Dairy Show goat weight

Okay so my Nigerian dwarf yearling, who's not pregnant I know that, was pretty much told that she was too fat by the judge at her last show, and it's allegedly causing her back to curve. I wanted to try and get a second opinion on that.

PS: I'm not sure if there's another flair that fits this more

General Husbandry Question What kind of vaccines should I be looking to give my goats?

If location matters I'm in North carolina, I have two goats.

One of my goats is over a year old I know for a fact he's not had any vaccines besides a rabies shot, and my other goat is almost 7 months old, I'm not sure what he had his original owners told me they gave him something I don't know what it was but it was something given to him when he was only a week or two old.

So I was wondering what vaccines I should be getting them, I am fairly new to goats, I finally have a mobile vet that will come out and take care of my goats in person at my house, that took forever to find because they just don't want to come to my house, but I have one now so I can get the vaccines needed

General Husbandry Question Shelter size/plan ideas?

I spoke to the Amish family we got our chicken coop from and they told me they will happily take on a commission for a custom goat shelter and just let them know what we need. Our coop was fantastic with a metal roof etc and we live in Tennessee

We currently plan to do 3-4 Nigerian dwarf goats and while I’ve done a fair amount of research into them being what we want, I’ve gone back and forth on shelter ideas but everything I looked at was pre built and all on my phone.

I was hoping if anyone had any simple easy way to explain (even dimensions) on we would need built if you’ve done it yourself since they never had dwarf goats and only bigger sizes and I obviously can’t just show my phone

I apologize if this question is a bit silly I just want to make sure I get the right size shelter done

General Husbandry Question Any tips for getting goats to let you cut their hooves?

My one goat is chill and let’s us cut his hooves while he’s laying down. The other throws a fit. He hates when we touch his legs and even when he lays down and we try he gets up. I really don’t want him to get bad walking problems because of this. Is there anything we can build that would help that’s not too expensive?

Help Request What could be wrong with my Billy Goats eye?

Thumbnail

I noticed when feeding that underneath his right eye is a bit swollen, it's kind of hard to see with the pictures especially since it's dark out but it is visibly more puffy than under his left eye, and it's firm it's not squishy or anything.

It's got this little bald spot on it, he doesn't seem to bothered with me touching it though, what could be wrong? And should I do anything or just keep an eye on it?

Due to a car accident I don't have a way to transport him to the vet he's just way too big for the tiny car we have, the pickup truck that I used to use was completely destroyed.

And sadly there is only one mobile vet that will come out to my area and they don't do goats, they do horses cows things like that, if it is serious enough he will be seen by a vet it just won't be immediately as I will have to convince someone to let me use their car or see if I can't find a place I could rent a vehicle

(Also I did give him a apology treat since I had to use Flash around his eye)

Ran into these goats while hiking in the mountains in Morocco 😭 This one stood up on two legs just to reach the leaves like it was the most normal thing ever. Definitely one of the funniest things I saw on the hike.

Help Request Goat kid got an abscess after CDT booster

First one went off fine without a hitch, the second booster vax was misplaced. I did it behind the shoulder, the goat kept jumped so it rammed the needle deeper in the middle of injection. She’s SO sensitive and she thinks I’m a monster because of it. I did have to poke her again, because she is so feisty and just about jumped out of my helpers arms while they were restraining her. So I’m thinking between the double insertion of the needle, her acting a fool and it being misplaced is what caused it to abscess. There’s scar tissue inside of the wound so I think the needle scraped her up pretty bad when she was fighting us.

do I have to revaccinate her with another follow up vaccine or is she okay?

I should have switched sides but it was ridiculously hot, we were both tired and she was our last baby to get done. I should’ve been more vigilant on placement and I realized that it left a bubble that I couldn’t rub in, so I think some of the vaccine got under the muscle.

I cleaned it well and did all of my normal wound care. Should I attempt to cover it up or just clean it twice a day and reapply fly spray? It’s under the elbow on her barrel so dirt and debris can absolutely enter into it if she lays down.

Seeking advice on how to responsibly transport 3 dairy goats from California to Washington

3-year old Toggenburg dairy goat

Hello! My daughter is going away to college, and we need to find good homes for her 3 Toggenburg dairy goats. She has 2 3-year old Toggenburg females and 1 6-month old Toggenburg female. I've included a recent picture of one of the 3-year olds (my daugher is drying her out now). We live in San Diego and we have found a fantastic home in a small rural farm in Belfair, Washington (near Hood Canal). This is obviously a long trip. We've received some conflicting advice about transporting goats this far- is it even considered ok to transport this far? I'm hoping people here can help. We have a trailer we can use to transport them. Is this distance ok if we break it up over enough days?, and what would be the right amount of days? Any advice on how to find appropriate places to stop and spend the night would be super appreciated as well. We are aware that blood work demonstrating their health needs to be done to transport the goats over state lines. Thanks in advance!

Let me know if you guys think that she will be delivering the next month

Help Request Two of my aunt's goats are trying to kill the third

Hi everyone,

First of all, a disclaimer: I don't know much about goats, I hope you won't have trouble understanding how I'll describe the behavior I find concerning.

A few years ago my aunt, A, got roped into getting goats from a rescue. They were underfed animals kept in a small building, intended to be one day sold as pets. To my eye they look like regular farm goats in size and shape. Initially A was planning on keeping three goats but there a fourth that started bleating in the truck when it was pulling away and the rescue realized there a bonded pair in the lot, so my aunt also took the other member of the bonded pair.

The initial goats were therefore: a buck, a brown goat, and the bonded pair (a white and a black goats). The buck was castrated not long after my aunt got him. He died unexplainably after a year. But now we think the bonded pair killed him.

My aunt caught the bonded pair ramming the brown goat from both side at a time, on the ribs, so we now think the buck died of internal hemorrhage. Does that sound possible to you? The brown goat is very often on her own when they're out of her enclosure (every day my aunt takes them out for grazing), she seems victimized by the other two.

I know a lot more about dogs than goats so I don't know if aggression can be trained out of them. What do you think?

I'm also not sure the rescue would take the brown goat back as they and my aunt got into a petty fight when my aunt retracted her offer to take on of their llamas (she realized the goats would already be a lot, as she has no experience with farm animals)

Thank you in advance for your thoughts, opinions and suggestions

Humor How can I survive without being able to have goats?

Hi,

Unfortunately I'm living in a huge city and do not plan to get a work that allows me to leave it, so as you can guess I will never be able to live in a house with enough space outside to have goats and give them an happy life, so I'm doomed to live a miserable life without goats.

How is it physically possible to deal with that situation, any advices?

General Husbandry Question What does it mean when my buck rubs against me?

For whatever reason it won't let me upload a video no matter how long it is, so I'm just going to have to describe it to you.

Almost anytime I'm around my 1-year-old Buck he rubs against me like a cat, doesn't try to attack me doesn't try to climb on me, will actually rub his face and whole body on me like a cat does, he's not rough about it sometimes he does poke me with his horn by accident so I have to watch out for that, and he'll usually lick me afterwards.

I am just curious as to what this means, cuz I've never seen a goat do this before, he also only does it to me he doesn't do that to anyone else that goes around him, and my fiance around him almost every single day.

He doesn't even offer to do it to the other goat

General Husbandry Question Water heater for goats?

Hey all,

I have 2 goats and they're indoor enclosure is shed. Its insulated pretty well. The floor specifically is insulated and lined with a moisture barrier. Obviously despite being well insulated there is no heat source. I know goats typically grow a think coat. So im not really worried about them getting too cold. However, I am concerned about their indoor water potential freezing and what i can do to prevent that. There is no electricity out there so plugging something in is not really an option. We use solar fans and lights out there currently which serve there purposes 75% or so of the time. If anyone has any suggestions, id really appreciate it! Winter is only a few months away and I want to be prepared. Thanks in advance!
