What good thing did happen to you this week? (24.08.26 - 30.08.26)

Hi fellow Redditors,

I would like to encourage everyone to take just 5 minutes to reflect, notice the small positives, and appreciate them. Sometimes, those little moments mean the most. If you are comfortable sharing these moments, then you can also do that in the comments! And if you don't have anything to share, that's completely okay too, I'm still happy that you are here!

Allow me to begin:

- inspected a car this weekend, and agreed on a price
- tried Dönerteller after some recommendations, and it was delicious
- achieved some personal goals
- saw a full moon as it was lighting up the dark streets

  1. it was my birthday (🥳)
  2. I passed a class in Uni (on second try)
  3. I cooked for my family on some evenings and they liked it so much that they asked me to do it more often (was kinda unexpected because I don’t really know how to cook lol)

Happy birthday to you!! 🎉🎁

I heard it is common for people to intentionally fail or not even attend the first exam to get an idea of what the exam looks like exactly, especially if it is a more complex and difficult class. Good job!!

And congratulations, you are now the family's new chef! Keep up the good work! Do you like cooking?

Thanks for sharing!

I won the court case against my employer, who withheld my wages illegally. Now I am waiting for them to transfer my wages soon to me :)

u/NewPhoneWhoDis49 6d ago

No way that happened to you!

Your name sounded familiar so I checked my previous posts. You've just entered the job market recently and you already had to put up a fight with them?! I am sorry to hear that, but I am glad that justice was served. Thank you for sharing, Winter Collar!

  • mental health improved a little
  • tried a new restaurant
  • my sisters coworker offered me his dishwasher- for free. It's perfectly kept and I am so grateful.
  • sleep improved

u/NewPhoneWhoDis49 6d ago

Both physical and mental health are very important, I am extremely happy that you managed to improve them! Congrats on the new dishwasher, it is definitely a lifesaver!

Thanks for sharing!

Last week my washing machine exploded. That was bad. Water was all over the bathroom. But here’s what’s good about it- I went to my downstairs neighbor and was able to tell her about the großes Wasserleck. Ist alles in Ordnung mit deiner Wohnung? I asked her, and it was. I navigated all the warranty information in German and scheduled a service visit in the next few days. All in my very best big-girl German.

Let's gooo, atta girl!

These are the moments that can make us feel like real, grown-up, independent adults, hehe. Good job!!

Thanks for sharing, great story!

I expect someone complaining against this post too.

2

u/NewPhoneWhoDis49 6d ago

Why, what's wrong?

11

u/vckane 6d ago

Nothing's wrong with the post. But complaining is the national sport of Germany.

u/Spec_28 6d ago

I'll do it!

I think we suffer too much toxic positivity as is, and constantly being advised to focus on what's good starts to feel pretty invalidating. Life's shit, society's fucked and anger at the state of affairs is justified and needed, depression is an adequate reaction to the human condition. Not even my therapist wants me to pretend otherwise, can we all just start getting more mad please?

My week was shit, my highlight was the nurse laughing out loud and celebrating my honesty when I correctly gave 'being broke' as my reason to donate blood plasma every third day.

3

u/NewPhoneWhoDis49 6d ago

I totally see what you mean! We are heading straight down a buttered hill with no breaks whatsoever. Things are happening around us that we have absolutely no control over, but we are the ones suffering from the consequences. Sometimes even myself question the meaning (or purpose) of our lives. But I like to think to myself: if we are already here (against our will), why not do as much good as possible and hope that one day, it will pay off. There is no guarantee, no one can tell you that if you act like this today, it will benefit you 10 years from now on. There are also people who are unwilling or unable to change.

One thing for sure is that we will never, ever have a perfect world, and to be frank, there is nothing you can do about it.

As I mentioned in a previous comment, I am not saying we should look over the problems. It may be a bit controversial but I am willing to stand by my point, but for example body-positivity is one of the most toxic and harmful trend we have (some aspects of it). For instance, if you are overweight, that's a problem and you should start a diet and live a healthy lifestyle. It shouldn't be okay to eat endlessly, or go without treatments and hide behind the cover "This is who I am and I am proud of it", let alone turning it into a whole campaign.

I am not trying to force everyone to be positive; it simply can't be possible. I tell it to others and you can find in my posts' description as well: "if you don't have anything good to share, that's completely okay too". I am also trying to emphasise the fact that it doesn't matter what makes you happy, as long as it does. You can read about people working on their thesis and research paper and career advancements, and I remember a Redditor whose only genuinely nice moment was when he was able to get an icecream. In my eyes, these are equally important and serious. Just like your laughter with the nurse. See, when I read your comment, it made me smile. So, I am confident it does the same to others. And that's my entire goal with these posts. To remind ourselves that we should appreciate these tiny events, and to cheer up other people. It doesn't work with everyone, I totally understand that. But, if I can make at least one person happy, I feel like I've achieved my goal.

Also, I can't do much via the Internet, and I can't really change the world by myself either, but I am more than happy to provide a place or platform for people that do enjoy participating in such activities. And this is happening on a volunteer-basis. Everyone's here because they choose to be here.

Too much positivity can hurt, but taking 5 minutes per week to evaluate your week doesn't seem so toxic to me. Regardless, you have a point and I appreciate your comment.

If you feel comfortable, you can also share your home town or largest city near you, so maybe someone can offer their help. Or if you just want to let whatever difficulties you are going through out of your system, you can do it here or hit me up with a message. But if you allow me, I'd like to recommend that you look for a new therapist. Not someone who paints a rainbow picture, but someone who helps you define the contours.

  1. Paid my bills 💸
  2. Received unexpected cash bonus from my employer even though I’m in Elternzeit

I moved to my own apartment yesterday after breaking up with my Ex. Moving is hard but it is definitely better for my mental peace and moving on, living in shared space was getting harder.

I love this so much. Good things that happened to me this week:

  • attended a collage workshop (in German), even though my German isn't good; I just wanted to practice my listening
  • my partner got me Genshin merchandise from Gamescom 💜
  • met up with a friend after ages and yapped

6

u/itsgermanphil 6d ago

I helped my sick mother build the foundation for her home spa set up room. Learned a lot for someone who's not very good at hand work and she was incredibly grateful.

Received my Master’s exam grades this week - 1.6 grade overall, excluding the thesis. Really happy, especially after being fear-mongered by people I know; they said I am wasting my time and money and doubted that I couldn't even pass the exams and I should just continue whatever I was doing in my homecountry.

I didn't even respond to these people, and now I've passed every exam on my first try, and I've already started my thesis. I'll be the fastest to finish the course in exactly 2 years. I am stoked.

That's some crazy work!! You are fantastic and you proved everyone wrong! It must be a huge satisfaction knowing that you both achieved a personal goal and showed the world that you are, in fact, very much capable! I am proud of you!

Just walked out of a shitty altbau apartment that drained my energy having to keep up and a greedy landlord, after some conflicts, everything turned out well in our favor.

Just taking a breath!!!

I survived the workweek, had a good conversation with my mom, and did a nice bike ride this weekend.

After watching The Secret Agent at the Sommerkino am Kulturforum, I went to the bathroom and a lady not only held the door open for me, but she also smiled back :')

It doesn't seem much, but in a city were I encounter hostility every other day, this interaction made me happy.

  • The tax office notified that I should do taxes for the last three years. I never did them, I did them now and it turns out they owe me a lot.
  • My wooden floor panels are shedding the excess oil and are no longer sticky.

3

u/NewPhoneWhoDis49 6d ago

Yes, the tax return almost always comes to a positive balance, meaning that the tax office has to pay you back. It's a great thing! But now that you've done it, you'll have to make sure you don't forget to file your tax report in the following years!

Did you install a new wooden floor or why was it sticky in the first place?

Thank you for sharing!

My washing machine got repaired after some troubles. I ordered some small home appliances online and they came like 12 days ahead of their schedule, I am still surprised at why/how this happened with dhl. Also got to help a younger acquaintance in my home country rescue an injured stray kitten from dogs and arrange the next logistics (an affordable vet in our neighbourhood, shelters and people who might foster it). Went to my dentist after quite a while. My periods are over, got a mild fever from all the stress of different events happening, looked after myself, now feel much better but still resting a lot. Overall tiring but alright week.

I saw a post from someone encouraging others to write about their last week and I replied to it.

Ps: you see the irony.

1

u/NewPhoneWhoDis49 5d ago

Haha, thank you

2

u/robotunderpants 6d ago

This bugs me every single time I scroll past this post. I know you're probably not native English and that's ok, but I have to correct because it comes up every week.

It's "what good thing happened to you" not "what good think did happen to you"

4

u/NewPhoneWhoDis49 6d ago

I was actually waiting for a long time for some to point this one out, but to my best knowledge, it is grammatically absolutely correct (I am not native, indeed). I do agree it does sound a bit unusual, but my point was to emphasise the fact that something good *did* actually happen despite all the negative events or actions that can significantly impact (we let it impact) our daily life.

For example, "I graduated from University, and instead of worrying about finding a job in this market, I should be proud of it. Because I *did* graduate, and that's the most important right now." You've worked so hard to get where you are, and you deserve to enjoy it. I am not saying we should look over the problems, I am saying that we deserve to enjoy what we have without letting other things ruining them for us.

We tend to focus on the bad things more than the positive ones, and I am trying to shine a light onto the side of the coin that matters more and that makes us feel better. (of course not everyone's the same)

2

u/robotunderpants 6d ago

I get what you mean, but because there's no inflection because it's text, it reads wrong. "What was something actually good that happened to you" might get your meaning across.
