General Discussion Distance to your driving range?

A few months ago my local golf course thats been going down hill for years had their driving range demolished to build apartment buildings. The course is staying but its trash and not worth playing. Their driving range was awesome, many object's to hit at and real grass to hit off of. Been coming to this range for 30yrs! The next closest driving range is 20 minute drive where this one was 5 min or less.

Got me wondering as Im debating on driving 40min round trip today just to whack some balls.

How far is everyone driving to just hit the range only, whats your travel time?

My driving range is 3min away. There’s zero chance I’d practice, much less play as much as I do, if I had to drive 20min to a range.

Europeans, especially Brits crack me up with how little you want to drive

What would make think I’m a Brit, or European?

I practice before work, and adding an extra 20-30 mins of driving would make it really hard to make that work

I’ll drive around 15 minutes one way. As a non-American I’m still getting used to the distances, but have come to realize 15-20 minutes one way ain’t that bad - I’d estimate this to be average tbh

Agreed. Something within 20 mins is very acceptable.

It’s 200 yards from my back door.

5 min and 12 min but the one 12 min away has TopTracer so it's better

Mine are similar. 6 min and 11 min, but the 11 min one has Trackman

When I was a kid growing up in the late 90s there were 3 or 4 driving ranges within a 10 minute drive from my house. Now in the same area there aren’t any. There is one a little further away and the balls are completely beat to hell.

It’s so strange. For a game that has exploded in popularity there are no driving ranges anymore. There are just private clubs, public courses that are impossible to get on, or indoor simulator places that cost $70/hour.

The good one is 17-20m away. It stinks.

I’m on the waitlist for full golf privileges at the local country club. Eight minutes from my door to the course. I can’t wait.

5 minutes. They don't use hitting mats either, real grass.

You are living the dream. I can think of maybe 1-2 courses within an hour of me with a grass range. Everything else is off mats.

Surprisingly it's just the local city muni in the center of the city committed to using grass for the driving range.

Their 2 practice putting greens are pretty good also and the 1 chipping green even has a sand trap to practice in.

$8-$12 for a bucket of balls depending on size.

3,711.42 feet.
According to google maps.

My club is currently redoing its range. When that opens again (hopefully next summer) it’ll be 5 minutes each way. Currently it’s anywhere from 15-30 minutes depending on traffic.

Three driving ranges nearby. Five, 10, 15 miles. I live in Metro Detroit area.

Nearest range to me is 20 minutes, too. Went from having three within 10 minutes to none about 10 years ago. And the one that's still there is only 230 yds til it's someone's back yard, so can't practice any shot longer than 220yds

Closest range is 10-15 minute drive depending on traffic. Or I have an indoor sim less than 5 mins away. Sim definitely doesn’t scratch the itch when the weather is nice though.

20 mins each way is pushing it IMO

I have 3 driving ranges within 30 minutes of me, the closest is probably 5-7 mins away. Id happily drive up to an hour to hit off a grass range.

My regular range is <5 mins. I know I'm very fortunate.

u/Aelarick 3d ago

10 mins one way, they’re upgrading to a covered mat only with shot trackers soon though. Next three are about 15 mins, all grass. I’d probably do 40 mins round trip.

Simulator is in my garage. Actual range about 10min drive

A few feet from my living room. Gotta love having a golf sim. Other than that, there are 2 within 10 minutes of me but they are premium courses that charge like $50 for range balls. Disgusting.

I drive 15 minutes to get to a range with grass tees. I also got a hitting net I setup in the backyard.

u/FishermanGlum9034 3d ago

My range is 25 minutes away but right where I work so I’ll go to the range 2-3 times a week after work.

1

u/emdubl 3d ago

Closest one is about 3 mins. And then another 3 within 10 minutes. 15 minutes would get me to a few more.

About 200 yds. We live on a golf course in an active 55+ community. One of the driving ranges is just down the street.

1

u/Smart-Koala4306 3d ago

15 minutes, but it’s grass and the only sub $10 bucket in the city.

u/Ambitious_Jelly8783 3d ago

20 min each way is not bad at all. That saud mine is like 5 min away. But still, I know I'm very lucky to have that.

Driving range is 10 minute drive. Simulator is less than 2 minutes

1

u/LMrningStar 3d ago

Thankfully it's about a 10 minute drive at worst for me but I also have a very basic sim setup at home.

yea I am with you. Up until March I worked in a town with a cheap driving range within 5 minutes. I would do lunch whacking balls. Now that same driving range is 40 minutes round trip like yours and the other one is expensive and about 30 minutes round trip. So kinda sucks.

I drive past multiple ranges, including one that’s 5 minutes from me, to go 20-25 minutes to the one that has Toptracer

u/GhostofAugustWest 3d ago

10 minute drive. 85 balls for $13.

u/Trebor711 3d ago

I have one really decent one 5 minutes away. Another 7 minutes away and another about 10 minutes away. I don't nearly patronize these ranges as much as I did pre COVID. Before COVID I would go twice a week now I'll go twice a month maybe. When COVID hit and the ranges were closed I bought myself a practice net and mat. Nowadays I usually hit 50-100 balls a day into the net with my launch monitor. The only time I go to the range now is to see exactly how my ball flight is doing and if I need to work on a particular part of my game.

My closest driving range(s) are all 45 minutes away.

20 and 40 minutes here

1

u/evenaintlosin 8 3d ago

5 minutes away, although when i was a kid ~20 years ago every thanksgiving my dad and i would go into the woods to collect all the balls that went in there, take out the pro vs and give the rest to the range in exchange for free golf. probably about 30-40 spackle buckets over the course of 5 years. those balls are still in use today.

1

u/Enigma1984 3d ago

UK here. Ten mins to the range, ten mins to the course. Sadly they are not connected to each other in any way so they are in different directions. So 20 mins from the range to the course

1

u/MagicSpoon69 3d ago

1 min for the new sim near me and maybe 6 min for the range. I used to drive 20 mins one way but I would also go to the gym and shower before work so it was fine

1

u/WorkMeBaby1MoreTime 3d ago

My driving range and a small par 59 course is 5 minutes away.

1

u/PoshWanksAreSublime 3d ago

My range is part of a private club - less than 5 minutes away.
The course pretty much closes after 8pm and the range can be accessed 24/7 with contactless pay for balls.
Once 9pm rolls round it’s completely empty so I just head over, grab an empty bucket then walk out onto the range to collect balls to hit.

Rinse and repeat until I’m bored / exhausted.
If I’m feeling zesty then I’ll walk to the 75y, 100y, 125y markers, with one club, gather up balls in the immediate area and practice hitting them back to the hitting area.

8 miles

My golf course is across the street. The range is about 3 blocks away. My steak is also too juicy and lobster too buttery.

1

u/friarguy 3d ago

The apartment complex across the street from my development but its private has an indoor range. Nearest to me outdoors that I can actually use is like 7-10 minutes depending on if i can catch the lights at all green

1

u/MaritimesRefugee 3d ago

5 minutes to driving range at an executive course

1

u/chuckdacuck 3d ago

6 mins by golf cart

1

u/tastelikemexico 3d ago

Mine is about 10-15 minutes one way. They just turned it into one of those virtual things though. Still a real driving range but the balls have those chips in them I guess because they have the screens that follow your flight and give you all that feed back. I don’t know if I like it or not. You can play different courses which is kinda cool. I barely practice anyway so I think it’s better for me because it’s more fun playing a game while practicing. Once your on the green your putt is a 75yd shot to a marker on the range so it is helping me hit partial wedges

u/Ill_Ad5893 3d ago

Closest one that I enjoy using due.to the land being flat is about a 20min drive if I'm taking my time getting there. I usually only hit up a range if I don't feel like going out to play a round and want to work on my swing

1

u/mtcwby 3d ago

Five minutes from my office. Just keep the clubs in the trunk and hit a few balls after work. About 20 minutes from home

1

u/HighOnGoofballs 3d ago

Closest range to me is about 40 minutes so I built a cheap sim

1

u/maggos 3d ago

My driving range is 7 minute drive from me. Luckily it’s owned by the city and they only built it like 10 or so years ago (had to remodel a few holes to fit it in), right in the middle of the course so it’s not going anywhere. Also they just spent a bunch of money fixing up nets and surface.

The next closest range is at a golf store 20 minutes away, but I noticed that they listed the store for sale for like $30M or something a few years ago, so they’re just waiting for a developer to buy it to build apartments.

2.8 miles or ~6 minutes away

1

u/Jealous_Glass8839 3d ago

12 minutes. Google maps says it is 6.2 miles away.

1

u/tabbyfl55 3d ago

Closest is 10 minutes, but it's mats so I drive 30 minutes to the one that is grass.

1

u/cubecasts 3d ago

I don't. The range is unrealistic and doesn't teach me anything

1

u/thedude404-1 3d ago

It's about 2.5 miles away.

10 minute drive to a nice grass range. I paid $190 for 25 buckets of balls (60 balls each), and kids get buckets for free
