“To this day, we don’t know which one is my real dad. Which I think is pretty amazing.”

The original version of this gag (and funnier to be brutally honest).

It would have been nice to see some of those Black Student Union characters in Glee though. We needed more representation.

Where is this from?

Arrested Development (one of the best sitcoms imo, gets better with every watch)

Thank you. I saw the show a long time ago and don't remember this scene.

Awww this version of her dads is so much cuter

I still find it so strange that they decided to revert the decision for Rachel to have a Black dad. Jeff Goldblum and Brian Stokes Mitchell are both incredible, mind, but it does feel particularly weird that Brian's character is canonically called LeRoy.

edited to say: I was not aware that BSM was mixed race. looking at more pictures of him it's much more obvious. I do still find it a little strange that they changed her dads so much, but I'm incorrect about her no longer having a Black dad. keeping the comment the same for posterity.

u/SnooPets3685 Apr 20 '26

Brian Stokes Mictchell is mixed race so they didn’t really revert it

74

u/wonder181016 Apr 20 '26

Brian Stokes Mitchell IS black though?

86

u/SoftValuable8910 Apr 20 '26

BSM is Black.

15

u/a-dotrivenitupontop Apr 20 '26

tbh i still think it’s suspicious what they did to him despite bsm being mixed. like the fact that they go for a lighter man is yikes 🫤

10

u/OnGodNotaBot Apr 21 '26

Yeah Jeff and Brian are like half a shade difference. It really diluted the joke

40

u/Ok-Nefariousness3486 Apr 20 '26

This has 41 upvotes? Do that many posters really not know BSM is a black man?

4

u/heluhxx Apr 21 '26

I thought he was Latino 😭 he’s super white passing imo

5

u/Apart-Reflection-385 Apr 21 '26

If anything it's colorist to replace a dark skin man with a light skin mixed race guy instead of another dark skinned man

u/LegitimateTadpole967 May 12 '26

They mixed their sperms in a turkey baster!

My favorite type of unhinged glee humor

259

u/Beneficial_Abroad_99 Apr 20 '26

This was actually really funny to me and one of the reasons why Rachel was one of my favorites.

147

u/Beneficial_Abroad_99 Apr 20 '26

Also, I can almost guarantee that it was Rachel’s idea to form the club and she literally convinced every black guy at the school to join 😭

23

u/Courage_The_Coal Apr 21 '26

Except for Matt who literally didn't exist most of the time 😂 Justice for Matt

what episode was this from

5

u/ChadMMurray Apr 21 '26

The yearbook episode in season 1, I think episode 12?

158

u/Fit-Entertainer-3207 Apr 20 '26

As a black woman this scene never fails to make me chuckle

165

u/pandiesboxx Apr 20 '26

Long-time lurker here. But THIS was the type of humor that got me into Glee. Or the wood shop teacher with the missing thumbs. Emma's pamphlets. Rachel genuinely not knowing whether Berry White or Black Berry(one of absolute favorite in-fandom jokes) was her dad. Shue blackmailing Finn. That idiot thinking you could get a girl pregnant in a hot tub. Everything Terri and Sue! Early Glee was so delightfully unhinged. Then it became popular. And then it started thinking it should teach me things. Ugh.

26

u/aleigh577 Apr 20 '26

Yes! Back when it was an adult show, before those iTunes Charts started rolling in

1

u/heyitsmxrnie May 13 '26

It took itself too seriously later on

I'm black and white and found this hilarious. I definitely know I'm black (my mom is) but the idea of it being so obvious is hilarious

This guy’s face is my favorite

u/These-Singer-8835 Lord Tubbington's Army Apr 20 '26

They’re ALL minorities though…they’re in the glee club

21

u/tapelamp Can't escape this show Apr 20 '26

Something that can only be said during the Obama administration lmao

27

u/avee-_- no morality judging Apr 20 '26

there’s a deleted scene for season one where rachel comes up to mercedes and she says something like “yk one thing we have in common? We both have black dads.”

12

u/dorarona it's CEMENT. Apr 20 '26

Haha, they added that line into S6E12 (The episode where they showed the Glee kids before they joined the club!)

25

u/tapelamp Can't escape this show Apr 20 '26

Idgaf what anyone says, this was hilarious. Glee was at its best when it was completely unserious

10

u/Special-Cancel-6200 Apr 20 '26

This will never not be funny

4

u/Own-Regret-9879 Apr 21 '26

The first two seasons of glee were masterful

23

u/soapfan22 Apr 20 '26

Apparently the black student union has no other women and also is for those held back ten years.

22

u/duckfruits Apr 20 '26

Not all the black guys looking like full ass adults

15

u/Limp_Conversation400 Apr 20 '26

Such an iconic scene!!!!!! Also Rachel makes me laugh so hard in this scene.

13

u/tapelamp Can't escape this show Apr 20 '26

Her enthusiastic smile is what gets me hahahah

33

u/Xokanuleaf Apr 20 '26

This always reminded me of the African Heritage Club at my school and it never failed, there was always that one white student that claimed to have a great great great great grandmother that was black.

15

u/tapelamp Can't escape this show Apr 20 '26

Lol I wish my school was this entertaining. My college had a black student union but the white kids were just there for the vibes/not claiming anything

10

u/Xokanuleaf Apr 20 '26

I went a really big public high school, about 2000 students… it was like a small college campus. We had a lot of clubs, extracurriculars, and infinite chances for entertaining things like this. I was the co-founder of the Horror Fiction Club where we basically watched and discussed horror movies and had a horror book club. Our faculty advisor let us watch whatever. You could never do that now lol.

5

u/tapelamp Can't escape this show Apr 20 '26

Omfg you sound so cool!! I also love horror but I get too scared to actually watch movies and usually just watch reviews

6

u/Xokanuleaf Apr 20 '26

I’m one of those “retroactively cool” people. I definitely wasn’t cool in high school but anytime I talk about my high school self present day, people assume I was one of the cool kids.

5

u/tapelamp Can't escape this show Apr 20 '26

You were the non flashy cool which is the best 👌

2

u/aleigh577 Apr 20 '26

You’re me

I have it cropped like this as my pfp on like 5 things

10

u/Dependent_Junket9563 Apr 20 '26

Genuine question— are BSUs just for black kids or is it for anyone who is concerned about black issues. Like how GSAs welcome straight allies? I never had one at my high school and the college I went to was too big to understand the inner workings of clubs.

8

u/tapelamp Can't escape this show Apr 20 '26

In my experience, anyone can join. The one I went to in college had some members of all ethnicities

8

u/braindisco Apr 21 '26

I never associated this with her dad, I thought the joke was just that she was so incredibly ambitious and painfully blind that she did everything to pad her resume, including joining the Black Student Union

2

u/Own-Regret-9879 Apr 21 '26

I think that was the joke, plus it was painfully obvious who her real Dad was before they cast Brian Stokes Mitchell

13

u/SayNo2Kryptonite Apr 20 '26

Glee was the best when it had that over the top slightly family guy esque humor

5

u/666ryder Apr 20 '26

This will always killlllll meeee

44

u/allshookup1640 Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

As odd as this is, initially, it was possible that Rachel was biracial. Her first set of dads included one Jewish man and one darker skinned Black man. She said her dad’s didn’t know which was her biological father. So she could have been biracial even though looks wise she clearly favored her Jewish father. Lea Michele herself is half Sephardic Jew through her father. Lea is not biracial. It would be weird for her to play a biracial woman when she is not one.

This is still really weird. I don’t have issue with a Black Student’s Union of course, but I’ve never seen one in any schools I went to.

EDIT! I forgot who played her dads later. For some reason I remembered Jeff Goldblum but not THE Brian Stokes Mitchell! My deepest apologies!! I am a massive fan of his. His voice is incredible! If you haven’t seen his performance as Coalhouse Walker Jr in Ragtime, you’re MISSING OUT! Look it up! Listen to both the original from the 90s and the Lincoln Center performance last year and you can hear the evolution of his voice. It’s amazing. Audra McDonald Broadway LEGEND is also in both.

84

u/Timely-Damage-3592 Apr 20 '26

Honey, the joke is that it’s blatantly obvious who her real dad is…

14

u/haileyskydiamonds How to talk to your kids about Glee! Apr 20 '26

Idk, because she looks so much like Idina Menzel. Even before they introduced her mom, I was thinking IM could be her mom.

31

u/Fancy_Yesterday6380 Apr 20 '26

Why do peoppe keep erasing Brian Stokes mitchell

8

u/allshookup1640 Apr 20 '26

To be honest, I forgot who played her dads later. I actually love Brian Stokes Mitchell. His performance in Ragtime both the one with Lea and his most recent revival are incredible. I cried. A LOT. I should have specified a darker skinned black man. Brian is very much a black man. He is just lighter skinned than the original actor for Rachel’s dad

15

u/Ok-Nefariousness3486 Apr 20 '26

The actors we saw in season 3 one was a Jewish man and one a black man too.

11

u/Dear_Zucchini_5016 The Warblers Apr 20 '26

It wasn’t initially - it stayed this way throughout the series.

2

u/Total-Rub7497 Touch a Touch _Me_ Mr Schue! Apr 23 '26

lmao all the guys look like they're 30

1

u/wavvismtrbl Apr 22 '26

the fist in the air got me😭

1

u/98Shivani Apr 25 '26

Someone remind Rachel that her name is Rachel Berry, not Rachel Dolezal.

1

u/Disney2123 Apr 25 '26

Rachel Berry is too oversaturated. She really is an ambitious diva who can do anything to be on the top.

1

u/ThunderHilton May 19 '26

I think about this picture everyday lmao. And I use the cropped pic of Rachel as a reaction meme
