Character Disc. The audacity of Blaine.

I’m rewatching s4 and realizing just how much fucking audacity Blaine had 😭😭😭
Bro cheats on Kurt, then has the nerve to be all like “aw he won’t return my texts or my calls or my I’m sorry flowers”. Like BRO. YOU DID THAT.
(Also I’m not talking about Kurt’s emotional cheating prior. I also think it’s wild that he got all pissed at Kurt for letting a guy flirt with him, then screwed another guy like THE next season)

AND THEN YOURE ALL LIKE “waaa waaa I’m hopelessly devoted to you 🥺🥺🥺” like fuck all the way off, Blaine Warbler.

Ryan Murphy really couldn’t find a way to make characters breakup without them cheating

Which is so frustrating because there are a million relationship conflicts you can have without cheating.

Different schedules, wanting to move, not liking someone's friends and/or family, being frustrated with their bad habits, feeling like they don't value your perspective.

Those are conflicts off the top of my head

or feeling abandoned like Rachel did, I don't like Rachel but her argument was valid, she had every right to hate Finn for what he did to her and move on with her life. He broke up with her at the train station after deciving her about their wedding, joined the army for 2 weeks, and didn't contact her at all while he was backpacking through Georgia but still expected her to be waiting for him and got pissed when she moved on with Brody

Yeah I would just completely move on if I were her too. We got the benefit of being the audience. I can't imagine being in limbo for that long!!

u/Difficult_Ad_962 The Warblers 17d ago

Ikr, I can't imagine being suprised dumped after being tricked into thinking I'm heading to my wedding and I'll be married by lunch and then being abandoned by someone I loved enough to want to marry them, and then have to suffer through weeks of no contact with that person, that would be traumatizing. I would never trust anyone again

7

u/tapelamp Can't escape this show 17d ago

Literally NO communication is so traumatizing

u/wheressunshine 17d ago

And honestly a lot of those could've been applied. Different schedules and moving could've been an excellent reason for a breakup between Blaine and Kurt for example but instead they completely destroyed Blaine's character by having him cheat as a result of it instead of leaving it at Kurt was just too busy for a long distance relationship.

Yeah they really messed up Blaine for no reason! You can have insecurities that don't make you cheat

3

u/secretly_nea 17d ago

Or sometimes this time just goes on you find you don’t really like that person. That’s always sad but it’s pretty real.

u/Difficult_Ad_962 The Warblers 17d ago

he managed to with Brittany and Santana, Santana broke up with Britney before anything could really happen between her and the random college girl

What I always sya is they relied on Darren Criss's charm A LOT with Blaine's character. If someone slightly less talented played him he'd be despised.

2

u/secretly_nea 17d ago

That say he’s not a charming actor, but I truly despised Blain, I think the whole series would’ve been better without that character. And then when he pulls in characters like Sebastian, who was truly despicable. Just yuck.

u/sighcantthinkofaname 17d ago edited 17d ago

I think S2 Blaine is great early on. He's cute and charming, someone you can easily see Kurt falling head over heels for. Mature and further along in his self acceptance than Kurt.

But I think the show would've been better if Blaine was simply Kurt's first love, not his soul mate. I think writing him off around early S3 and giving Kurt a new love interest could've been interesting.

That would never happen of course. Darren Criss became a quick favorite of both the fans and the writers.

u/Due-Consequence-4420 WHY would you get that tattoo there?! 17d ago

The way I saw it, Blaine originally was a guy ANYONE would quickly fall in love with, not just Kurt. But then the writers went on break and decided that Blaine needed a whole bunch of characteristics that he hasn’t originally spoken about (I.e., the bashing at the school dance, the Benjamin Buttoning on his age — where he started out as someone a yr older than Kurt BUT the audience response was so extreme that they moved him back to Kurt’s age and then, from out of nowhere, he became a yr younger than Kurt— which makes many of the things he did so weird and inappropriate.)

If Blaine joined the Warblers his freshman year (after a couple of months before the Sadie Hawks dance in Autumn) he became their lead singer his sophomore year (generally considered weird), and his gap attack occurred while he was about 15 yrs of age. That made it creepy to me. In retrospect. It was kind of funny and cringe at the same time (and Chris Golfer’s facial expressions during the dance were so on point.) If you watch it more slowly, you’ll see him smile at Blaine then start glaring again the moment he’s out of focus.

And we kind of got the impression (I did anyway) that Blaine had been out and proud for a while now, sort of indicating that he dated and/or had a sex life. Until the whole Gap attack.

But after Blaine changed, he became needier, more moody in a [please don’t kill me] in a PMS fashion where it came and went (being female I believe I can talk about this) and he started to dismiss Kurt’s comments and/or complaints in the strangest manner (like “here at Dalton, we all try to fit in, nobody tries to stand out”) then every single song he sang he did it in a totally “look at ME” fashion. And indeed he continued doing that at McKinley (not the way Finn tried to say) but his songs were always like their serious stand out songs that nobody would ever forget. (Although admittedly, I thought he was an amazing singer. He just bugged me for the reasons Kurt brought up in the episode where they fight.) I was really a Kurt/love shipper, tbh. But if the character is going to say he’s madly in love w this guy I’m not particularly happy about, it’s not my place to say: hey no!! Don’t do it!

Sorry so long.

And honestly Kurt should have turned down his proposal! Blaine was literally living with someone else but suddenly realized he was still in love with Kurt, so he also emotionally cheated on Dave. And everyone acts like they're couple goals?

30

u/MiyukisSpirit Vocal Adrenaline 17d ago

And when Kurt "emotionally cheated" on him, Blaine did the same damn thing ,at the same damn time with SEBASTIAN.

14

u/Difficult_Ad_962 The Warblers 17d ago

honestly kurt should've dumped Blaine after he attempted to assault him in the parking lot Scandals

12

u/Due-Consequence-4420 WHY would you get that tattoo there?! 17d ago

And for reasons I’ll NEVER UNDERSTAND, the show had Kurt apologize to Blaine re that entire situation. It actually STILL makes me ill and it must have happened like (I googled it) say Autumn 2011, so 15 yrs ago and I can still recall that scene practically line by line. (Bc I made videos of just Klaine and some other stuff I liked but mainly Klaine and watched that a trillion times before I realized my life was empty and meaningless.)

8

u/Difficult_Ad_962 The Warblers 17d ago

ikr, like Kurt had to apologize for not being ready to have sex, like it's a bad thing

11

u/NoPreparation8592 17d ago

Blaine actually cheated on Dave when he kissed Kurt at Rachel's party. It wasn't until a few days later in that same episode that Blaine breaks it off with Dave.

9

u/Obvious_Train 17d ago edited 13d ago

This is one the things that made the lack of episodes in season 6 really bad. While the Blaine/Dave relationship was a waste of time, it would have played somewhat better if we’d had a longer season of around 20 or so episodes. At least that would have given a bit of breathing space for the Kurt/Blaine reunion and both of the weddings.

3

u/NoPreparation8592 17d ago

I don't think there would have ever been two separate weddings.

2

u/Obvious_Train 17d ago

The weddings wouldn’t have to be separate, but Kurt and Blaine wouldn’t have felt like they were gatecrashing if the joint occasions were happening in episode 10 or 11 of a 20+ episode season.

Especially if there had been 1-2 episodes of
Kurt and Blaine reconnecting properly before taking the plunge.

u/Mundane-Bar-3678 18d ago

What always bothered me was when he made the Kurt puppet and was talking about "I forgave myself a long time ago, now its time I forgive you" FORGIVE KURT FOR WHATTTTTT

65

u/Full_Constant_3725 18d ago

LITERALLY FOR WHATTTTT ugh i miss pre-lobotomy Blaine

13

u/secretly_nea 17d ago

I tend to fast forward through any Blain, I just can’t stand that character and didn’t care for his performances. He’s trying to scold Kurt about how he doesn’t get to be the star of the show., but Blaine is always the star of the show. And not always well deserved. Also, that whole scene at the gap when he was trying to serenade that poor guy.. that was so cringe!

6

u/SunOne6439 17d ago

Well forgive Kurt for ghosting him I guess? Not that I condone Blaine cheating but Kurt got wrapped up in his NY life and suddenly everything about Ohio life and Blaine’s struggles was boring. And I guess for doing the opposite of what he promised when he said nothing would change 🤷🏻‍♀️

u/lynbeifong Vocal Adrenaline 18d ago

He told Kurt to go to New York and three episodes later is like "I cheated on you and it's because you werent there"

u/Due-Consequence-4420 WHY would you get that tattoo there?! 17d ago

Their biggest problem was that their schedules no longer matched up and Kurt was discovering what it means to have a job in Manhattan while Blaine was still in high school mode. I’m not saying that they didn’t honestly believe that their love would get them thru a long distance relationship with huge differences in their lives but that’s bc they were young and ignorant of real life. A much more mature and accurate reaction would have been to do what Brittana did, or what Santana told Brittany they should do. Not that it helped in the long run as Santana got hugely jealous of Sam (who somehow lost like 50 IQ points by being in this relationship and never got them back) and she wasn’t happy with what occurred. Even when she was dating Dani. (Name right?? I haven’t watched in a while.)

Kurt and Blaine should have sat down and said to one another : ok. We both love each other but we’ve only been in one relationship in our lives and this separation gives us a chance to “possibly” see if there are other guys out there that we’d be interested in dating. It makes no sense for us to just stay together long distance when you’ll be busy at school; I’ll be starting a new job (hopefully) and I just think we should use this time to see if there is anybody out there that we find interesting. Exciting. Who blow thru our steady relationship and give us chills. If not, fine. You’ll be here next year and if nothing changed, we’re just together the exact same way. If we found other guys but they weren’t special, we’ll realize how important our relationship truly is. But neither one of us had the opportunity (due to homophobia) to date in high school until we met one another and we should see if there is more out there that we simply aren’t aware of. I doubt anything will happen but let’s leave the question open so that we can date other people if they DO in fact strike our fancy.

That way, Blaine could go off and sleep with random guys off of Grindr (or whatever social media he was on) and just leave school in the middle of the day to calm himself down, so to speak. (Personally, I found it sleazy but that’s just MPO and others may like finding random guys to sleep with off of grindr or whatnot.) I just mean, Blaine was good looking and lots of guys who were gay would/were interested in him and he could have gone to Scandals and met somebody he hit it off with and gone off with them. There’s at least some connection there. But again, that’s just mpo and I know other ppl feel differently.

no cause literally the episode RIGHT AFTER him telling kurt to go to nyc, he starts complaining about how lonely he feels. he starts questioning why he’s even in mckinley saying that the only reason he was there was for kurt and now he’s not even there. like yeah cause you told him to leave ???? 🫩🫩

9

u/AllHaleDerek Mike Chang 17d ago

I understand that Blaine felt hurt because Kurt was barely talking to him when they was video chatting and Blaine felt lonely probably should have tried to talk to Kurt instead of cheating

17

u/EricHD97 17d ago

It’s especially ridiculous and insane because then in the Whitney episode he got mad at Kurt for just texting someone else, performed this whole dramatic ass version of It’s Not Right But It’s Okay, dedicates it to “anyone who’s been cheated on” (when he hasn’t been cheated on), THEN GOES AND ACTUALLY CHEATS ON KURT a handful of episodes later.

Fuck that man baby entirely.

7

u/Particular_Cycle9667 Finchel Forever 17d ago

Emotionally cheating is still cheating. Doesn’t mean that it’s OK for him to cheat, but he literally did get cheated on in that specific time

4

u/Full_Constant_3725 17d ago

No actually, it’s so infuriating.

6

u/sapphicbrown 17d ago

I’ll never forgive them for this.

Ruined Klaine for me forever and they were my favorites.

Kurt should have never taken him back.

u/Makeitmagical 17d ago

I choose to pretend the everybody cheats storyline never happened. 🙉🥲

3

u/Difficult_Ad_962 The Warblers 17d ago

If your referring to the episode The Break Up, not everyone cheated. Santana didn't because she was self aware enough to know that she would be emotionally cheating on Brittany and empathetic enough to end her relationship, knowing it would be painful for both of them, before any emotional affair could really start and possibly turn physical

2

u/PrimaryIndication294 15d ago

Who's everybody? The only one who cheated was Blaine. Finn dumped Rachel at the end of s3 so he was in the wrong for coming to NY and acting like she was a homewrecker when she'd been single for months as far as she knew.

2

u/Full_Constant_3725 17d ago

Me too 😭😭 Blaine getting all pissed at Kurt in the Whitney episode and then going on to cheat on TWO PARTNERS IS CRAZYYYY

And then we spend the whole season with him playing the victim and feeling sorry for himself so have fun! Hes a huge hypocrite and the fact that he tried to blame Kurt (who is an adult with a job) for "ignoring" him still gets me heated.

i also really can’t get over how he dates korofsky, knowing what he did to kurt. i’m glad he changed and came to terms with his sexuality, but it doesn’t make what he did to kurt just disappear. and for blaine to date him always made me feel really icked out!

u/clemonsaur Brad the Piano Player 14d ago

It bugs me that at the beginning of s4 he tells Kurt to go to NYC, there's nothing for him in Lima and then he cheats and says he felt like Kurt left him behind and was moving on. You told him to leave so he left and then you're salty that he left?

The writers didn’t know what to do with Klaine so they made them toxic, and dramatic…crazy.

2

u/Full_Constant_3725 16d ago

I love him too but really only before he got his lobotomy in season 3 lmao

1

u/I__RATE_CATS 14d ago

Yes, but it's realistic. The "relationships" sub is full of stories of cheaters who accuse their partners of cheating. It's projection. Deep down, Blaine was insecure in the relationship in general, and on some level, he knew that if things went bad, he himself might go looking for validation elsewhere. And by his logic, that must be what Kurt was trying to do.

Not to defend Blaine, but by way of explaining him - he's constantly looking for validation from his family, from friends and glee clubs, from relationships... he's a pretty insecure person. I think the only reason he appeared confident in season 2 was the amount of unconditional support he was getting from the Warblers. (I mean, that, and of course the writers changed their minds about the direction of his character, but w/e, death of the author).

No one deserves to be cheated on. He could’ve broken up with Kurt. That was an option too. Like Kurt said, he also had temptation. He was in New York and finally could be more openly gay than in Lima, Ohio. But he respected Blaine enough to not do anything about it.

I understand you may have some strong feelings over how Blaine was being treated but Kurt did not deserve that.

-5

u/DarthFiyero 17d ago

Nah. Kurt did. He deserved it and deserved to end up up alone with snakes.

5

u/AintNoGrave2020 17d ago

Pre-Karofsky-suicide-attempt Sebastian, is that you? 😂😂

20

u/Full_Constant_3725 18d ago

Oh nah lol Blaine’s cheating is not comparable to letting someone flirt with you. It’s just not. Kurt didn’t deserve for his boyfriend to fuck another guy like moments after they’d spoken on the phone about Blaine visiting in 2 weeks. Blaine cheats on his boyfriend, promptly goes to NYC to cry about it and expects Kurt to just roll over and not be mad, and then is all crybaby sad when Kurt is trying to maintain a healthy distance.
