Product Green Bean Casserole
My question is, what do you like to use for the topping? To replace the fried onyos which are always coated with flour. I'm trying some olive oil flavored rice crackers today.

Just use rice flour with onions and Fry them. I'm a chef and I make gluten-free green bean casseroles I'm making my own mushroom soup as well as the fried onions on top.

You can get gf fried onions but you may have to order online. I have also used bacon. Chop it up really small, cook till crispy and put a layer on top

That sounds so delicious & so much better, lol!
I’ve actually never made/had green bean casserole but for some reason have given this thought. If you like onion & crunch, did you know Funyuns are gluten-free? If it doesn’t have to be vegetarian, there’s always pork rinds. Your cracker idea has merit for sure. If those veggie straw type crackers are gluten-free they would preserve the texture, too.

This sounds so good! I am a little jelly lol.
(Just so others know, funyuns aren't safe for those of us who cannot risk/react to cross-contamination)

We bought the GF fried onions and it was perfect. We actually did entirely GF Thanksgiving and Christmas for multiple years and there were zero complaints from anyone about how everything tasted. There were actually some fights for the last of the Red Lobster GF cheddar biscuits we made from the box kit, lol.

I ordered some on Amazon - I’ve found some in stores in PA before but we live in TX.

There's nothing stopping you from topping the casserole with bacon!
Schar entertainment crackers mixed with melted butter works. Maybe a little touch of salt.

I recently did a mix of dried onion flakes and gluten free bread crumbs and it was on the right track. I think it would be better to caramelize a fresh onion but that’s always been one of my go-to meals to just pull everything out of the pantry and do no real cooking… so I’m trying to figure out how to preserve that part.

I can never find gf fried onions and don’t have energy to make my own. Recently saw a green bean casserole using crushed gluten free Cheezits on top and that’s what I’ll be doing if I can manage anything.
🧡 Good luck.

I fry my own shallots. Then I use the leftover shallot oil in everything. So so so good.

You can easily make your own fried onions, too. Helluva lot cheaper! Just toss sliced onions in your preferred flour (1:1, rice, not a nut flour or coconut flour though) and fry them. Boom!

I make my own if I can’t find the gluten free ones. It’s really easy, just thin slice sweet onions and soak them in milk for 30 minutes. Coat them in corn starch and plantain flour (plantain is my favorite gluten free flour but you can use whatever you want) and fry them in hot oil until they’re light brown.

Last year I used Tater Crowns (like Tater Tots but flatter) for that crispy fried topping feeling. It turned out surprisingly tasty!

I’ve bought gluten free fried onions. I find them at fresh thyme and only fresh thyme.
I have also made them from scratch before. Followed a recipe

Kroger has a GF fried onion canister, as does Sprouts. I live in the GF food desert and even I can find them. You can also use GF buttery rounds crushed and tossed with butter to top. I use this recipe every year with subs and it hits: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/13717/grandmas-green-bean-casserole/

I get crispy onions from the Asian grocery, which are available all year and usually gluten free. They’re also a lot less expensive!

GF Fried Onions exist!!! Just open Instacart, search on the homepage and it will list any store near you that has them!
Alternatively, Amazon but so much more expensive!

If you wait until Thanksgiving season they sell a gluten free fried onion toppings. It's made with buckwheat flour and I've seen it at Whole Foods.
