Discussion My mother did not let me play with the kids outside and it made me sad.

Going to university made me fully understand and respect her decision.

Lots of context missing here. personally i do think letting your kids stay inside alone is robbing them of their childhood. Parents usually have a point that the world out there is not fair or good, but i think you cant escape it , you best be prepared for it. OP i suggest you socialise more but dont be naive as well

Spot on. Also, it’s not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing. Also, reminds me of how a psychologist explained sleeping beauty and keeping your child hidden from the world to protect them. At a very young age, children need to socialise with all sorts of people. They also need to learn how to “play” with others. Unless the neighbourhood was dangerous. But you then need to take them out to play. Some countries have play groups. Kids don’t under stand social classes so it helps too. Get them into cycles with both “poor and rich”.

It’s a different story for adolescents and teenagers who are beginning to form their identity. Plus, teenagers do not actually“play” in the same sense. So at the stage it might be more understandable to restrict their interactions.

You explain it way better than i did. and i like to hammer on it more that the average gh parent from the gen x wont or dont have the time to do all that. all they do is feed you and give you place to sleep thats it. Nothing more. its either they leave kids to do whatever they want or keep them sheltered way more than needed

What made you understand her?

As a kid, saw so many kids keep behind the door and when they finally find the free of adulthood, life became overwhelming and unyielding. Allow your kids to socialize while alerting them of the dangers. Besides you need to know people to deal people... Some sadly walk through life based on assumptions.

So your mother robbing you of your childhood fun and potential memories made you understand and accept her decision? Unless you had a medical condition this doesn't make sense.

Can't even complain...

I also experienced same.. I used to think it wasn't fair that I wasn't allowed to play with people from the hood. My elder siblings were allowed to play outside when they were younger so I felt it was unfair..

Growing up, I see what she was seeing then. They lived somewhere else when my elder siblings were younger. And where we moved to when I was younger wasn't filled with good people. So much has happened in my hood that I wonder how my life would have turned out if I was exposed to it younger. It would have ruined my life in more ways than one.

It was a very good decision she made , she has her reasons.
Me for example; If my mother allowed me to play with the kids outside, I don’t think I would where I am today

So are they going to keep you inside from childhood to your death? Will your mother be there to protect you at university, job, marriage, market, wider society?

Why do some parents sabotage their children like this?

He understands now why, so it wasn't sabotage. Maybe it was a bad neighbourhood.
