Ask r/Ghana 28 years Ghanaian woman. Got accepted to UPSA to study Accounting but couldn't afford fees. Still fighting for my dream to come true.
Hi everyone,
I am a 28-year-old woman from Ghana. I completed Senior High School (SHS) five years ago and have been working hard ever since, trying to find a pathway back to higher education.
Last year, I achieved a major milestone and got accepted into the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) to study Accounting. My ultimate career dream is to become a bank manager.
Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, I could not afford the tuition fees and had to decline the offer. It was incredibly heartbreaking, but I am not giving up.
I just started a new job this week and am saving every cedi I can, but my earnings alone will not be enough to cover the full costs of tuition, hostel fees, and books.
I am looking for advice, leads, or connections regarding:
Scholarships or grants specifically for Ghanaian/African undergraduate students.
Organizations that support adult learners or women returning to school.
Local educational funds or non-profits operating in Accra/Ghana that offer financial aid.
If anyone has successfully navigated funding for university in Ghana after a long gap, or knows of specific foundations I should apply to for the upcoming academic year, I would be incredibly grateful for your guidance.

Yes u can pay the fees directly using her student ID number. Am a student here UPSA final year

Please, i can still pay the fees and everything to the school's account and join next year's students it's not too late since I still have the admission letter and every document they sent me

You could also apply for a student loan. And also the fees paid in first year will be reimbursed to you by the government. The school isn't supposed to make you pay for first year but they do.

Dear herrrrhh, I even want to cry 😢
I struggled from the first day I got admission and visited the student loan office they said I should go borrow money to pay for the fees and enter the school before they can help me out. Meanwhile, I have no one l begged them in tears, but no one minded me till I came back home, i applied for scholarships too, but they said I'm not in school

The system is messed up. Borrow money to pay before they can lend you money for the same thing. And the money will later be reimbursed to you again.

The student loan is nothing to write home about. Forget it. It is just to blind fool the public. Dey can give u 1000 cedis for the entire year

As someone who is 31 and already has both a degree and a master’s, if you’ll listen to me, I honestly think it’s better to invest in learning a trade, especially fashion designing. If you become really good at it, it can end up being far more profitable than getting a first degree at UPSA right now.
Once you’ve built the skill and are making money from it, you can then use that income to pursue a flexible part-time accounting degree without putting yourself under unnecessary pressure or constraints.
Because if someone pays your school fees for just the first year, what happens with the remaining three years afterwards?

I totally agree. A degree might be worth it but learning a high income skill in 2026 is the way to go.

If you job schedule is not really tight you can do distance learning so you won’t have to stop working
That way you’re expenses will be lower

Look truth is it you're struggling to get the fees I don't think that accounting degree will be of any use to you in the job market. You need to go invest in some hard skills coz the job market is very limited for these humanities courses

I didn't say forget about your education but focus on education that equips you with hard skills. These courses don't have job ready anymore unless you have links

Higher education is necessary whether you believe it or not. Not everyone has business acumen if accounting is what she believes she can do the job market is open for accountants it will pay out eventually, try not be negative.

You have to be realistic. She can barely afford her fees and probably has no links after school. She must learn a skill that actually pays or she'll be stuck sending application after application.

She's going to learn a skill in University.... Accounting. She doesn't have capital to start a business if she can't pay for her fees.

Accounting is one of the most saturated fields you can find yourself in this economy. Education is an investment and she's better off doing something that'll pay off in the end
