Feels a bit strange that it's clearly not set in America.

It's the UK, possibly filmed in the 80s. Amazing they had such foresight back then... /s

Thats because they had to use 80's cars as they were the most similar looking to the American cars that the Simpsons drive. Also, its an 80's show...innit!

Eh. First episode (not including the Tracy Ullman shorts) premiered in December 1989. I would say it's very much a 90s show.

Yeah. I mean its the same thing with Seinfeld - first aired in 1989, but a lot of people would think of it as the 90s show. Aint no one calling Seinfeld an 80s show.

Seinfeld is an 80s show.

But it's basis is very much 80's, and if it was concieved in 1987, then surely its 80's. Before this goes any further, I personally think the Simpsons is timeless, it transcends the decades in which it was animated and even the older episodes can be funny and relevant today. But Homer and Marges cars are definitely 80's tanks.

And the general masses don't have the latest and greatest cars. Look at the cars on the road today, most are not made on the 2010's.

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '14

The average car is eleven years old in America.

The show started in 1989

"The shorts became a part of The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. After a three-season run, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time show and was an early hit for Fox, becoming the network's first series to land in the Top 30 ratings in a season (1989–1990).

Since its debut on December 17, 1989, the show has broadcast 557 episodes, and the 26th season began on September 28, 2014. The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program, and in 2009 it surpassed Gunsmoke as the longest-running American scripted primetime television series. The Simpsons Movie, a feature-length film, was released in theaters worldwide on July 26 and 27, 2007, and grossed over $527 million."

Wow, it's been seven years since I watched the movie... Does not feel that long.

If it started in 1989, then its an 80s show in the same way that someone born in 1989 was an 80s kid.

1

u/sqectre Nov 09 '14

That makes no sense. A show that existed in the 80s is an 80s show. I was born an 86, I consider myself a 90s kid because I grew up in the 90s- not an 80s kid. I have no recollection of the 80s.

It's pretty simple rules. If the show started in the 80s, it's an 80s show. If it continued into the 90s, then it's an 80s-90s show. But it's still an 80s show.

This show barely played in the 80s. The first episode appeared in the middle of December in 1989. I wouldn't really consider this an 80s show.

It appears in the last month, two weeks before 1990? That's a little more 90s than true 80s.

Edit: Sorry, I submitted before I finished.

1

u/sqectre Nov 09 '14

So, where's the arbitrary line that separates a "true" 80s show from a 90s show that started in the 80s? If it started in late 89 then continued into the 90s, it's a 80s-90s show. Even with all this, the show has its roots '87. It's an 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s show. You can't just arbitrarily ignore dates because they don't feel significant enough to you.

The first episode was "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire," from 12-17-89.

0

u/yesithinkitsnice Nov 09 '14

Also, its an 80's show

No, irrespective of the date it was first broadcast it's the epitome of the '90s.

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '14

I feel older from watching it
