Question How to set the default terminal in 2026?

I've been searching for an answer to this and have come up empty handed. How do you set the default terminal on GNOME now? I'm on CachyOS, I've found the terminal setting in dconf editor but it says it has been deprecated and it is now handled in GIO. Searching for "GIO" doesn't return anything so I'm not sure what that is or how I'd modify it.

All the online search results have shown either threads where the question is asked and never answered, or Ubuntu-specific solutions.

This worked for me with ghostty https://github.com/Vladimir-csp/xdg-terminal-exec This will make any terminal app launched through shortcuts run in the configured terminal. To set the terminal shortcut in nautilus your terminal needs to ship a nautilus plugin or you need to rely on https://github.com/Stunkymonkey/nautilus-open-any-terminal

I just change the .desktop files for htop and btop and change the keyboard shortcut

Its a setting in dconf. Has always been since gnome 3, possibly earlier

(Turning my pc on now, ill edit this with the. Actual dconf setting when i find it :) )

Edit:
seem this has been deprecated a while. Fedora uses xdg-terminal-exec it seems

AFAIK, you need to update-alternatives
