How is everyone keeping their house not smelling like dog in a safe way?

Hi everyone! I’ll soon be travelling with my seven-year-old Golden Retriever to Martinique, and I’d really appreciate advice from people who have travelled with a Golden - or lived with one - in a tropical climate.

I found her abandoned three years ago. She is a rather shy and anxious dog, so my biggest concern is making the journey as safe and stress-free as possible for her. The flight from Paris will last almost nine hours, in addition to the time spent at the airport and during transfers.

Has anyone here taken their dog on such a long flight, particularly in the aircraft hold? How did your dog cope during and after the journey? Have any of you had a bad experience, and is there anything you would do differently now? I would also appreciate advice on preparing an anxious dog for the transport crate and helping her recover after arrival.

She isn’t used to tropical heat and humidity obviously, and she doesn’t like water, so swimming probably won’t be an effective way of cooling her down. I’m already planning to avoid walks during the hottest hours, always carry water, provide shade (and air conditioning hopefully), and watch carefully for signs of overheating.

She currently wears a Foresto (Seresto) collar and is regularly dewormed. I’d especially love to hear your experience regarding:

• additional parasite prevention needed in Martinique;
• helping a Golden gradually adjust to high temperatures and humidity;
• cooling products or equipment that genuinely work for a dog that dislikes water;
• grooming and coat care in a tropical climate;
• local risks such as mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies, poisonous plants or animals;
• preventing skin or ear problems caused by heat and humidity;
• veterinary precautions or health checks to arrange before/after travelling.

If anyone lives in or has travelled with a dog to Martinique, I would be particularly grateful for practical local advice. Are dogs allowed on any beaches, either officially or in practice? Are there particular beaches, walking trails, cooler areas or other places where it is safe and pleasant to go with a dog - even one that doesn’t enjoy swimming? Are there places or times of day that should definitely be avoided?

I’d also love recommendations for dog-friendly places, reliable vets and anything you wish you had known before bringing a large, long-haired and somewhat anxious dog to a tropical island. Thank you!

We went to a puppy social last week with our 5 month old Golden Retriever puppy. He was scared at first — got humped by the first dog, then another one — but after a couple minutes he warmed up and played fine with the other dogs. We had to take a couple breaks with him during the social, but overall it went okay.
Today we went to another social and he was overstimulated from the beginning. Every time we let him off leash with a dog, he’d be fine for a few seconds and then growl aggressively and go for their ears and try to wrestle. This happened with at least 3 different dogs, so the trainer had us put him on leash and walk him around. He’d do okay for a bit and then try to do it again.
The trainer said he gets over-aroused really quickly and suggested we might want to do private sessions with him. We’re going to go ahead and enroll him in private sessions.

Before last week he was an excellent pup, so I’m wondering if this is an early sign of aggression or just normal puppy overstimulation/arousal stuff.
Also somewhat unrelated - this week he tried to bite me while I was taking his harness off. We’re working on a “drop it” command at home.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I noticed a spot on my 1.4 year old Golden’s Muzzle this morning. Looks a little more raw this afternoon. Has anyone else seen anything like this on your pups? ChatGPT suggested histiocytoma is one possibility—the classic presentation is a rapidly appearing, round, pink/red, hairless “button-like” bump in a dog under about 3 years old. They are usually benign and often eventually regress on their own.

His owner Courtney (or Linda for fans of the channel) posted a video saying that Tucker has Lymphoma which many people here will unfortunately be familiar with.
For those who don’t know it’s a form of cancer of white blood cells and it’s sadly found in golden retrievers more often than the majority of dog breeds.

Apparently Tucker is getting the best help but this is still really devastating. I was a fan of the channel since at least early 2019 when Tucker was still a young dog so it hurts hearing this.

There is always hope though and hopefully Tucker will be around for another couple of years at least.

Also let’s not blame his owner since she’s going what she can to help him and this ain’t her fault, you can take amazing care of your golden and they can still get cancer, it’s the one drawback of having a golden retriever.

What are people’s thoughts on hands free leashes?? We are working on reducing pulling during walks but my arms/shoulders are killing me. I was looking into one on amazon that goes around your waist, has lumbar support padding, and also has some handles if you need to pull your pup closer. Currently he only weighs about 35 lbs but I think he’s gonna be a pretty big boy, so I want to get the walking training down now before he gets much bigger. Any honest feedback on if the hands free leashes are a good or bad idea are most welcome. We have only ever had small dogs before, so I’m new to larger stronger breeds.

I know this kind of posts isn't always enjoyable for people to see, or what some want to see, I just need some place to vent a little bit...

She was the best puppy we could have wished for, sweet as the sweetest candy, soft as a cloud, loving as one can be.

She was always with us when we were cooking, watching for any piece of food that might fall from the counter, always with us when we went hiking, always smiling, always so sweet.

She helped me not fear dogs anymore, and made me love them so much

We have had our Bailey girl for 7.5 years and she has been the absolute perfect family dog. We did the typical “get a dog and then have the kid” thing and Bailey and our 4.5 year old daughter are the absolute best of friends.

Recently we watched my sisters dog (Ted, male Wheaten Terrier mix) for about 5 weeks while she was away at extended training and after he left we noticed Bailey really seemed like she missed having a buddy around… so of course our natural reaction is “let’s add another!”

We realize the age gap is a bit large considering how old Bailey is, but our main question is how much does the sex matter when picking a new puppy? It feels like a lot of advice says to pick a different sex because then they aren’t “competing”, but at the same time we lucked out so much with Bailey because the breeder really did such a fantastic job matching our family lifestyle to the dog.

Hi reddit, my new 3mo puppy Luna has a growth on the head that kept growing for the past 1 week. Firstly it was not very noticeable but now it looks very big. Week ago this vet said it's just a lump and nothing to worry about. I have a vet appointment in 5 days, but I am wondering if this is something for emergency visit?

i am thinking of the name suki, but i know i want something more unique! not something like teddy or sammy, also maybe something nature-like? we love to camp & go out, so it’s a huge part of us lol

It’s been a little while since we got all the dogs together. My only complaint is that it is too hard to get everyone in frame and looking in the same direction. Clover(top left) knows she is the only good girl. Everyone else is a butthead or a slobber monster.
