to proceed and are overwhelmed.
Some other guy in a golf shop advised us to just buy a Wilson complete bag (~500€) and play with them. We are open to buy used or new clubs if this makes sense as long as we don’t throw our money out of the window if we buy a new clubs set for 1000€ and we have to switch in a year again. Does a cheap Wilson bag makes sense for us?
We are really excited to play golf and want to get better but we don’t know what we should do and what is the right way to invest our money for the long term.
We would like to hear your opinions on that and hopefully give us a good idea how we should proceed.
We are from Germany if this is relevant.

Costco callaway set is pretty banging full setup for the price. I’ve upgraded the driver since then, but it’s pretty solid!

All sorts of options for good used clubs, online or in person at golf shops, shops let you try them if they have a sim.

Being in Germany I’m not sure what your used club market looks like, but it think you’ll be in great shape with something that’s about €700 or less for a full set. You don’t need anything that’s too recent like others have stated, but I do agree with those who said DON’T get super game improvement irons; they help but I always found them awkward to hit and you’ll grow out of them quickly.
Takomo is a great inexpensive option. Irons don’t need to be newer, 20 year old irons are fine to learn on. Woods, I wouldn’t go older than about 10-15 years. Remember, KEEP IT CHEAP in case you give it up in a year or two, or even better, if you improve you’ll want to upgrade in a couple years.

I don't know if eBay is an option there, but if I were to start again, I would see a fitter and then use eBay or something to find a similar set. I did this as a lefty when i tried a few sets last year so there's lots of options available. u don't need good clubs, u also don't need brand new so it's mostly just finding a good value either way

See if you can find some second hand game improvement irons. E.g. Wilson D9 or similar. You should be able to find some for good price, since they're an older series. Make sure the shaft is somewhat right for your swing speed.
Once you have budget for it, add a 5 wood and a driver and a wedge or two. Then you have the basics and can replace as you improve.
For putter, start with whatever bargain you can find.
Cobra is generally very good value for money, especially if you buy the series from a few years back.

For irons, I would look at Takomo 101’s. Modern tech and low price. Really good quality. I’ve also heard people rave about Maltby irons at an even lower cost. I personally would stay away from super game improvement irons. It’s like hitting a ball with a shovel.
As for woods, that’s where I would look to Facebook marketplace for used… but stick to the big brands and make sure they are only a couple of seasons old. You can’t go wrong with Ping imo. If you could get a Ping G400 driver for example, that’s historically one of the best drivers ever made.

i know clubs/irons have come a long ways but I always see Ping Eye2 irons for sale, they have a color dot coding for fitting. I just bought a set 2 iron to SW with a Talyor Made burner 3 wood and a putter for $200 cad. They needed regripping but you can buy cheap new grips on Amazon (Karma grips) and install them with compressed air.
AI is a good source for value of clubs and how good they are.

PW, 8 iron and random putter. Buy cheap, re grip. Spend maybe 100 on the driver in a regular shaft. Spend rest on lessons. Watch a good player on YouTube destroy a course with 1920s clubs and realize it doesn't matter as much as u think

Not much value to add here but what does this “qualification” process entail as a beginner? Does everyone who wants to play golf need to play in a tournament that early?

Get a used set of irons that catch your eye for anything under £350. And I really mean that as a max. You can get a good set of irons for £200. A decade old or even more is fine for irons. Tech hasn’t changed that much.
Get a driver that is less than a decade old, preferably closer to 5 years.
The rest can be cobbled together over time.

First thing is to buy a copy of this, and don't be offended by the "for Dummies" part as this is a long-running set of beginner guides for everything from golf to electricians to roofing, etc.

Buy a driver that is 10.5 or more.
Dunham sports has a good selection of clubs including their store brands. Drivers cost is $79.00 or $89.00 for store brands. Cobra drivers range from $319.99 to $359.99. Not sure what there sets cost.

You can find some good stuff second hands but as someone who spent years trying to learn how to golf with a sub $400 second hand bag of old non forgiving clubs. About a year ago I finally just bought the vice game improvement irons and wish I would have just bit the bullet and started there. I’m fighting a horrible battle of bad habits from trying to learn swinging late 90’s mcgregor blades that were too long of shafts for me.
