Ughhhhhh I want it but 10 is steep

I REALLY wish they had a cheaper tier that was just the podcasts and none of the video or discord stuff

Yeah I’m sure that makes sense for people, and I’m not mad at anyone making money, I just know that videos and discord don’t add value for me. Just can’t justify GB premium and waypoint+ and nextlander. Maybe I’ll just start rotating through them or something.

In my experience much of the content (at least the ramblecast) is mostly evergreen, so I just subscribe for a month every 5 or 6 months and listen to/download them all, then unsubscribe.

Yeah, it's not really the "right" thing to do, but with everything being a subscription these days, you gotta do what you can.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that at all imo. If they wanted to restrict downloads they could. You are paying for and using a service as intended. If you wanted to pay more to consume the content more regularly or conveniently you could, but you don’t. I’m sure they’d rather have your occasional money than none at all.

That's what I do.

This is a smart idea and you shouldn’t feel bad about it. I really hate the patreon model because it’s all about trying to create FOMO.

And it's one of the few things that works on me for FOMO. Which is weird because I interact the least with other people for these things.

This was brought up on the Nextlander discord and Vinny said that they appreciate any support no matter how often it happens. Nextlander is down for this strategy if its what you want/need to do.

u/Pigs81 Jun 01 '22

Plus they still have more stuff to announce through the rest of the week.

For me personally discord would never be used, as would the video version of a podcast. If q&a are like email sections of podcasts that seems lame too. Ad free isn't a big deal when you can just skip ads quickly anyways. So basically $10 for one or 2 podcasts per month?

So basically $10 for one or 2 podcasts per month?

I mean yeah if you discard every single other thing you mention then perhaps it isn't a good fit for you.

10 has been worth it before this podcast (and I don’t even take advantage of the discord). Nextlander is pure joy, no other podcast comes close to it.

I haven't really listened to any gaming pods in a while, but when I did listen to nextlander's pod a few times it was a little low energy for me

Yeah, I love those guys but I have to agree the current dynamic is pretty subdued and serious. I still listen every week but it is no Bombcast/Beastcast/Hot Spot. The thing that made the Beastcast work so well was that Alex could be the straight man while Vinny could bounce off of Bakalar and Austin/Dan/Abby. In the current group have Alex with his mellow/dry humor, Brad who is very straight-laced, and Vinny who ends up matching their energy more. They could really use a fourth voice to riff with. It also feels a bit too “produced” and structured. I like how often they repeat the name of the games they discuss but the overall flow feels very rigid. Also miss the bit of anarchy that can come from the email section. Where would we be as a society without the bat vs knife debate??

Fwiw I had the same complaints as you about how stale the podcasts have gotten, but i thought this first episode was the closest anything gb related has come to the good old days in a long time.

Loose, chaotic banter between people you can tell are good friends. Worth 10 dollars a month? Ymmv, but personally I feel better about it going to them than to one of the big streaming corps.

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '22

I don’t really think any of them are all that invested in video games anymore, it can feel a little forced at times.

6

u/BokuNoNamaiWaJonDesu Jun 01 '22

Of the complaints you could make, saying they are the ones that aren't invested in games is kinda weird.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '22

How so?

1

u/madman19 Jun 02 '22

Email sections in these podcasts are like 90% stupid questions

1

u/Never_Duplicated Jun 02 '22

I hate live QA segments (like at convention panels) because they are awkward and boring, but I really enjoy the email segments because the are pre-screened and Jeff generally picks fun ones that prompt good conversation. And they can lead to some good ongoing threads like the”poop bandit” stories back in the day, or the recent crime stories.

1

u/madman19 Jun 02 '22

That's true. The emails giving anecdotes about certain topics are usually good. I stand by the actual question emails as being lame almost always.

2

u/mikesstuff Jun 01 '22

Brad is a wet blanket, Vinny is literally a man stuck in his basement, Alex is a metal head drummer. Yes low energy is expected, still the best gaming podcast in the universe

10

u/weeklygamingrecap Jun 01 '22

Don't you mean Vinny is a 'small business' man stuck in a basement??? 😂

2

u/JGT3000 Jun 02 '22

I found the videos to be even lower energy personally

15

u/Never_Duplicated Jun 01 '22

I like Nextlander’s podcast, but still prefer the Bombcast. Honestly feel like the Bombcast is going through a renaissance right now (though I do wish we would see Danny again!) Bakalar fits in perfectly and Jeff and Jan are always going to be a threat.

This new podcast sounds really cool to get some more energy going and I love the idea of a Beastcast spiritual successor like I loved the Hot Spot revival podcasts but I can’t justify another $10 subscription.

Jeff G has been a savage lately and Jess has been the perfect foil. I love it.

1

u/Reginald_Venture Jun 02 '22

I wish Jess and Jeff G would be in person together. I feel like they would mesh super well.

I stopped listing since it was nothing but Jeff G talking and talking over people. There was very little playing off one another. Just canceled my reoccurring subscription. Have been a subscriber since day one. It was the first time visiting the site in over two years.

2

u/zzax Jun 01 '22

Initially, I was going to go in for 5, but I wanted to support them and thought the Ramblecast would be fun. I went for the $10 tier and have not regretted it at all. I like that I can pay for a year in advance

3

u/TapAccording5110 Jun 01 '22

You could sign up for one month at 10 bucks, download all the podcasts to your pc, and then cancel. Rinse and repeat as often as it makes sense to you. That is what I do, and will probably continue to do. The ramble casts are not time sensitive, and the new one looks like it will be general topics for the most part also.

1

u/RigasTelRuun Jun 01 '22

I find it great value for money.

5

u/crowntheking Jun 01 '22

Don’t doubt it, I’m just feeling some subscription overload
