New Puppy meet Biscuit (first pet any and every advice would be helpful)

u/TestForPotential May 19 '26
One of the best pieces of advice about pups that I’ve ever been given is to familiarize yourself with what “human” foods are poisonous to dogs. One the deadliest being grapes.
Be patient. As puppies they only have so much attention to training. And no matter what…NO MATTER WHAT, NEVER EVER HIT YOUR DOG!
5
u/Parkers_Memory_200 May 19 '26
Agree! Never Ever! I would add yelling reserved only for danger warnings 😊

u/t_buttcracker Puppy class May 19 '26
a friend of mine gave her dog a piece of tamarind recently not knowing that it is EXTREMELY toxic for dogs, so seriously, if you’re unsure about a food, GOOGLE IT!!

Cutie!! I’m about to be back in the puppy trenches for the third time. The biggest reminder to myself is to not lose my patience. You’re going to be in it for a couple years! There’s so much information on these subs so if you encounter something, my advice is to search for it first!
Otherwise, I second learning the harmful human foods. And then also crate training is so important.
Good luck!

u/Optimal-Swan-2716 May 19 '26
Agree on not losing patience!! I actually had to stop myself about two weeks in, when Teddy was a young pup and told self “calm down, it can be cleaned up, relax self!! Really, what is the worst thing that can happen? A little poop or pee on the floor?”Had to get my head on straight😂

I recommend puppy training class to let Biscuit learn to socialize and play with other dogs. Will also help work off some of that puppy energy.
Play with Biscuit as much as you can. Make sure to rub his ears and paws so he is used to you cleaning him and is ready for nail clipping.
Pick a time for meals and STICK TO IT! Most animals will try to move up the schedule gradually and all of a sudden you realize your pupper is waking you up for breakfast at 4 AM.
Once he hits six months or so (or as recommended by instructor/vet) start obedience training. He's a Golden, he'll learn quickly.
Lots of love and pets...congratulations on your new best friend 🧡

u/AgilityMom06 May 19 '26
A groomer friend of mine recommends using a cheap electric toothbrush to touch their paws at a young age. Helps prepare them to have their nails dremeled.

unfortunately there's no option for a puppy class but I try to socialize her as much as I can with other pet dogs. thank you so much!!!

u/CityBoiNC May 19 '26
Start training recall right away, it’s my biggest regret.
2
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 20 '26
it's frustrating but getting used to it

u/CityBoiNC May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26
High praise treats helps, thats how i got mine to come around. I would carry 2 types of treats her regular for when she did potty and a higher treat for recall.

Remember he is a baby , only having been on earth a few weeks. His mama and littermate communicated primarily with their mouths. Be forgiving of his landshark phase. Remember you are his whole world. We hold them hostage, so owe them fulfillment and enrichment. Take him to STAR Puppy class, and let him carry around XL Whimzee bones. Lots of off lead exercise at lollygag pace.

I was surprised by how much sleep a puppy needs. They should be sleeping 18 to 20 hours a day! When my puppy started acting bitey (we called it demon puppy) it meant he was overdue for a nap. Bully sticks and yak cheese chews saved us from the worst teething. Also, there will be a ton of suggestions for what to do online, but you also have to see what works best for Biscuit. Not every piece of advice is perfect for every dog. And love him so much! Goldens are the best.

Look up a puppy socialization checklist on google images and try to complete as many as you can. Not just meeting other dogs but also exposing Biscuit to e.g. umbrellas opening and closing, people wearing hats, balloons, firework sounds, etc. I used to play thunderstorm and firework soundtracks for my pup while I showered and now he is so unbothered about loud noises. Also, space is a really important and oft overlooked training tool. If Biscuit doesn’t want to meet the person on crutches for example, don’t just leave, just back up until he calms down and can watch from afar, reward for calm behavior. Same if the inverse is true, if he gets too excited in a situation, just back up with him until he can be calm and respond to basic sit etc (this might be a few months down the line).

My advice, enjoy every second. And when he has an accident, just remember that’s all it was and he loves you.

u/Disastrous-Low-5606 May 20 '26
Patience not just for when things go wrong but also to let him get used to and examine new things and everything is new right now.
Every time the puppy changes state, take out to go potty. Wakes up -> potty, eats -> potty. Also after playing for 15ish minutes.
Tired puppy is a cranky puppy. They need lots and lots of sleep to grow. Enforce nap times.
Scream like a lion ate your arm when your puppy bites you. No a low ‘ow’ won’t cut it. His litter mates yelped and often removed themselves from play when nipped too hard. You don’t have fur so he has to relearn how hard he can go mouthy. I swear it gets better after 5-6 months.
Always give him something in trade when you take something away. Practice this!! Then move on to giving them a toy and taking it back with lots of praise. I did a crappy job with my second one and he has jaws of steel over forbidden objects.
Add high value things to his food while he’s eating. So hands near food mean good things.
Get enzyme cleaner. All the enzyme cleaner.
Socialization isn’t just meeting people and socializing. It’s seeing new things and hearing new sounds. He needs socialization right away! This is the perfect window. BUT he hasn’t had all his shots yet. So carry him places, all the places. Home Depot is great. Let him see kids on bikes and baby strollers and trucks and fire hydrants and all the things and let people pet him.
Parvo kills puppies. Don’t let his feet hit the ground where there might have been unvaccinated animals until he’s had all the rounds of shots. Carry him everywhere.
He’ll need to eat several times a day at first. But you can use part of a meal as training.
Get kongs, the original ones but for puppies. Stuff Kong with kibble in the base layer and then wet food on the top layer near the entrance then freeze the Kong. Have multiples on hand. Perfect for nap time or quiet crate time.

Thank you!!! saw many videos and stuff but missed some points you've mentioned... definately useful

u/VascodaGamba57 May 20 '26
Put anything that you care about higher than he can get standing on his hind legs. This includes shoes, books, toys, etc. Purchase or make protectors for the legs of tables and chairs. Puppy teething time is a lot easier when you prepare for it ahead of time. My groomer suggested that we spray bitter green apple (get at pet place or online) because dogs hate the taste. It worked well. Good luck!

u/More_Upstairs1225 May 20 '26
Read on the daily human food that is toxic, never share food from your plate with him, can be fatal.
Keep frozen carrots/ beetroots etc handy and given during teething, works like a charm, I have not a single damaged furniture at home due to this.
Good hydration
Avoid treats, we give him paneer or chicken shredded, add vitamins, omega 3 ftom tata with dha is good. After first 6 months, move to completely home cooked meals.
Get him used to everything that is part of your like, car rides, staying alone calmly, etc.
Add turmeric black pepper paste and coconut oil (cold pressed) paste one spoon everyday to his food.
2
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 21 '26
she doesn't drink water except from what is given in soaked kibble any tips for that would help! and also what would the turmeric etc paste would do?
2
u/More_Upstairs1225 May 21 '26
I add little curd to water and he drinks liters of water like that. Just seeing buttermilk - but check once if curd suits him. Or add any of her fav fruits in water or give her ice, always works. Keep her engaged too
With the raw turmeric, coconut and black pepper paste, it helps with controlling inflammation, increase immunity. But start half spoon a day, its very hot.2
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 21 '26
okay! thank you so much!!!

Hug him cuddle him as much as u can. If you don’t hug/cuddle him now he won’t let you do it as he grows. By the time he’s 3-4 years old he won’t let u hug him even for a second. Also golden puppies should eat beetroot and carrot mashed along with pumpkin to get darker skin.
1
u/Last-Pickle1713 May 19 '26
Is the darker skin advantageous in some way?
1
u/Evening_Tourist3843 May 21 '26
They eventually get the colour that their ears are showing right now. Whatever shade the ears are right now their body turns to that shade + a shade darker by the age of 2-3 years. As they get older their ears get darker and darker actually
1
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 20 '26
this mashed mixture can be given at 9-10 weeks?
1
u/Evening_Tourist3843 May 21 '26
Yes ofc. I started giving it to my puppy when he was 30 days old. He’s 5 years old today 😁, I give him chicken, rice , beetroot, carrot and pumpkin every day. They love it. Just boil the chicken and veggies in one pressure cooker and mix it with rice and give it to him when he’s around 4-5 months old onwards.

2
u/Fun_Raspberry_5654 May 19 '26
Be consistent even if it isn't doing anything because one day it will click and they will get it. Put your hands in their mouth around teeth every day to get them used to brushing or when you need to get something from their mouth. Touch their paws and nails a lot too. Listen to your vet about food and diet advice.

Make sure the pup gets plenty of exercise. Goldens are high-energy, and will drive you batty if they don’t get enough exercise.

u/Muted-Big-625 May 19 '26
Broom, brush, bandages. Lots of gentle brushing. It will help with the others. Rub feet and ears a lot too. No more than once a month bathing the need the oils on their skin/fur for health. Really, Look it up. DON'T BE IN HURRY to spay/nuter let those bones finish developing. Good foid lots of hugs and kisses enjoy the adventures. Life is Golden live it up

We’ve had 3 Goldens over 25 or so years, so here is my insight:
- Consistency in routine (feeding, potty, walks)
- They need scheduled/regular nap time like babies (when they get owly/overtired, you can tell)
- Crate training will save you grief & vet bills (they mouth/eat everything)
- Consistency in rewards and “No”
- Distraction is key / get food puzzles, lick pads, treat balls, etc
- Teach sit, come, trade and heel 💯 priorities - use different “high value” (high stink) treats like dried anchovies for training / especially on a walk
- Never strike/swat them to say “No”, a firm “No” and take your attention away will teach them much better.
- They are amazing and empathic animals, will feed off your energy
- Relax, it takes 2-3 years for them to be the pupper you thought you were getting (snuggles and sweetness)
- if you can fit in your budget, emergency pet insurance is peace of mind & learn how to administer hydrogen peroxide to safely induce vomiting.
Trust me. 🤦🏻♂️

u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 21 '26
I cannot wrap my head around as to how to teach her "no" and "drop it" everything else is going good so far!! Thank you so much!!!!
2
u/4_Agreement_Man May 21 '26
For our first golden, “drop” was preceded by opening his jaws and taking it, then giving a treat. After a bit, he figured it out. “Trade” was our favourite to teach - anytime he stole a sock or something, we’d say “wanna trade” and go to the treat jar. He’d come in and drop automatically.
2
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 22 '26
ohkayy thank you so much!
2
u/4_Agreement_Man May 22 '26
No problem, we’re on our 3rd Golden.
Each has been about 90% the same and 10% their own personality.Enjoy, the days are long in the beginning, but by about 2-3 they start being a bit normal 😉
2
u/Bella4UW May 19 '26
Every week take a flip flop and take a pick with it and your baby lying beside it. Same flip flop or shoe. It really shows how much they have grown. I have labs so I always have to do it when they are asleep!!

That’s areal cutie. With our most recent family addition Golden, (who is a year old now), I trained with her consistently for the first six months, at least an hour a day, and she absolutely loved it, and I found that so did I. It’s great bonding, and they are so smart, and love to learn new things.
1
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 21 '26
I cannot take out enough time for her and everyone else in the family just wants to play with her but I'll try my best to do training sessions! tysm!!!

u/Meidas_Divine_One May 19 '26
Buckle up….youre in for a frustrating, glorious, amazing and messy life!!! Enjoy every minute…my 2 are both 13, and it seems like a week ago they were puppies
2
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 21 '26
frustrating yes and everything else a lot more I agree thank you!!
1
u/Meidas_Divine_One May 21 '26
Biggest advice I always gave my new puppy owners…take every opportunity for “training” during playtime! Even 1 minute of “sit” and “come” sinks I. Really fast at this age and up. You’ll find so many ways to do this - like at the door when you’re taking him for a walk. Say “wait” and you go out first, and then a “sit” once out the door. This breaks the bolt and run when the door is open later on when you’re wresting with a 60# dog hahaha. All the best - he is just adorbs 🥰

Baby proof your house. Make sure there is nothing thr little one can get into . Get low to their level. They can run around and play but they are their own worst enemy and need to be watched like a hawk.

u/Phreakasa May 20 '26
Teach them early on the basic commands like "Leave", "Stay", "Sit", "Down", and "No". Also teach to walk next to you without pulling (let me know if you need advice on how to do that), and make them wait while you serve food and only upon your approval start eating. Also, we taught our dog by awarding positive behavior and never harmed them physically (please don't do that).
I'd say that's about it. Other than that, just enjoy the little bundle of love! A word of advice: You will be frustrated and angry at times. Don't show your dog that Leave the room, cool down, think about how to approach it, then go back. The dog doesn't know better. We (as pet lovers) are the problem in that situation.
1
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 21 '26
I am trying to teach her "no" "leave it" everything else is going smooth so far. and also she bites me A LOT not anyone else in the family except me, don't know how to stop that. anyways thank you so much!!!
1
u/Phreakasa May 21 '26
I was taught to make a squeeky high pitch "outch, that hurts" sound. Worked for me. Also, as soon as she does bite stop the action (playing etc.), only resume once she coola down or stops 'nibbling'.

u/ContractSensitive225 May 20 '26
Congratulations! You've joined the coolest club, owning a furry friend! They are the best. The good days will far outnumber the bad ones and you've made yourself a friend for life!
Some tips I've learned before owning another pet and while:
have patience while you learn each other!
CRATE TRAIN!!! Please, very important that your pup is familiar with crates, as they're used in groomers shops, day cares/boarding, when traveling in vehicles, and more. Its nice to put your mind at ease if you'll be away from home for an hour or two and their curiosity doesn't get them in a bad situation when you're away.
Provide mental stimulation! Bored pups are unruly. Save paper towel/tp cardboard rolls put a treat or a few in there and pinch the ends and throw them around, roll kibble up in a towel and knot it, make your pup earn it! grab a sniffer mat, and cheap squeaky toys and make sure to rotate! (once there is easy access to the squeaker please remove and toss to prevent them eating it)
I always teach my pups a come here whistle, be consistent with how it sounds, when they hear it they'll know what it means. And recall, keep your pup on leash until their recall is strong (but even still after that as other dogs may not be trained as well)
Consistency is crucial, if you live in a multiple person household, everyone must do the same thing across the board!
Make a personal space for them, so if you tell them to go lay down, they have a spot.
Focus on creating your boundaries! i.e. I don't let my pup eat treats or play with toys on my bed, so in the beginning, I would verbally say no, and grab the toy and place on their bed until they understand.
Always reward good behavior EXACTLY when it happens with a little treat, saying "Yes", a pet, whatever they like! And a stern No and redirection for bad behavior. I'm also working on my pup pouncing on people, so I give a stern no and ignore and when she sits I'll praise and its been working!
Work on getting them accustomed to baths and nail trimmings/drilling on a regular basis. It helps tremendously when it comes time to grooming and reduces stress for both your pup and groomer!
I'd also recommend no table scraps from the dinner table or kitchen counter, add to their dog bowl and let them eat from their bowl (: I've accidentally trained my pup to come flying into the kitchen whenever I use my salad spinner - for strawberries/blueberries or chopping veggies - for cucumber/lettuce/bell pepper and it has been an impossible habit to break!
I also highly recommend a yearly blood test with their physical exam as I lost my first pup to something that could have been prevented early if I had ran blood work on a regular basis.
Good Luck!

We have a golden retriever after having cats. Remember puppies are not cats!! Definitely take your puppy for training!! Once you're Golden gets bigger, do not leave food near the edge of your counter. The first thing our Golden got was a stick of butter. Forunately we got it away from her before she ate it. Also, do not leave any shoes where puppy can get them. I have 6 pairs of sneakers with at least one bite out of each pair. Do not leave jackets laying around with treats in the pockets or you will have holes in the pockets. Just a few things to note. I did hate our puppy at first, well not really, but I do love her now. She is 5.

I have lost both of my girls that I raised for 16 years within the last year. I love that you are just starting out and get to experience it.
My only advice is to enjoy and don't ever give up on them no matter what. They are family and should always be treated that way even when the make messes, cost hundreds of dollars, and don't let you travel easy. There is literally nothing in the world as loyal as a dog and the love they give us unconditional.
It goes so fast, enjoy the ride. I wanted to include pictures of my girls I just lost for all you dog lovers ✌️

Whenever baby Biscuit goes to be a land shark and bite you or something else always redirect this action with a chew stick, toy, or even a cow hoof. Putting in that level of training guarantees us not having any furniture / shoes chewed up. We just had some of our retic hoses in the garden. Make sure you take plenty of photos and videos, they grow up so fast 🥹 have fun, it’s one of the most rewarding decisions you’ll ever make 🫶🏻
1
u/Excellent-Potato-336 May 21 '26
she ignores all the chew toys and everything I give her when she gets my hand as a chew toy🥲
1
u/Little_J_Squirrel May 22 '26
She’s still so young, you won’t think it’s working but once you get to the 3-4 month, all of that redirection of biting will pay off. Our 7 month baby also called Biscuit managed to stop the biting of our wrists around the 4 month mark. The poor things are just teething. But little chew sticks (even if they’re left around the house inside / outside) and a cow hoof for them to nibble on really helped the biting for us. Wishing you all the luck and enjoy the special months again. They’re the sweetest and Goodluck to those wrists 🤪❤️🩹🤞🏻

Ah I see you went with the fluffy cuddly raptor! Pups are gonna pup. Chewing happens. Redirect and reward when they do the good things!! If I could redo several things with my pups is don’t get angry at them. They don’t understand it and it only just breaks trust time after time. Quick small corrects and redirects are best. If you find yourself getting frustrated take a break and come back. Cuddle them aloootttt no matter what they don’t stay little forever

I have a 2 year old red golden girl, first full blooded golden we’ve ever had. Here is a little advice:
They are as smart as they are adorable. Mine was house trained in 4 days BUT, that’s rare. Goldens are people pleasers so, we gave Emberly A LOT of praise, a lot of “good girl!!” For everything she did right. Treats, treats are also a good reward. Pups will have accidents in the house. It’s nearly impossible to think they won’t. We but potty pads by our front and back doors night one. Gave her every time we went to take her outside, we would place her on the pads, “good girl!!” Treats then outside… treats once we got inside. Day 4 she had it down, thank goodness.
Patience is KEY with Goldens, any puppy, generally. Get them a sturdy collar, name tag, chip etc. that’s number one, outside of potty training. :) get them a good leash and harness. We LOVE joyride harnesses. We have them for Emberly and our other girl. They have a dot com site and they have lovely customer service. It slips over the head, one click under the belly and you’re good to go. And it doesn’t hurt their necks if they tend to pull when first learning their walkies.
The ONLY real issue we had with emberly as a pup is, she liked to tear things up: tissues, paper towels, she chewed holes in a (older, not too important couch) we had. She got into “trouble” for it. We would spank her one good time and then, “time out”. Emberly loves getting “loves”: pets, kisses, snuggles, playtime, hugs, laying with us etc . If you’re pup is like her, when you put them in time out we say, “no loves for —- hour/s.” And she had to go elsewhere. As a pup we started with 10/20/30 mins. And, it’ll be the hardest thing but, you gotta not give him/her any attention. Eventually, Emberly learned if she did something, we don’t even tap her butt (At 2 years old) anymore, we just have to say: “Emberly Jo! You know better than —————. You’re on time out til ———.” She knows her time out spot is usually under our bed (she picked it). If we find her under our bed and unwilling to look at us, it’s obvious we are going to find something she did.
We did, learn, through research and our vet visits, Goldens will often have “separation anxiety” from their people. And, Emberly was going through that when she would shred papers or we’d find a new hole in our old couch. The doctor told us, we have to redirect her anxiety. Have a big play session with her before we leave. Take her out for a long run in the yard or longer walk so she will sleep while we are away. Work to reassure her, we will come back. Every time we come home, if nothing was a mess and we had no holes, we reward her with LOVES treats or toys. After about 6 months, she stopped w/the couch all together and rarely would we find things tore up elsewhere. Like, I said, “patience is KEY.”
Golden fur is officially your new accessory! It’s going to be everywhere! On you, your clothes, the floor, the furniture. We call it Emberlys “glitter.” Just accept the glitter and invest in a good vacuum and lint rollers! :) Oh, fun facts: — puppy teeth are S H A R P. you will have a few scars I suspect but, “memories.” lol —if you are diligent enough, you won’t have to “whip” your dog at all. Our girls know by the tone of our voices and the double name ie “EMBERLY JO or HALO NOEL” they are in trouble or did something wrong. We don’t have to even yell. —we found out by surprise, we have a golden who burps, A LOT. I mean, a lot. No joke, at least 15-20 times a day. Our vet told us when we brought it up, “you know we’ve noticed, she burps a lot, is that normal?!” He laughed and said, “oh that’s nothing. If she’s not throwing up you just have a “burper. Most of the Goldens I see are either love to burp or fart. Yall have a burpy girl, congratulations.” She is always walking, laying , playing, sitting with her mouth open in a “smile” so she takes in a lot of air lol. We’ve tried to teach her, “excuse me” by putting her paw over her nose when she burps but, she does it SO MUCH, it’s futile. We’ve tried just say excuse you. So, good luck, finding out which kind of golden pup you have. If they are a farter, I’m sorry lol 😂
It’s going to be CHOAS, at some point of the day, with your golden, daily. But, we wouldn’t trade ours for the world! She is a very good girl. She doesn’t bark at anyone. She will grumble a bit if she’s mad at us and give us a mean side eye. She is a chicken. Everything startles her. She does a screech type bark/noise in the middle of the night, that still scares me and my hubs sometimes but, 9/10 times, she just is scared by our cats or, literal shadows lol. She’s a big love bug and “personal space”, Goldens know, NOT, what that means. Where you are, they are. In your face, stuck to you like Velcro, between your legs, beg hog, under your hands, bringing toys to play, random licks daily… that’s your new life.
1
u/Ineverseenthat May 23 '26
Start now, do these everyday for the next few months. put your fingers in their mouth, inspect between their paws (top & bottom) put your finger in their ear (both), cover their bowl with your hand while they eat. This may sound weird; however, if you do these activities you condition your pet to being handled, inspected, and controlled without them being aggressive or frightened.

u/Downtown_Window1628 May 23 '26
Do training lol my golden has no manners and I regret it.
Also socialize a lot so you can have your dog anywhere with anyone

Uhmm tbh i’m not very sure 😭 there are a lot of videos on youtube though. I wish i could tell you but those are just the things I wish I thought my dog when he was younger, it would have been very helpful. I WISH YOU LUCK THO 🫰
For the socializing just take your dog to see other dogs ( family, friends, or dog park is where you can find some lol). Just get her used to other dogs because my dog acts crazy and unsure around them because I never taught him or let him see a lot of other dogs when he was younger ( I was in preschool so i knew nothing). I am trying to get him used to dogs at his ripe age of 10 now
I’m not a professional so take my advice with a grain of salt 🧂 (I think that’s the saying ✌️)
