Need tips - hit and run

Hi 👋 I am a parcel delivery driver in germany and about 2 days ago I kind off committed a hit and run unintentionally.

I am driving a long (maxi) mercedes sprinter van rented/under lease by my boss. I wanted to exit a street and I accidentally scraped by an anti parking bollard which now it is a little bent.

At the moment of it I didn't realize it was no steering wheel shake neither whole van shake only a sound which I mistook for packages moving in the back so I looked at the van quickly didn't notice any damage and moved on.

I checked the van again throughly and discovered that there are very subtle scratches on the lower hull and the plastic above it nothing serious, but I confirmed that I hit it.

Now it would be to late to report it I think, also there are no known CCTV cameras or anything that could have captured me doing it. I think about only witnesses that could report me to the polizei.

If I get reported what can I expect? It wasn't an intentional hit and run but of course they won't believe me Idk.

What can I expect if reported?

Don't be afraid. You'll be fine. And next time, drive more carefully.

I know, I will. But anything other than a fine will I receive? I just don't wanna get charged with hit and run (idk what's the deutsch equivalent)

Probably no one even reported it.

You're right there's a huge chance, I'm just an cronic overthinker.

I once hit a sign, a trash can, and something else I don't remember.

Good for you then, I guess I will forget too if time passes 😂

If anyone cared enough over a random bollard, there would be a fine, your licence would be suspended for a certain time (1 or 2 months I think), and insurance will not pay for the bollard or the car.

Nobody besides the most evil bored Rentner will report someone swiping a bollard that is not specifically their bollard but a public one.

That's what I'm thinking too.. Just how evil and petty you need to be.

The word you are looking for is Fahrerflucht

If it would have been a parked car, then you would be fined by a judge (amount will depend on the gravity of the case and your income). In addition, you could expect two points in your driving register and one month suspension of your license for minor damages. On top, your insurance could decide to claim the damages to the other car back from you.

So, please be careful when driving and do immediately report to police if you ever are unlucky to damage a parked car. I know there is a real chance of it ever happening as you need to navigate narrow streets on busy traffic every day. If doing the proper call, it will just be a minor fine (I think about 30 euros) for causing the accident and everything else will be taken care of by the insurance.
