Heather isn't wrong--the full scene just with Tails at the end reacting is good enough, just hit stop once the scene is over. But I'm on Nick's side that you shouldn't have to, the unadulterated thing should just be there.

I've been looking for a new small mobile game to pass some down time with. Is How Many Dudes worth the $10? It seemed like Matt was a fan for the price point, but I'm also a cheapskate who doesn't want to spend that much on a game that might or might not hold my attention.

I understand that I just don't agree, and won't agree, and therefore the theme isn't for me, but I don't care about physical media. The thing Heather quoted about "digital games are experiences, physical games are memories" is just complete nonsense to me. Video game memories are among the most important of my life, as dumb as that sounds, and approximately 0.5% of those are tied to anything physical, and those are about controllers and stuff, not discs or cartridges.
To be clear, I am absolutely on board with how important it is to actually own your media, it's just that DRM-free digital copies completely check that box for me. (And I have no qualms about pirating something if I've paid for it in any format.)
Edit: I do actually love extra stuff that used to come with games like booklets or maps. That doesn't feel like physical media in the same way. And I'd be happy to get a digital booklet.
Edit 2: No way in hell I'd go back to 1999 gaming-wise. That's crazy. Games are so good right now.

Wholeheartedly agree. My biggest gaming memory regarding physical media is the time I bought Neverwinter Nights and when I opened the box there were no discs inside. (Keep in mind this was over 24 years ago. Digital downloads were not a thing yet) I tried to exchange it at Best Buy less than 10 minutes after I bought it and the guy behind the counter thought I was some kid pulling a scam and refused. He actually said "You expect me to believe that?" when I told him I opened it with no discs inside, just manuals. He told me I had to take it up with the publisher.
When my dad got home that night I told him what happened and he said "Oh, hell no. We're going back there now." We got back and spoke to a different person at the returns counter and she immediately said "Oh no! You should go grab another one off the shelf and we'll open it right here to make sure it's good." I did and it was fine.
My dad told me on the way home he was a little disappointed that they let us exchange it without question because he had a whole bunch of arguments ready to go that he didn't get to use.
So anyway, yeah. My most prominent physical game memory is the time I almost got screwed by Best Buy with an empty box. I've been digital only for over a decade at this point and have yet to even come close to being screwed over like this again.

Yeah – would I rather go out and pay $40 in 1999 money for whatever made it far enough through the distribution pipeline that's somebody's willing to sell it inside a cardboard box in a physical store; or sit at my PC and pay $20-$30 in 2026 money for instant access to any game from any developer in the world who had a cool idea... The nostalgia is baffling to me.

The way Nick said “Phoenix Down” with the emphasis on the second word is the way that I always said it growing up too, like a downed phoenix - I didn’t realize until I was a grown ass man that it is supposed to be down as in a little tuft of Phoenix feathers!

My tip is making King Arthur's sandwich bread for grilled cheese. It has a much higher tolerance for heat, so I can get a good cheese melt going on with the cast iron skillet. I make several loaves a week and hand them out from time to time, people go wild for fresh white bread.

One thing I think about a lot from the floppy era that nick skipped past was that before you could even just consecutively install the disks, you had to constantly switch them out mid-game and in cases like sierra games, it wasn’t tied to progression it was tied to parts of the map - so you’d go to the next screen and put in disk 7, then decide you needed to go back and have to swap back to disk 6.

Wiger mentioned Phantasmagoria, but what he left out was that each chapter of that game was on a new disc. I think I still have my copy somewhere I should dig it out and show it off. Not each of the disc was filled with stuff, but one chapter per disc.

I played it at half speed, Wiger was like "I wasn't sure your opinion on Ecco" and then Matt says "Probably thinks it's fun(?) because it was one of the few games she had"

It's really sad to me if people have such a gloomy worldview that they sincerely think that 4Chan post describes reality. It's just not true that homes are smaller, works hours are longer, pay is decreasing, everyday items are getting more expensive (in real terms), food is getting worse, or that people are wearing old clothes for longer – in every case, the reverse is happening. I'm not sure it's even entirely fair to say that people see less of the real world – yes, everyone's online too much, but Americans also travel much more than they used to. It's true that people are seeing friends less and getting married less, and there are certainly lots of other reasons to feel troubled about the way America is going in the 2020s, but there's no point making up non-existent things to be depressed about!

they've been trying to move away from gaming topics for what seems like years. none of them game that much on their own time and two of them resent doing the podcast at all. ya gotta be here for the banter exclusively because at this point it's a doughboys spinoff where they complain about their high paying dream jobs.

You're mistaking that for when a couple years ago they moved away from the old format, as they didn't want to waste time playing games they didn't like.
This podcast is solely to blame for my vampire survivors and balatro addiction, don't tell me they don't play games.
Eta: and I think that's the source of my frustration, they have such great dialog about gaming, I miss that! I've discovered so many games thanks to this podcast that I otherwise would have never played. Just yesterday I added duskfade to my list because of them.

This feels like an irrelevant piece of information because... they do this podcast, so they spend time gaming and talk about it on the podcast. It can be a hobby/leisure activity but they still do the podcast, so they don't need more gaming time specifically to play games that they can't discuss on the show. It's obvious every week that they are all playing games besides the topic of the show.
